Yeah, 20s into the first lap of last weekend's cyclocross race and we were going through a ditch with 10cm thick mud in it. Ride it and risk washing out, or run it and get REALLY muddy shoes. Then for the next half a lap, leaves stuck to the tyres...

Maxxis Wormdrives were probable not the best choice, but were great for the ride there and back. 60min each way with a 40min race in the middle.

I'm running a 1x10 with 32 front and 11-36 rear with a clutch mech (Shimano Zee) and RaceFace Narrow/Wide front chain ring to stop the chain coming off. Hasn't come off yet.

Would like a 40t rear sprocket added in there. Only about $100.

I ditched the front derailleur on my Reign awhile back and have been running 32 narrow wide and 11/40 with clutch mech.

The 40t is nice to have when your tired and have to grind out that last bit of the uphill.

OK - need an idea for a flat (ish) trail ride for elderly mixed sex group firmly in the easy to slightly less easy in the lower north island. Basically Me n Vicki plus some of our friends away for a weekend. Gentle trail ride to promote appetite 4 to 8 hours return. Shower and drink.... Ages late 50's to late 60's.... I was thinking taupo...

Taupo have gone all queer and you have to be a member to ride their trails now, may as well rock on to rotovegas and enjoy the shuttle runs :)
I'd invite you over to Hb but half our old park is closed and the new trails are a bit soft after all the rain... :(

Pureora Timber Trail! Do the new cycleway from Piropiro down to the Ongarue end. There's a bit of hill at the start then once you hit the old tramway it's a gently downhill cruise all the way. If they're capable of a 40km cruisy road ride then they'll do this no worries. Pureora Village to Black Fern Lodge is another option, a bit more hilly & parts might be a bit muddy over winter though. There are shuttles available.

Also the Taupo great lake trail - Whakaipo to Kinloch etc & the new bit Waihaha-Waihora are quite nice if you want something shorter. Boat shuttles now available I think if you want to do the Waihaha bit one way or link it up. These are free to do, somewhat bizarrely they have started charging for use of the Craters of the moon MTB park to fund maintenance of the great lake cycle trail :weird:

Cheers

The town bike started life as a 1970's 10-speed, it's now a single speed commuter, and basically everything on it has been replaced, except the awful 1970s brakes.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj295/Kawa_Rosie/CopyofIMG_5678a-Copy_zpsb9502e22.jpg

It gets used almost daily, and has not had new parts bought for it since 1994... so it's time for a bit of an upgrade. Thanks to Sheldon Brown (dot com) (http://sheldonbrown.com/) I tracked down some brand new Tektro caliper brakes that (should) fit my bike. As well as some levers designed for flat bars, and some stainless cables, since I live on a volcano.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj295/Kawa_Rosie/CopyofIMG_5664-Copy_zps70fe1a0d.jpg

(sorry for the crappy photos, I only work on my bicycles when it is too dark outside to ride them)

Clint has helpfully suggested that if I'm replacing the brakes, it won't be too much extra hassle to paint the frame

So, stay tuned while the town bike gets dragged into the 21st century.

You know I was admiring a 'womens' 70's commuter bike with long mud guards tonight at the pool. The tall wheels have quite a dramatic impression.
I must get my old Schwinn roadie back &...well... just hang it up with the other roadie bikes I never ride anymore.... It holds a special place in my heart as it was the first bike I ever rode into a car with... grunting up college hill going 3kph and the car was parked

I kinda like the orange paint scheme , you should leave it- unless you go for a Josie & the pussycats theme.

I have to say, Josie and the pussycats wasn't the first theme that came to mind.
It's had the flames for 10 years now, it's time for a change
The plan is to do the whole thing dark metallic grey, then paint the lugs in a contrasting colour - maybe bright pink, but I'll see what paint I can find.

Following the celebrity trend, a no make up selfie, well surely applying a bit of the road to your body doesn't count as make up.
Carried a bit of extra speed off last jumps on downhill trail last Sunday and lost front and rear trying to turn into next track entrance, showing off to fellow riders always ends badly lol
Matching gravel rash to lesser degree on hip and leg. Healing up alright, and oh the bike is ok :)

yeah it was gold when the bike store threw some grease in there on a mates bike and it ran for about 3 minutes before starting the howl again. Clean it out, light weight oil, good to go.

