View Full Version : The battle continues! Busa v ZX14

I just watched a video of both bikes on what was said to be Yatabe Proving Ground showing onboard acceleration and top speeds.

Apart from the absolutely insane acceleration where the speedo needles wound far too fast around he dial to 300km/h, both bikes sat at redline of 11,000rpm and held it there.

I was watching on my iPhone so too small to read speed but I can recall a thread some time ago where we worked out the gearing on a Busa and it was doing 325km/h at redline.

Anyone know the gearing on both current bikes as to their top speeds at redline?

Gearing Commander (http://www.gearingcommander.com/) suggests that both bikes would be doing 324km/h at their 11000rpm redlines.

That's the site I was trying to remember, thanks. The way they held those revs all the way around suggests they could each pull a higher gear. It would be interesting to see the absolute max they could achieve. Would the higher power of the ZX14 overcome the aerodynamic advantage of the Busa?

Don't forget wheel slip/spin. Bruce Anstey supposedly did 206mph at the NW200. But the techs said (something like) 8 or 9mph was lost to slip. So he 'only' did 198mph!!!!

Impressive though, both Bruce and the two bikes you're speaking of.

No argument there!

It would be interesting to know about the slip issue. It was a banked oval track with two very long straights and it seemed as though both bikes were hindered by gearing along each straight, like they were bored and wanting to go faster. The Busa in particular was starting to over-rev into the red, where the ZX14 just solidly sat on 11,000rpm without budging.

Always going to be a massive debate about this topic. Personally I have never ridden a zx14r so can't really have an opinion on what they are like (they look fucken ugly from the front though).

Busa has a nicer sounding engine, actually sounds like its going fast where as the zx14r sounds like it has a bit more left in it. Taken mine for a 6th gear pull all the way to 280kph (speedo indicated) and the bike was still stable as hell, honestly one of the best handling bikes i've been on. Was either going to get the busa, or the zx12r. Glad I settled on the busa because its a bloody nice bike to tour on as well.

Dont know what the aftermarket scene is like for the zx14r but you can pretty much get anything you want for the busa.
Gonna turbo mine one day, just to say I did it.

I wonder why the others don't try to match these two? I have always been a Busa fan, but have to acknowledge the ZX14's capabilities. A comfy sport tourer that just happens to double as a hyper-bike, or vice versa according to one tester.

I'm not fussed on the 14's styling either, to be honest.

They are factory restricted to 300km/h. These were derestricted and also I asked about the gearing to get the true speed.

Speedo readings can certainly be way over optimistic.

The busa I rode was derestricted. Redline in top is around 345 on the speedo (hard to tell, it's past the last number by a fair way). Do all the sums you like, it's not going to do 300+ without serious mods (lowering + NOS / Forced induction)

Shirley, if it is geared to do 324km/h at 11,000rpm then it must be unless the tachometer is also over reading?

R6 was well documented to have an over reading tacho. Tach and speedo are probably exactly the same units behind the dials, just set to read different pulses. So could, perhaps, be be out by the same percentage?

I'll see if I can find out. The original Busa had 175hp to achieve that speed whereas the latest have 197hp so it makes sense seeing as another Aussie mag got 320km/h by removing mirrors and tweaking the engine to 200hp.

I have seen a hayabusa do an actual not indicated 324kph, but it did have a massive blue bottle on the side of it.

And that gearing commander site it pretty fucken useless if you are dumb enough to think that putting a 36 tooth frot sprocket and a 12 tooth rear sprocket is going to make you busa do 756kph.

An undertail kit will also boost the top speed a little bit, gets rid of the horrible mudflap, rear indicators and number plate setup which just acts like a parachute behind the bike. Aledged 20kph onto the top speed. I heard on the grape vine that you can actually lose a few km off the top speed by removing the mirrors. Also seen dyno testing on other vehicles where an aftermarket filter actually recorded a 1.5 to 4hp loss.

Rider weight would also be something to consider. im sure a 65kg Thai guy would go faster than your average 90kg kiwibloke

I like the new ZX14R - looks a lot cleaner, is lighter than the old one with a bigger motor & apparently handles really well. The current Busa looks like someone left the old one under a heat lamp - doesn't look to comfortable either. Both have enormous amounts of power - the current 14 perhaps slightly more than the Busa (stock) At $20k otr, the 14 would be my choice.

LOL! I do like the Busa's style, though of course individual tastes vary. I feel the 14's front looks too big, but having seen one in the metal, it's not as bad as pics suggest.

Both bikes have their merits and both have dedicated owners who wouldn't consider the other. I tend to judge each bike on its merits rather than by brand.

Actually, with that gearing it'd do 2322.4km/h if you could get it to redline in top gear.

Might need a bit of a hill. And maybe a tailwind.

