The guy started it. I went to Anza in Palmy to buy an 03 Super Glide that was within (just) my price range. Nice guys down there and all (albeit little pricey) but when I asked them to start it, they wheeled it outside and turned the key. I did wonder why they didn't start it inside and then...Holy crap!!, what possessed someone to make a set of pipes so loud? I mean, I like loud pipes and all but this was wake the dead, taking the piss, neighbours will kill me loud. The guys looking at me with a big smile on his face saying loud eh? Seriously.....I know Harley's are supposed to be loud but someone had decided to crank it up to 11 and then thought to himself..."I wonder if it goes to 12"?
So does anybody out there in KB-land know of a Harley Super Glide or Wide Glide that's for sale (post 2000 at around $14k) that doesn't sound like a jump jet taking off , breaking the sound barrier and then exploding?

Make them fix it, I'm sure they will be able to find some knuckldragger to sell those pipes on to.

Also, are they aloud to sell such non-compliant (presumably) things?

What he sed.

Brainless bozos seem to think over noisy pipes are de riguer on a Harley - muppets.:nono:

Hahaha

Don't let that put you off.

A stock Harley is as quiet as any other ride - it is the aftermarlet pipes that make em rowdy.

Depending on what pipes are on it it may be a easy fix - some people run them with out any baffles (eeekkkkk) and a set inserted with shut them up.

Just tell the shop you will buy if they fix the racket - if it just has slip-ons then have them (at their cost) put some Screaming Eagles on, factory 'sports' mufflers but they are a nice mellow sound.

If it has a full aftermarket system then if it is a USA set of brand name pipes a internet search will find a set of quiet baffles - again they should pay for that if they want to sell the bike.

Also check TradeMe for a standard set of pipes - there are often lots of HD ones on there.

Thanks. Yeah no way they were compliant. They were also blued to shit up at the top where the pipe and the engine meet. The guy in the shop said all pipes go blue. I mentioned mine weren't blue and were seven years old and had 34k on them. Not too sure if that really registered. I think I'll flag it and hang out for a Wide Glide thats a bit more stock and newer. Also, I really like the guys in Anza but the bikes just seem that little bit more expensive and in slightly worse condition.

WMCC have a Wideglide I traded before I took this time off. It's a Silver/Red one, nice Vance & Hines 2-1 Ex (not overly loud), it's $14.499.00. They'll more than likely cut you some slack. Tell them I sent you.

hey mate Ed from ANZA here, I'm sure we can find some quieter pipes if you would still consider it.Funnily enough the guy who had it has been getting warrants on this bike by someone in the Taranaki......It wasn't me you spoke to but unless your bike is running double skins they do all blue up. Most Harleys have heat shields so you don't see it but that particular bike doesn't (lots of Japanese bikes run the double skins to keen them looking nice).Give me a call if you want to have a chat.0272787225.

He is right about the blue pipes - most HD systems have a heatshield covering the the physical pipe. Have a close look it is obvious when you are looking.

Why not look privately?Cash talks and its not like theres a shortage of Harleys for sale at this time of year.

I suspect you'd quite easily be able to find someone to swap them for you and give you some cash on top. The shop should do it for free.

Just imagine if they had started it in the shop

How 'bout them Lakers.

Not too happy at the moment......

Watched the Lakers play live at Staples in December in one of the few games they won. Kobe spent all his time off court with a towell on his head...Gasol was playing well but didn't spend enough time under the hoop...Nash was still injured. The only person having fun seemed to be Howard but most times he got in the D the other team would foul him cos he couldn't free-throw for shit. He was having a great time though and keeping the rest of the team going off court. The atmosphere was wierd...very "businessy" but it was a full house, Jack Nicholson was there and they won so it was awesome. Went back to see the Clippers at home a few days later and it was brilliant. I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much but it was only $40 for the ticket so what the hell. They had a DJ droppin beats everytime they scored and Blake Griffin was on freakin spings. Had a great time and laughed my ass off. If I didn't have all this lakers stuff I might switch teams.

Hey.....how'd you know I'm a Lakers fan????

Thanks Ed. I've not looked at this post for a while so apologies for not replying. I've not seen many Harley's with pipes as blue'd. Normally anything remotely polishible on a Harley is shined to within an inch of its life. I did see an FXDX at W'ton motorcycles well over a year ago with blue pipes but that's about it. Wasn't really a biggie for me by itself at the time but it was enough to get me worried about it running too rich or too lean. I know that for me, the colour and noise of the pipes would drive me crazy and I could see a couple of other Superglides at other places in the same range that were a little less full on. Just wasn't the bike for me in the end.

What's happening now is that the more I save, the more I think "just another couple of grand and I can get a slightly newer Harley". I'll probably enjoy what I've got for a little while longer, keep saving and come in with a bit more $$ to spend and my S83 to trade. Unless some kind of crazy bargain comes up, I can see myself getting my next bike from you.