It was only really a problem in shitty wet conditions, I rode them 1000km accross Italy with not a peep from them. Ended up ripping a couple of spokes out of the rim with them on the hardtail last winter. Not sure I'd trade again though.

Cyclocross is a stupid game, the first lap hurts then you spend 45 minutes tasting blood and wishing it would stop.

Proper mountain biking on the other hand, I always look like I am enjoying it.

I finally have photos of the shiny new brakes on my not-shiny not-new bike :sunny:

As hoped, the brakes (Tektro R559) did bolt straight on, and the levers (Shimano Tigara R550) are indeed a good choice for flat bars and caliper brakes. I also installed new stainless cables.
So I now have really nice brakes, that are easy to adjust, and actually work (neither of these were true for the previous brakes). :woohoo:

The next step is the Josie-and-the-pussycats (or similar) themed paint job. and maybe brazing on some cable stops, so I don't have to zip tie my rear brake cable in place.

R650R

Nelson Boys College Cyclocross.
35min + 1 lap.
5 flights of steps (up).
Lots of mud.
Lots of off camber.

I body checked a fence (at low speed) but that was all.
It was a hard grind.

Then after a couple of BBQ soss n sauce, I rode home around the port and via the cycleway.

Had to stop at the Wakefield shop for an icecream to refuel. Took 1:30 to get home.

Knackered now surprisingly.

Single speeded my fun bike to see what it was all about.
39/18 gearing and a Surly Singulator to take up the slack.
50s faster over a 25min ride around Bridge and Gibbs valleys.
Wasn't consciously going any faster and the grind up the hill felt much shower but was actually about the same speed.
The first 6 (of 8km) averaged 5kph faster than normal.
Looks like that with this gearing, if the ride is from 20-25kph average speed, then it's more efficient for me than gears.
At about 30kph on the gravel stretch home, it was geared too low...

Numbers are fun...
Until they hurt your knees...

I got up to the skidder site joining Fowler rd. where "hang loose" jump is. Saw there was a DH looking track above it. is that a good track or just jumps & shit? Any other good tracks?

Yup sounds like you need to be shown the best bits

If you want to climb escalator continues straight up to the hang 10 skid site (400m odd). Hang 10 is just jumps n shit. If you want a serious loop you can carry on up to the fire tower and across to the Barnicoat/Involution.

My current 30 minute loop is home to escalator, cell tower to fowler road to terminus - down loadstone gulley all the way down, back up a short climb to the cell tower then down bermed monster, and across the linking track to the escalator and home.

We're on Marlborough crescent, a lot of 70s features, we love it up here. Every Friday afternoon we do a loop if anyone else knocks off early afternoon, leaving work at 3:30 back home for a beer 4:45ish you'd be welcome to join us.

I rode turners for the first time this afternoon, delicious. I must get around to joining the MTB club so I can contribute my share of labour too.

50s faster over a 25min ride around Bridge and Gibbs valleys...

Oh bugger, 60s faster than that one tonight.

I do like the way it makes you work at different cadences. Normally I'm shifting gears to keep the cadence between 90-95rpm.

Dunno if if race with one, but it's a good training tool.

Rampage on this weekend. It's good to see these guys shit themselves - makes me feel a little better. I went down to the jump park to try a few little table tops. All good for the tabletops but as soon as there's a gap between the takeoff & landing the perceived difficulty factor increases by 10000%

I need some advice from you lot... my "new" bike (Kona Blast) has got the worlds most comfortable seat ie; padded, sprung and capable of conveying a very fat person over rocks with minimal discomfort. This however is fucking useless for actually riding the bike so I need a new seat, what's a reasonable brand / pricing / source? I don't want to spend a fortune but want something capable of being ridden for a day without being a complete cripple afterwards.

Fizik Aliante.
I've got 2, both off TradeMe.
Next would be a Fizik Gobi. Not as plush, but not a plank either.

Where in the world of NZ are you?
You could give my spare Aliante a go as there's a Selle Italia SLR gel flow on the XC bike at the moment.

You could try chain reaction cycles as they are quite good value

I was bidding on them too, just forgot about them :(
Perfect colour for my bike too...

Just be aware that they're the road versions.
The difference is the V cutout in the back, carefully placed to catch you by the baggies if you hang off behind the seat often.
Still a good seat though. Got one on the rigid MTB.

I paid $70 for one of mine :(

I'll try it out and if I emascultate myself on it I'll sell it to you for $32.00. :innocent:
I have the perfect place too, the local "mountain" (about 200m from my front door) has some descent downhills so the first ride should determine whether the seat is trying to kill me.