Our old ZX14 certainly didn't have too much problems keeping up where it mattered, granted with more rider input than required on a wee litre bike. Criiiky...even my Diavel has no issues keeping up in the twisties

I have found both the Suzi and Kwaka's mint to ride but we chose the ZX14 due to its lower centre of gravity...it felt lighter to ride.
Both of them are fast as fuck in a straight line, but who really cares?

Yeah, the 14 was simply rock solid but I felt the Busa may have needed the rear settings adjusted better. It was moving a bit on the banking as the load came on, requiring the rider to back off a bit.

With this kind of bike, I guess preference is down to style and feel as they are both at the top of the tree. For me it's the Busa on style but I recognise the Kawa may be easier to ride and more comfortable going by comments of those who have ridden both.

Busa owners are pretty dedicated, though. I think the Busa has the cachet, being the original and the first and being the only one for so long it has a special place in history.

Bikes are less about logic and practicality, more about desire and emotion. Sure you can question the logic of a bike that can do 160km/h in first gear for the road but that is irrelevant to the feeling you get when you are riding the bike of your dreams and desires.

It is that intangible, that appeal to the soul, that joy and pleasure that is so hard to define and quantify. Only a biker can understand. That is also why "practical" bikes don't sell in large numbers.

Ya think? I've done an indicated 275 on a ZX9R...I'm sure I could get the needle to 300 if the bike was capable. Going in a straight line is easy....braking from 275 to 40 when someones fiddled with your brake span adjustment is a different matter. :bleh:

I believe "distinctive" is the word you're looking for.

Ed, the Busa wasn't the first and hasn't been the only one at all. It has been part of a progression starting with the ZZR1100, then the Blackbird, Gen1 Busa, ZX12-R, the ZX14, Gen2 Busa and finally the ZX14-R.

The Gen 1 Hayabusa was the first to break 300km/h and the last to hold the title of Fastest Production Motorcycle before manufacturers started limiting their bikes. The ZX14 might be a better bike in every way but it'll never have as significant a place in the history of motorcycles.

You're right. A good example of good luck rather than anything else. The ZX12-R A1 was a Busa-beater right outta the box but timing meant that Kawasaki had to restrict them from the first model with a few A1 models reportedly making it off the wharf before these restrictions could be affected.

The Hayabusa is hardly the only one of its kind though.

I always thought the gen 1 busa has been recorded "officially" (what ever that means) achieving an actual 312 km/hr (indicated 334) in stock form, before they were limited to indicated 300, putting their actual top speed in the 270-280's.

Gen 2's are a bit more powerful but still limited to 300, delimited they are likely to exceed 312 actual? depends how their aero compares to the original I guess, Certainly not with my weight onboard anyway.

Of course tires, rider weight, wind etc all play a part.

I ride a Gen 2 Busa, at the time I bought, the Gen 2 zx14 wasn't out, I prefered the looks of the Busa over the gen 1 zx14, especially the instrument panel on the busa, after all thats what you see more off when your on it!

The thing about these bikes that make them a joy for daily riding is the TORQUE, you hardly need to change gear, oodles of acceleration on tap in any gear any RPM, you can pull away comfortably in 3rd...

I found myself craving a litre bike when I took it for a track day though.

Not sure how well known this is but..

Have a mate who worked for triumph was telling me they had a still born project called 200/200/200.

The goal was a hyper bike that could achieve 200hp, 200mph, and weigh 200kg

They got a reasonable way into it, my mate was designing the assembly line and said they had a wierd concept design where the chain went through the swining arm and it was a bit of a problem for assembly as you then had to thread it through the hole, not very effecient for assembly.

Sounds about right. Only time my K2 hit the limiter in top was when you leaned it over going through some kinks on the fastest part of the cliffhanger hill climb. I thought it was clutch slip till we realised it was getting off the tallest part of the tyre and effectively gearing it lower.

Mr Kiwifurit,

Have you ever ridden a FULL HORSE power Hayabusa ?

I did in 1999 and raced my Full horse power 1997 Blackbird, the 99 Busa pulled away from the blackbird at its top speed of 290kphish.

March Net tested GPS to accurate to .2m/s or .66ft/sec.

Pretty good I thought. I was wondering just how much I could rely on mine.

Was having a read through this thread this morning.
Was thinking, every time I get on my bike I think fuck, this is fast! Honestly I hardly get to the top end nowdays, you just know the things will do these incredible speeds.
Considering as a young fella on the new Japanese 250s of 1965 we went everywhere lying on the tank trying to get to the magical 'Ton" 160kph !
I suspect my current ride would probably do close to 160ks in 1st gear if you revved the shit out of the thing ? How times change.

Edbear
7th May 2013, 10:03
My first bike was a 1951 B31 BSA 350, top speed lying on the tank was 72mph, (116km/h), confirmed by my mate following on his CB360 while he was sitting up! Highlight of ownership was dragging off an FJ Holden up Bank St. in Warkworth.

