In my opinion the cop was in the wrong and tried blaming the rider until he saw the rider wasn't kicking up a fuss. What a wanker. The rider probably did move over too far to the left, but still no reason for the car to be that close. Also the rider should have been looking in his mirrors.

Yes and yes. No idea why he was so far to the right or braked so sharply, but any normal standard of driver should not be taking him out, let alone a "professional". The cop knew he was in the wrong and bullied the rider into feeling it was all his fault. I do wonder how culpable the rider is i.e. were they trying to prove a point to a car following too close behind? Not very smart on a bike, if so.

I can't see me calling someone "sir" who had just driven up my arse, but then our cops are generally not given to shooting people, thankfully.

Well if he had been waving this would never have happened.

Seriously though, he crashes into him, then blames him, what a twat.

looked to me like he was giving way to the white car on the left signalling to come over to his lane.. cops fault really..

Americans.

Have to say that it looks pretty bad on the officers part - I'm often further back in traffic like that because of people moving lanes etc etc. How does the law work in the USA though? Here I would think it was just a not following safely thing?

And, it didn't look like he hit the brakes that hard either?

That cop was in the wrong in everything he did and said, I bet when he got back into his car he thought hell that was close. Bloody bully boy!!!!

Shit - wet roads and snow laying about I'd be riding very cautious as well....

Cop made and error of judgement and got flustered / aggro? Shameful little bender but no biggie...

Yeah ... all of the above ... here it would be failing to stop within half the visible distance ... or following too close (I'm not sure what the NZ actual wording is . something about maintaining a safe distance?).. anyway .. cop's fault ...

The full story is on another bike site,,,the cop didn't get away with it.
He caught it in the pay packet after the rider had time to think it over and had spoken to a lawyer.

I know that guy that got hit. The cop "retired" after this incident when they threaten to bring charges against him.

Have a link to which site? (I just know googling motorbike vs police is going to give me lots of unhelpful links)

Keen to read it through

What's your take on this?
Being american, the rider really shouldn't have been riding out of the drivers line of sight (drivers are in the left of the car over there usually), and being so far to the right he's also potentially out of the mirrors of the car that's trying to merge.

However, legally, you can't run into someone then blame them for where they were in the lane  Anyway, from the posts above, the cop was done for it.

The fish eye of the cam doesn't help but I'd say the white car is closer than he appears to the bike & the white car appears to brake while jerking right a bit just before the bike brakes so I'd say he broke a bit harder than usual expecting the white car to just come in-front

Yeh from the video it looks like a ka-ching visit to the nearest lawyer over in the land of the free!

Rider not totally blameless, but the cop definitely at fault for failing to stop in time.

He should have been riding a bit more defensively, that far over to the right is not a safe place to be.

Giving anyone a Liberace means you are in the wrong.
Bike was keeping right and allowing an easy overtaking if required.

At a guess he lost his job over the abuse of power e.g. bullying for threatening to write a heap of tickets without justification.

Or perhaps it was simply for being so THICK. He noticed the camera, pointed it out, and carried on being unprofessional. Twit.
