Jay Lawrence, our Bridgestone brand specialist, smashes the Hamilton Motorcycle Club Quine Road hillclimb record.

Quine Road is about 15km north of Morrinsville in the Waikato, New Zealand. The course is a short and sharp 1.1km long and very tight, with the Bridgestone shod Kawasaki ZX10R not getting out of second gear.

The new record sits at 35.5s, with an average speed of 114km/h.

It's well past the line, I was running last so everyone was already at the top, and I was carrying quite a bit more speed over the line than others. Video makes it look significantly worse than it is.

looks about five meters to me Jay, right at the start.
I saw current NZ 550 production champion of the day, Peter Fleming, flip his bike in an event like this and end up where that shit was sitting in this vid, not what we need in this day and age and i've seen others flip at the start too, not common but still out there

Oh that one! That is the 'first response' bike, and also has the vest which controls road open (for racing) or closed. It is also significantly uphill from the starting mark, you would do freaking well to flip to there and not down to the bank on the left.

You can't have seen the Ambo location at Cliffhanger then Spyda...?

I must say, overall, with the exception of a few clubs around the country, the last two events I have attended (both hillclimbs) have had a higher level of professionalism and consciousness for safety and the mortality of riders choosing to compete than many, many events I have competed in. The clubs involved are well aware of the dangers, and have easy to follow (remember racers are simple beings) guidelines, and are not prepared to have safety compromised.

In fact, the first time I rode Quine Road in 2011 I was very severely reprimanded at the end of my first run by then club president as 'you just can't go up the hill like that without seeing it'. He was wrong, of course, but nonetheless it was noted that that rider might need an eye kept on him.

was at the nationals so didn't go to cliffhanger, did they park an ambo in a similar spot? if so how long before you got it removed for being unsafe?

how the fuck would you explain in a coroners court, if those two people basking in the sun got cleaned up, that they should've been safe there, fuck safe they ain't even got the brains to stand up so they can move if something did go west (or east)

Spyda, you weren't there mate and you are looking at a wideangle lens camera which shows more to the side than what is realistic, and has the effect of showing it ahead.

The road is VERY steep uphill, and is HEAVILY cambered to the left. As you will see, no people or items are allowed on the left. The road also has a curve it it at that point, so you are even further pointing away. When I said you would be doing well, I meant it would be impossible. If you flipped, bike would go left and away. If you wheelied uncontollably, ditto. If you got a poor start with a wobble, you are past in two bike lengths. I've seen some retarded crashes and fuck ups, and plenty of videos of them also, and none would get you there - terrain combined with physics says so.

When I mentoined Cliffhanger as the same, you see the Ambo in the vid becuase the wideangle lens picks it up but you are starting virtually alongside it. It is much the same at Quine Road, and the video does not show the terrain - what you are seeing does not take into account the way the road lies.

Explaning shit in the coroners court is easy, & ive had to do it numerous times, you just tell the truth.
The coroner does not have the jurisdiction to put anyone in jail, & cant change law (or MNZ rulebooks for that matter), hes just there to get to the bottom of what the fuck happened & make reccomendations on what to do next time to stop it happening again (which any person with a bit of common sense could usually work out for themselves anyway)
From previous posts, im not sure that you, or many others on here grasp that.
That aside, from my viewing perch well up a hill in a paddock, the meeting was safely run. In fact, on my way into the stage to spectate, I was handed a spare radio to let race control know my & other spectator locations, & tell them if anyone ran off, or binned.
Regarding the start line thing, I commented to Jay weather he was happy starting off on such a steep L/H camber, it was really steep actually.
