So I pull into the gas station on the KJR this morning. Gloves off, tank open.
I pick up the nozzle and as I put it into the filler hole, gas just starts pouring out, havn't touched the trigger yet. It may not have been much, probably a cup full, but I wasn't expecting this, so it poured right down the side of the tank onto the motor (which sits proud of the tank on an XJR by a good 3cm the big lump that it is).
I hear the hissing of rapidly vapourising gasoline and the acrid smell of death drifting from the scolding hot cooliing fins and positively glowing titanium headers.
"Hiya St Peter, howzit going? Nice morning for a barbecue isn't it?"

Obviously since I'm typing this from my desk, I didn't go up like a birthday candle. Just wanted to tell you to be careful when filling up.
Be prepared for the previous JAFA being in a huge rush to get to work and not allowing the residual fuel to run from the nozzle before whipping it out of the gas tank, hanging it up and running inside to order a tripple shot, skinny, soy, mocha, frappa, fuckface.

A common occurrence at most gas stations ... hardly specific to JAFFA ones ....

Something not worried (or cared) about by most car owners ... but owners of shinny bike owners do. Treat all nozzles like they are filled to the tip of the nozzle and you wont be caught out.

It's the first time it's happened to me and I've been riding for years!
Rest assured I'll be treating the bugger like a loaded gun from now on, good advice there.

Katman: No gasoline probably wont ignite on a hot engine, but that's hardly comforting in the moment when vapourized gas is going up yer nostrils.

Hardly major... Was in Franz Josef earlier this year, the bike's tank is big enough to let it auto-fill...

Until the cut off didn't work and I turned around to see fuel pouring out the top of the tank

It was fucken expensive gas too! <_<

Were you sitting on the bike at the time?

Indeed. I feel one of my hobby horses champing at the bit looking for a canter.

That shit that drips out is free gas bro, if the person before you tips the hose up after they have finished filling it wont be in there.

Great I got 200mL of free gas.
It all evaporated on my motor. That was helpful. <_<

I always shake my nozzle to get the last dribbles out before I put it away...

Nothing to do with tipping up the hose, when the cut-off valve is in the nozzle! I always laugh at those who try and shake every drop out by lifting and shaking the hose.... :shifty:

So yeah, you'll get a nozzle-full of free gas at the most... <_<

Yeah .. I always hold the nozzle with the working end pointing up, until the last moment and tip it over the filler hole in the tank ...

Years ago a friend's Norton caught fire in Westport for exactly that reason .. luckily it was a very wet day and the petrol was floating across the water on the tank - it flash burnt and then went out .. but he lost his eyebrows and most of his beard .. being the days of open faced helmets ...

Raining in Westport - surely not

I always try to keep it up until over the hole so I get the free fuel. :shifty:
