View Full Version : Earplugs for noisy workplace?

So, just recently I have landed a great job working in a small factory. I'm in the machine shop, and it's the first time I've worked in an environment where there is quite a lot of noise most of the day.
I'm a bit worried about my hearing because it's already not amazing for a 23 year-old. When stuff like the power press goes on we need to don earmuffs.
Problem is I wear glasses so after a few minutes the earmuffs get sore because they press the arms of my glasses into my head.
I've already had a look around at soft silicone earplugs, preferably with one of those cords that goes around your neck - the washable, reusable type so I don't have to buy new ones all the time.
Do any KBers working in a similar environment have any good suggestions for brands/places to shop?

Get some custom made ear plugs, pluz for lugz or something similar

You really need to discuss the issue with the factory Health and Safety Officer before spending your own money on something that may not comply with company rules. Seems like a logical place to start.

Yeah, get your workplace to sort you something ...
A rep from any of the safety gear shops would be more than happy to give you a
few different types of earplugs to try.
Just learn to put them in properly
I would just go for the disposable ones personally - just for hygeine. Don't have to worry
about cleaning them, just chuck them in the bin when you take a break.
A box will last you ages ... Work will pay for it

Put your ipod on and turn it up so it drowns out that nasty industrial noise!

Yeup, what he said. The company has to comply with a lot of rules around the noise etc.
If they comply, I would go with custom plugs, most comfort and best performance. Higher cost, but negligible over the life of the plugs when you're wearing them a lot.

Your employer should be supplying these.
Earplugs used to only go up to Grade 2 level, but modern earplugs are happily up to Grade 4.http://www.osh.dol.govt.nz/publications/booklets/classified-hearing/classified-hearing_06.asp
It depends on the amount of noise in your workplace but having a higher grade of earplug will allow you to go home at night without a stinking headache if the noise is constant throughout the day.

Plugz 4 Lugz. I work in a Steel Mill, and use these. They are rated at Grade 5 IIRC.