Bit narrow for >700mm bars at the moment and I copped a few branches in the helmet vents and ripped them off the trees...

I don't want to tell anyone how to suck eggs, but those oval rings are only any good if your pedal stroke is perfect. Most people are so uneven it doesn't work properly. Plus they really need some adjustment so they can be tuned to each riders pedal stroke.

One of the last trails at Redwoods. Big jump, rolled over, came into a little double too quick and landed on the 2nd pretty damn hard. Went off the back of the bike (still holding bars), landed on the seat (most of my weight) with my ribs. Lots of gasping having winded myself. 4-5 weeks before I could lie on my stomach in bed, another week before it was pretty much back to normal. Didn't bother going to A&E as they can't do much. Based on the recovery, bruised/cracked ribs is pretty likely (comparing to others).

Heading out again the very next day wasn't the smartest idea, every bump hurt, couldn't breathe properly :sweatdrop

Tried straightening the rails, but they seemed so soft, figured they'd bend again on the first bump. Bought another seat from a Rotorua shop the next morning. Oh, and scraped that one up the same day or next, pulling a wheelie and falling off the back... Rotorua was memorable for me

Padmei
24th October 2014, 06:37
Ha I can relate to that. Twenty years ago went over a doubles in Redwoods that had just been built showing off to my then girlfriend/ now wife. Hit the second one with front wheel, over the handlebars landed on my ribs cracking some.
The pita was I had been training for months for the Rotorua marathon (my first) & had put the entry in the post that bloody morning - couldn't do the run & got no money back.

It's almost like we need some kind of protection on our chests like two big fleshy bumps or something...

3rd house on the cyclocross bike was a mission. Had to stop half way for a rest 'cause the rocks were starting to blur.

The single speed is a rigid too. Would need to wear a kidney belt.

If I can get to 3rd house on it, it should be good for the rest of the loop.

I'm thinking of doing next weekend's XC race up Sharland's on the single speed as it's already at the Olde Emporium.

Haven't done any riding at all up Sharland's apart from an XC race last year that just went up the road and down Doc and Willow Lane 5 times...

Blade CX single speed (mavic aksium wheels)= 10.3kg
Blur XC full suspension (heavy bontrager wheels)= 12.8kg
Stumpy hard tail (dropper post, training wheels) = 12.3kg
Rigid single speed Diamondback Vectra Sport (2.3" tyres) = 10.3kg

Well I just put ape hangers on the 'cuda- so fricking hot looking it would melt your screens.

On a not so good note a mate of mine broke his neck the other night jumping a pile of dirt with his boy at his house. Not good but could have been worse - he hasn't damaged his spine.
I read a good article in Spoke mag about the dangers of trials type skinnys & ramps etc by car parks at MTB parks ie Bottle lake. The psychology is that if it is close to the car people will give it a go with a greater sense of security & confidence. if however they were in the middle of the forest people would think twice bout doing them as if they did get injured they were far from the car. Not really how they worded it but long those lines.

Ouch!

Yeah, one of the reasons I haven't done much solo riding on the 350 in the last year. Looking back at some of the Sharland's vids and seeing what I was doing was starting to get me worried. Even with a Spot tracker, it's a bit iffy.

Going Coppermining today.
Well, going to attempt it.
I'll take the necessities though, Spot, GoPro and Bacon.

Well, we did it!
The ride up to 3rd House was surprisingly easy, well, not easy per say, but surprising anyway.
Around to Windy Point was brilliant, even the pig enjoyed it.
Surprisingly (again) I made it up all the climbs. Seriously not expected.
Windy Point to Coppermine was, well, windy.
Leaned the bike up against the sign at the saddle at about 45° so it wouldn't blow over. It did.
The rocky descent from the Coppermine Saddle was a bit, well, rocky. My back was getting a hammering, wrists were getting slammed around and it felt like my biceps were going to be forcefully shaken from my arms. The occasional uphill section was bliss.
Following the river around to the dam was a bit faster and I think I heard Bacon squeal a few times, but it may have been my brakes...
Followed the old pipeline back to the motorcamp and then the track around the golf course back to the old emporium.

That was an epic ride.
I still can't believe how well the rigid single speed handled it.
Or how well my knees did for that matter.

Pics and vid to follow...

Edit: The rocky bit is actually called "Boulder Valley". Very appropriate...

May have been the pig making it a bit rough and not the rigid fork after all.
My back was killing me and I had to stop 5-6 times down Boulder Valley to shake out my wrists.
Kidney belt and compression sleeves would have been welcome.
Or a suspension fork with remote lockout.

Think I've mastered auto unclipping mid crash now.
Clipped bank on weekend on fast left hander, nek minnit tighter turn sees front wheel sniffing the bank then we're straight over the bars at about 35km/h.
Nice rolling breakfall onto hardpack rocky limestone, bike did a good weedcutter impersonation and slayed some blackberry bushes :)
Helmet never touched the ground so still no excuse to upgrade! Had to stop and catch me breath a bit afterwards though...

Speaking of racing, this Sunday is the final of the club XC series.
Looks like it's a big climb/big decent track.
Down Turners and up the new climbing track...

Down Turners...
Don't like those words.
The last race, I skipped because it was a big climb/big downhill track. This is worse, the downhill AND climb are on single track with limited passing/being passed opportunities.
It's an Enduro with timed climbing!

May skip it and go riding in Richmond!

Will have to test the track on Friday evening...

Anyone want/need a 19" 2007 Giant XTC Composite race bike?
Built it up and with a longer seatpost (420mm) it'd fit me nicely, except the top tube is about 5cm too short.
Knees in danger of hitting the bars

Climbing on it, hauling on the bars, good side to side action and the frame is sweet, bugger all flex. Wish my Stumpy was as stiff.

Roval wheels, Niner RDO carbon seatpost, 1x9 gearing, RockShox SID forks, Elixir R brakes (160 & 180mm). Weighs about 10.3kg.

Gave it a burl last night.
Went up Jacks climbing track to the skid, down Turners, up TM2YL, down IV Line and back to the start.

Didn't die, but will be taking the bike with gears and front suspension.

Met some guys at the bottom of Turners who couldn't believe the XC was going down there.
"Cross country bikes down Turners?!", were the words used.
Which was a bit weird, as they'd just seen me come down it on a rigid single speed.

I was 2min faster down it than ever before. Took 4min :D
The record on Strava is 1:45 :(

By the 4th or 5th lap, it'll either be easier or bloody awful :D

The race didn't start well. A 20min climb at 170bpm to the start area (Turners Skid) isn't ideal preparation.
The track included the Firball climbing track, half of Firball, back to the Turners Skid, Turners, TM2YL and back to Turners Skid (figure of 8 layout).

Was hard climbing that's for sure.

Improved my Turners time from 4:01 to 2:59! Only 37s to go to catch up to Warewolf!

Shoulder checked a tree going up TM2YL and it spat me off and tweaked my leg so I played it safe and cruised to the finish and called it a day after 2 of the 4 laps. I was also out of water already.

Back to the single speed now!

Checked out some more of the Great lake trail around Taupo on Saturday. Did the Western Bays bit down the Waihaha stream, then along to Waihora Bay, got a boat ride to Kawakawa Bay then rode over to Kinloch. Absolutely primo singletrack, all built to a fairly cruisy grade, lots of scenic bits, plus we had a stellar day for it. Highly recommended.

Cheers

Both the above quotes are topical for me today - taco'ed my front wheel (a Mavic Crossmax SL) mentally trying to catch up with Fran's time on Turners.

Anyone know if you can lace one of the Crossmax hubs to a normal rim, or, as I've only broken a single spoke if there's some other clever trick I can do?

Single spoke or munted rim?

I was on a hard tail with ultra light weight racing wheels and dropper post.

Oh yeah, you're only 4s behind me :D

I put up a proper segment "Turners (full)" because the other ones either didn't start or didn't finish at the ends of the track.
Same with "Take Me To Your Leader".

Oh, with the new Turners segment being longer, Warewolf is now 41s ahead of me :(

Considering the track, it's not surprising there were quite a few heavier duty full suspension bikes racing Sunday.

Ha strava life - a few of my students have spotted me on there now and are stealing my obscure Richmond hills KOMs - or is that just me being paranoid?!

Rim has been destroyed (huge bend had to be stomped straight to get to the bottom - so I could push it back to the top of TMTYL...) - my old commuter bike has donated it wheel to the cause. Off for a Kaiteriteri -> Canaan loop -> Rameka mission on Friday/Saturday so I'm relieved it was salvagable.

Uploading my strava data now so you can see exactly how far down Turners I made it before throwing my bike away!

The Stan's tape seems to hold pretty well.

Got a FSA 28 spoke 26" wheel set that are heavy and flexy.
But seem to hold up well and were really cheap.

I want a nice stiff, tubeless, 23mm rim, 29" setup on the new single speed. Haven't got the bike yet, but I think it's got heavyish 19mm wheels.

Stuck some cheap Innova write bead tyres on, just cause they've got a nice low tread profile compared to the Maxxis Igniters that were on it (possibly from new). Trued up the wheels while I was at it. Only about a mm out at worst so not much to do.
Had to space the bottom front caliper mount out a mm to clear the disc.

My main concern is the massive horsepower I'm putting through the little eggy axle's on the single speed.

I've never had any issues with them so far and I really like the level of float they've got.

Both sets of eggs and candies have straight axles and it's the mallets that are showing the effects of the previous owners landing jumps to flat.

The XTR's will be a cheap(ish) experiment in the larger axle, heavy pedal world.

During the ten minutes it took me to pry it out I couldn't work out how it got there when it was climbing nicely under gentle load.... then I saw the broken spoke, must have flicked the chain up and over.
Effected a re[air with cable ties and leccy tape so I could ride out, albeit a lot slower than I would have liked :(
At least it didn't fail coming down Rocket (extreme), could have been an entire wheel failure there....

Ride up Rapaki track, over Mt Vernon, around Bowenvale to Victoria Park and Down, about 15-16 km, good mixture of uphill, singletrack and downhill

We do Bottle lake once a week but two full laps for about 34km, McLeans Island is another one, but flatter and faster than Bottle lake

Cool thanks. Was lookng at that one on the net but hard to gauge. Did bottle lake with the kids again this morn. Some serious non-smiling bikers going around. Figured they must be Stravaed up

Dragged the old 26" Ex-7 Fuel out of the shed while Slash wheel was getting fixed. Hell what a nervous twitchy narrow bar death trap and EEEEwwwwwwwww juicy 3 organic brakes....
Back on the Slash 8 650B and woohoo awesome fast rolling again and bombing the downhills.... until I thought yeah awesome the front end is some much more stable on this bike....
Nek Minnit front end tuck on fast down hill rooty lefthander... #eatingdirt... #wirebrushshower

Really should flick the Fuel off, 2010 model, 120mm travel, Reverb dropper post (needs another service) stack of Maxxis 26" Tyres, Minion x 2, Crossmark, Swampthings x 2, Bontrager x2, others.....

Got lost in the Richmond Hills again. Tried to do a lap of the XC race circuit. I think I went wrong somewhere down Terminus. Ended up on Lodestone again. Will! I need a guide!
Need to gear down 2 teeth at the back to get up them thar hills...

Yeah, my 26'ers are probably going to get the chop too :(

Although, with my race wheels, the converted single speed 2003 DiamondBack Vectra would be pushing 9kg...
The Kona is 12kg.
The pork is noticeable.

After Loadstone connection you went downhill instead of up (an ~300m climb to the cell tower), after which you should head left and down Berm Monster. Then sidle around the hill towards the East and you'll join back up with Escalator. (That's the XC cicrcuit)

Downloaded your lap and was following it.
Only problem is the Edge 200 is the best Strava GPS out there.
Really good for times, not so hot on accuracy.
I was using an Oregon 300 gps and the differences were up to 60m in parts.

I'll give it another go when I get my lower gearing, flat bars and bar ends sorted.

Spank Spike race 28 Enduro wheelset turned up today... and holy hell they are good, better than expected.
Despite what people on the internet said about breaking tyre levers putting tyres on etc I got it done with just my hands using proper technique. The 'oohbah' raised curve inside is an issue with this but not if you know what your doing with tyre changes.
The only thing I don't like is the hub clicker sounds like a Blue fin tuna just took your bait when coasting, the guy in the shop reckons it cool, I'd rather it was quieter.
Holding each rear rim with cassettes fitted but no discs it was an easily noticeably difference in weight which was surprising as the bontragers were already pretty light and the Spikes are downhill spec.
Only short test run today but very happy.

Bugger, expect they will go there if the demand comes, looks like OOZY (XC) and Subrosa (AM) rims available in 29 though not sure about wheelsets.
The spikes are prob a little overkill as they are downhill spec but very little weight difference between them and the OOZY and I want the extra durability for my weight (95kg) and rough arse riding style lol.
BTW for got to mention mine are better than ones in pic, both hubs straight pull spokes on my set.

