Chinese scooter won't stay at full throttle

Hey guys I bought a scooter the other day, it's a real heap of crap but it gets me around in the cheapest possible legal way.

Yesterday I attempted to de-restrict it by opening up the carburettor, and also getting into the electrics. It turns out it had already been done. Now for some reason though it won't stay at full throttle for more than a few seconds, which seems to limit top speed to about 30km/hr. I can achieve about 45 if I pump the throttle on and off. Any idea what could be causing this and how I would go about fixing it?

(sorry if I posted this in the wrong section: as I have no idea what is actually wrong with it, I wasn't sure where to post this)

Chinese scooters do not have a top speed. To describe their movement across the ground ... would be hard pressed to (accurately) be called "speed" :pinch:

Start by undoing whatever it was YOU did ;)

What did you "open up" the carb with ... an axe .. ??? :facepalm:

And "getting into the electrics" involved/meant doing ... what .. exactly .. ??? :crazy:

Haha by open up, I mean I undid two screws on the top and opened a cover. And by getting into the electrics, I mean I took out the battery, and discovered that underneath the previous owner had done a whole lot of shocking work on whatever used to be in there, a whole lot of tape twist bs. I have a fair bit of mechanical knowledge. I attempted to do this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kcsgy95xoOY) de restriction.

EDIT: and yeah, I put everything back together. I think the previous owners dubious wiring may be the culprit.

Or ... on your well maintained machine ... there is shit in the carb or kinked/blocked fuel line.

Is that spring shown in the clip still there .. ???

And check/CLEAN the air filter and sparkplug. (replace with NEW) Both need constant/regular attention.

checked/cleaned air filter and spark plug, will have a look for blocks/kinks tomorrow when it stops raining, spring is still there. Thanks anyway!

The fact that it does run at full throttle, but won't stay there suggests that the cause is not electrical. I would suspect the air cleaner, but you say you have already checked that.

The next most likely cause is a blocked fuel filter. If that is OK then check that the main jet is clean.

Alternatively, sell the scooter to some boatie as an anchor and buy something reliable.

Try turning the fuel tap off, draining the carb, then opening the fuel tap and flush the carb for a few seconds.
Use a torch to check for crap at the bottom of the fuel tank.

Going by the link he gave (A Boation)... it would need to be for a very small boat.

Put it back together as per factory and make sure there are no air leaks around that cap (diaphragm cap)
Then as everyone has already pointed out.

Yeah they can be pricks of things to get running right but I bought one for my son a few years ago and it runs very well - never misses a beat.

Fixed! Turns out it was nothing I did, the EGR tube had fallen off the intake.
