Hi Kiwibiker,
I don't post much here on KB but I have been posting occasionally keeping up with my new journey in to the world of motorcycles. Having bought a bike a month or so ago, I decided it was time to go for my BHS test.

I chose Rider Training for 2 reasons. The first was because they were the cheapest BHS provider I could find, and the 2nd was that reading their website, I got the impression it was more friendly than other more official training providers seemed (e.g passrite whom provider car and other vehicle training so would be testing on nothing more than from a guideline book with no real discernment, in my opinion)

I showed up at the Massey Unviersity Albany carpark where Rider Training holds their sessions at 12pm. It had been raining on and off all day, but the training and testing was done inbetween downpours. We did the paperwork and got the payment sorted, then after Steve finished with somebody else, we started. I had booked a Refresher course as I had been practicing for a month before hand on private premises and thought I'd only need about 15-30 minutes of practice and a 2nd opinion before I tested - I was wrong though. There was a lot wrong with my technique, mainly on the cornering aspect, and Steve helped me to realise my main mistakes being not looking far enough ahead in a corner, turning in to the corner too early for a 180 turn, and target fixation - it is great to have learnt about the proper technique for this and will make roundabouts especially a lot more relaxed for me. I was also doing some stupid habits which arose from scooter riding :scooter:

The training + test in total took about 1 1/2 hours, a half hour more than I paid for, however Steve completed the training he thought was enough to get me up to scratch (and it was), and the test, at no extra cost. He showed an obvious passion for the training and the success of students, gave great advice and lessons, and I would highly recommend them if you're going to sit your BHS test! Just don't book too little time from being over confident

On a final note, I PASSED my BHS test but have a lot to learn. I will be getting my learners license this week and will be able to go out there and practice what I've learnt from this lesson - I hope to book more training soon!

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd just add to this one, hope you don't mind.

After hearing about good things about Rider Training here on Kiwibiker and elsewhere on the on the internet, I took a refresher course this morning with Steve, it was great! The bike was easy to use, and the feedback on my riding was straight forward and to the point.

The ground was still wet from the morning showers, which whilst dampening my use of the throttle, did not dampen the fun of being back on a motorcycle after 9 years!

After whipping through a practice run of the BHS test, with some riding technique correction, it was into the real deal, no mucking around! Steve is a great instructor, knows his stuff and is very friendly.

...and silly me went to the Massey carpark first, before re-reading the text saying it was at Bar Africa carpark, Steve didn't seem to mind me being slightly late at all, good bloke!

I also sat my BHS with rider training and subsequently one or two further lessons, can't remember. What I don't understand however is why Steve hasn't got himself an I endorsement or what have you that you need to do to become an Instructor? as while clearly a good teacher (imo) and great guy, he is not actually an instructor, only his wife is?

Has Steve still got the BKing?

Excuse my wording, I was just going by what the Rider Training website says: 'BHS Instruction'.

I have no idea about his endorsements/certs/qualifications. I just know that I needed to know stuff in order to successfully complete the BHS test, and he was there to show/tell me

An I endorsement means you can train in cars. So completely pointless for bikes.

His wife has one as I believe she trains truck drivers so needs it.

They are good people and started me out well.

are you sure?

How do I get an I endorsement? You'll need to get an I endorsement for each class of driver licence you want to teach. For example, you'll need an I(1) endorsement to teach people how to drive light motor vehicles (Class 1 driver licence), but you'll need an I(6) endorsement to teach people how to ride motorcycles (Class 6 driver licence).

Not completely sure but I believe to get an I6 all you need is the 6 then the I test.

But they are great trainers that actually ride. I do have somebody I prefer over them but if I could only go with Rider Training I would be happy. I like road based training not track.

Yea don't get me wrong I'm not criticising them, I don't know that I'd be riding now if it weren't for his patience etc.