Well, 2/4 isn't so bad..

Stan's rim strips. Not as good as tubeless capable rims, but a lot cheaper.

Was running 24f/26r psi and now it feels quite nice at 20f/22r.
Just like on the Stumpy, tubeless gives a different sound and feel, makes the bike seem more alive.

Might have to try tubeless soon, seems the only option to cure the too short valve stem issue with tubes on the new wheels....
I bought some Stans rimtape to try on the Bonty rims.... didn't like it, very plasticky no stretch and it split while I was unreeling it... and its not sinking in to the well much....
Will be back to insulation and duct tape if those rims go on again, cant see the Spikes ever not being used :)

NordieBoy
9th January 2015, 06:06
Stan's tape doesn't stretch. Put it on, overlapping by a spoke each way at the valve hole, and bung a tube and tyre on. Leave overnight and it'll push the tape into the well. Bonty tubeless rim strips are also popular.

Bidding on a pair of unused tubeless 2015 wheels off a Kona Unit.

Tried the Monday evening hill climb this afternoon.
Only 3 bikes out there. All rigid single speeds, mine was the only alloy frame though.

P51 is a little, well, acupunctury...

So this morning I am going to punish myself with either Fringe or R&R. Not going to need the thermals today...

Did R&R today.
Had a vision problem - my prescription sunnies were too dark so rode eye naked. I don't know if it was the rocks all blurred into each other but I cleared nearly all the tight corners for the 1st time. Funny that it took me 1 hour to the top & nearly 3/4 hr to get down again - also felt more buggered after the downhill than on the climb:laugh:

Quite a few of the tracks are getting overgrown. Grass is one thing but blackberry - ouch.

What happens in 'Vegas stays in Vegas... except for the carpet bill when you let some lovely lady take your bike for a midnight lap of the hotel hallways....
Apparently Hotel staff had never heard the term it I'll buff out before.....

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0NXe246IFdvYXAyazhoX0N5S28/view?usp=sharing

Meanwhile earlier in the day some choice riding and being a 'sissy' riding the shuttles.... That Eagle vs Shark is awesome, ends a long way out nowhere in the hot sun though.
Hammered Corners and little red huck and the obligatory billy t/split ends loop etc. Started late on sun so missed shuttle up, set about riding A-trail (paddys), not as good as I remember, crappy ride in hot sun to top of Tickler then back on the shuttles.
The new rims were awesome, made me realise how much the Bontragers were flexing (like on every single landing). The bike is lot more composed on landings, hold a razor sharp line and goes exactly where you want it now.

And that's just the family friendly version..... ;p

They have fairly new giant rentals at rotovegas. I'd recommend just using one of those for your first outing there to scope out the place, save the hassle of transporting bike on plane etc.... lot of the hotels will run you out to the track to. There's motels within walking/cycling distance if you ant to go real cheap...
And about six shuttles is plenty of riding for the day, lots riding accessible without shuttle also.
A days riding works out about 35-45km on 6 shuttle runs and you fairly knackered by the end of it. Rode hard on Saturday but after partying up that night didn't do many runs on sunday.
The new toilet and shower blocks are finished so pretty primo setup out there now, lil café and limited bike gear available too.

Yeah was up there a couple of months ago but only had time for a run around the redwoods with the family. I used to ride up there many many years ago when it was being set up. I can't bring myself to hire a bike - a ride on a new bike might put impure thoughts in my head & I have to stay faithful to the old school stumpy.

Apparently it's a bus service to take the aged & infirm up to the top of the (modest by Nelson standards) hill where some of the MTB tracks start. Scarily, some people can get so decrepit that just fitting gears to the bike isn't enough ;)

Actually if you're only in town for a short time it's probably worth paying for a few shuttle runs given the number of mos groovy tracks that start at the drop off.

Cheers

Just for the record I have cycled all the way to the top via Direct rd during an event ;p er well I walked most of it, couldn't spin granny gear back then lol...
When you've got a hi tech modern bike there's nothing like a high tech modern hino bus to get you to top of hill.
There's a special on at the moment for you super fit who like to pedal up hills (well I don't mind unless there is a shuttle available). Just go to the ticket counter and whisper that you were raised by wolves, then howl like a werewolf :)