Couple of good things though...while I mentioned your Harley's have seemed a little bit pricey to me, you've offered me a good price on my trade. Another dealer had a cheaper bike but offered me next to nothing for my S83 so I said no and no matter what they get in stock, I'm not interested.

Cheers, Ed

You'd think so eh? Nope. I've had a couple of good sellers willing to reduce a couple of hundred bucks but the problem I've got is that the bikes I've been interested in privately have been as near as dammit priced to what the dealers are offering. A couple of hundred bucks isn't going to steer me away from a dealer. A dealer wants to make a profit on a bike so if a dealer is asking 13k for a bike, I want it for 11k-12k privately (or close to that). Had two brilliant examples where as soon as I showed any genuine interest one person dug his heels in and wouldn't budge on the price (almost seemed to be worried that I'd buy it) and the other actually increased the price of his bike by $100.

Hi Pete. I took a trip to WMCC yesterday and had a look at your old bike. You've certainly looked after her. I liked the wide handlebars and the riding position was sweet. They started her up for me and it sounded just like a Harley should. The seat was a bit tricky for me as it kind of locked me into the one postition and didn't let me sit as far back as I'd like but that's a simple enough fix. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation. Nice bike mate.

lol. Cheers mate...but it's not my old bike. I actually work there normally...I'm just off work at the mo as I've just had my ankle fused and I'm on crutches etc.

If you're at all keen on it...I'm sure I'll be able to sort something out for you.

I nearly bought a Harley until....... I test rode it!! And it was relatively pimped out too.... Still I was seriously blown away in the lack of performance on many fronts.... Strangely, I still want one and will get one oneday..... Someday.... When I am old and when performance becomes secondary...

Ohhh (sound of penny dropping). I think I saw you in there at the time hopping around the office. It is a nice bike but not quite for me. A lot of people I'm sure would just ride away on it and it'd be perfect for them but I'd have to drop a bit of $$'s into a paint job (black) and a new seat to make it just right. By the time I factored in that cost I'd be silly not to look at a newer model. I was offered an almost "doo-able" trade on my current ride (not as much as ANZA (who saw it in person) but a shit load more than Action Sports Direct who pretty much turned me right off buying anything from them with what they offered). I'm managing to stash away about a grand a fortnight so I think I'll hold back for another couple of months, keep an eye on the listings and hang out for something a bit newer.

Ahhhh...I saw they had the bike out when I was there! I was faxing some forms away to good old ACC! No worries...the right bike will come along for sure. And the later model stuff is coming down in price the whole time. I'll keep an eye out mate.

total bull shit

got an evo with 250k on the clock, pipes are as rusty as **** never seen any blue on them

if pipes are blue its because its running way to lean and air mixture hasn't been set properly for the pipes

walk away from this ill maintained piece of **** and find a better example

Not true sorry mate. Most if not all single walled headers will blue with the heat, mixture correct or no. You may've noticed fuel injected bikes do it too no? Some Harley pipes are double walled so as to not blue...some are just heat sheilds so you can't see the blueing...

My 304 (?) stainless ones went goldy/bronze with rich mixture...

can you recommend a good eye doctor ?

have 4 Harleys and can't see any bluing on any of the pipes, really think I had better get my eyes tested

really worried now................................

back in the real world, bluing is cause by excessive heat, usually caused by motors running far too lean - also cause by modern emission controls forcing manufacturers to run everything far too lean

That's odd. Cause in our real world dyno room that has a pretty accurate gas analyzer, we see pipes going blue all the time. Maybe the analyzer needs it's eyes tested. Perhaps we wasted 120k.

Single wall chrome headers will blue due to the heat - does not mean anything is wrong. Have a look at a new Bonnie - their headers are built this way. Anyone who has been around bikes for decades should know this!!!!!

Most Harleys and a lot of the aftermarket full systems for them have heat shields on them - made so well now days you need to have a good look. The shield has a gap between it and the actual pipe so it does not get as hot and will not blue. Also makes the pipes look a lot fatter.

Here's a link to Vance and Hines - they use the heat shields and resulting non blueing as a selling point.

http://www.vanceandhines.com/store/softail/fullsystems/17921

Stainless steel pipes go yellow with use due to the heat - again this is normal - it can be polished out but will just yellow up again after a decent ride.

Titanium will blue with heat also - usually after the first decent run. It then stays that way.

strange that, had my panhead on the dyno, everything is spot on, no blue pipes and best of all its putting out more power at the back wheel that a standard evo

Hp = heat. No Hp = very little heat. But yeah...you're missing something for sure. HP, and the very fact that heat blues exhaust systems. But obviously...I'm not in the real world eh!?