Second bike was a '72 T500 Suzuki which was a rocket by comparison! Top speed indicated was 112mph, (180km/h), and it would do the 1/4 in the same time as a Ferrari of the day, at 13sec. It was rated at 45hp.

Fastest bike I've owned was my '89 GSX600F with 80hp and indicated 215 and climbing before backing off. (Officer.) This bike gave me a scare as I wasn't used to the rate of acceleration and was playing with an Audi when we came to a bend at a speed I wasn't prepared for. The bend was cresting a hill and curving down to the right. The Audi with 4WD and big fat tyres made it easily but I had to brake hard into the corner and ran wide. Two things impressed me - the rate of braking possible deep into a corner and how far handling had progressed. On the T500 with its drum brakes and rubber frame I would probably have hit the wall.

To see video or in person, the way modern bikes go is still an amazing thing for this old guy!

Too right! Far less traffic, too! We virtually had the country to ourselves. When I was courting, I'd hop on the T500 and travel 500km to visit my then girlfriend. (Musta been worth it, we've been married 35 years now...)

It was an adventure in itself and I'd often take the long way, just for the fun of it. At times you'd meet another biker at a gas station and ride together for while. These days is seems speed is the essence as you see big bikes travelling past. One of the reasons I ended up with the C50T was that it could relaxingly cruise at around the speed limit, like the old T500, but could do the same top speed if you needed, (!), to. At least it would indicate 170...

I always wonder how the riders of Hyperbikes can endure the open road speed limits here. These things are comfy to cruise at double that! :shifty:

We do, and I'm not for a minute saying "Woe is me!" There are many who are a lot worse off and proving the strength of their spirit.

Certainly it hurts not being able to indulge a love I've had for 43 years now, but I do have to consider the consequences and the feelings of my family. My wife in particular has had to put up with me being wheelchair bound a few years ago and again nearly dying in the accident. She couldn't face me being a cripple again and I wouldn't want to put her through that, (again), if I can avoid it.

So it is my choice not to ride and take that risk. If it was only me, I would never have sold my bike and would still ride regardless. Younger people who still bounce when they fall can come back a lot easier and heal faster. With my condition and Osteo, I won't bounce, I'll just shatter...

Done Matamata to Cambridge in just under 30mins. Didn't look at the speedo, pretty sure I was above the limit by 1 or 2kph though.
Favourite road would have to be from Matamata to Tauranga going over the Kaimais. Lots of good sweepers going up the hill. Whoever said these bikes are only good in a straight line is wrong and really needs to ride one round a good set of bends to see how confortable they are. Pop alright wheelies to depending on how loose your wrist is...

It's really no different from any other big bike. Even on something like a Bandit or a VTR with "only" 100hp you can do 100km/h in first gear and the rate of acceleration doesn't let up until go-to-jail (or at least court) speeds. You just have to ride with an eye on the speedo until you get to the proper roads, where no ones watching.

That's pretty much what I felt. I loved it for traffic, though, as it was higher than my C50T and narrower. But playing with an XR8 in traffic, (well, sorta sitting back, smug in the knowledge I was only a mere twist of the wrist away from leaving him for dead...), passing up the Albany hill in towards Oteha Valley turn-off, I glanced down to see 160+ and didn't realise I was going that fast! 2014 model...

Well after sitting through a 40 minute presentation from Alpinestars about there insanely over priced gear that i'm never going to buy, the bikes finally got revealed.

Exact same shape as all the other 2nd Gen bikes. They didn't even read off any stats or tell us what was new and I really couldn't be fucked asking one of them because I had already been standing around for 2 hours and just wanted to get the fuck out of there. Only thing I noticed was the Brembo front callipers, everything else looked the same. They started one with yoshi cans. Sounded the same but to quiet, needed the baffles removed. Nice looking bike though, anything is when its brand new.

Guess the Gen3 is probably still a few years away but I won't be going to another colemans launch anytime soon (cheers for the free pepsi though)

Can't think of a Kawasaki that sports anything similar. The Concourse thingie's pipes look nothing like it.

I have always thought the 'busa was god awful to look at, but I don't remember ever hearing someone say they didn't like it to ride. Might have, but it would be a small portion of those who have had a hoon on one.

The ZX14 is as hideous as sin also though, so they are at least still on a level playing field.

Think bit more to than gearing as wind can slow the bike too and tire deformation too

Even clutch slipage am no expert guess fast is fast love the look both bikes

I pick zx 1400 cause sounds amazing with those extra 50 horses hehe

I have always thought the 'busa was god awful to look at, but I don't remember ever hearing someone say they didn't like it to ride. Might have, but it would be a small portion of those who have had a hoon on one.

Everybody I know who has been on one has loved it.
I did, but it gave me the screaming shits at how easy it was to go jail-fast. Far too much power for a dick like myself
