almost as epic as when i was in auckland and going to sell "i survived the tsunami" shirts. (with associated fundraising - fold up table and cardboard signs that noone reads.)

Try going there and see for yourself what it's like. You'll drop the tough guy attitude pretty quickly after some kaffir pops a cap in your ass or sticks you with a blade.

Awful as this unexpected tragedy is, we tend to forget that bombing for political causes is not new. In fact it dates from the 1850s anarchy movement in Europe which spread to the United States.

1881: the assassination of Russian Tsar Alexander II, by the group Narodnaya Volya
1894: the assassination of the French president Marie-Francois Sadi Carnot
1894: Bombing of Greenwich Observatory in London
1901: the assassination of American president William McKinley in September 1901, by an anarchist, Leon Czolgo

Since the end of WWII civil life has been peaceful in most developed nations so we are of a generation which has not known violent activism. It comes as a shock.

Actually i think we have lived in a world full of violent activism for a long time.
Its just when it reaches the Western World does it become something more in our minds.
How often is there a small 15 second blurb in the news about a car bombing in the Middle East?
I think a lot of it is the "us against them" mentality. Muslims and Jews throwing missiles around taking each other out is normal right? and they are our enemy right? they must be since the look different and talk different.

Bombings and shit like that are a normal, every day occurence in Snackbaristan, so that's why they don't always make mainstream media.

Muslims vs Jews has been happening for a very long time, and it's not going to change any time soon. Allahu snackbar.

I must be a heartless / souless sort of a cove. I could imagine a scenario where I might be so desperate as to take my own life but I just can't imagine ever doing something like this.

Its easy to get to thinking dark thoughts about humanity but the fact is most people are quite decent. Even in snackbaristan.

Its even sadder to think its probably a domestic event.

sigh...

It's been real easy for people to forget the IRA bombings in the British Isles ...
the Baader Meinhoff Group and the Red Army Faction ...
More recently Andres Breivik ...
Eric Rudoply (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Rudolph ) -
the Ku Klux Klan - an extreme Christian terrorist group ...
The Army of God (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_of_God_(USA) ) which has been linked to a number of murders and killings in the name of their religion ...
Timothy McVeigh ...
ETA (Basque/Spanish) . t
he OAS in France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organisation_de_l'arm%C3%A9e_secr%C3%A8te ) .
the Red Brigaeds in Italy ...

and a lot more ...

Easy to forget that the Western countries have a recent history of political/religious violence and bombings ...

At least they tend to use a sharp knife when they cut your head off, unlike the Mexicans. How nice of them.

if the bomber is homegrown, perhaps its a marxist/leftist radical group like the "weather underground" group from the 60/70s. They used bombs and killed people in america.
