Decoding frame numbers?

What does a bikes VIN number tell you.

This is what the owner says is stamped on frame behind headlight. The bike is other end of Aust so not seen in person. Owner was told it was a 360T Limited Edition... Night Stalker (Hawk???)
I noticed some Red on sidecover. Looks to be coverd with primer.

If anyone has an idea on model or year I'd appreciate knowing. I'm not too fussed as will be stripped down for a motomorph.

That's the frame number if it's stamped on the frame.

VIN (vehicle identification number) is usually on a separate plate riveted to the frame some where else.


Quick google search shows fuck all for the number you have though, which is odd.

It starts CB250 though, I'm picking that's what the bike is.

Yeah that's the only number owner's wife could find tonight. He's away.

A friend has a 1971/2 CB250E which has the same number count.

Just give a Honda shop a call and they should be able to tell you straight away.

From 1996-up Honda has a 17-digit VIN, e.g. JH2RD07ABTM000992 or JH2RD07A1YM417129
JH2: country of production (JH2=WMI Honda Japan, 1HF=Honda America, ZDC=Honda Italy, VTM=Montesa/Honda Spain)
RD07A: type (here Africa Twin)
B: version
1: control number (1-9 or X)
T: year (T=1996, V=1997, W=1998, X=1999, Y=2000, 1=2001 ... 6=2006)

I though it might be a K Series too. But side covers & forks got me wondering. Agreed it has been played with.

Frame and running gear look same as CB360 which we got in NZ. Doubt if any 250's came here - Oz may have got a few.
My worry would be the crank - pretty similar to the earlier motors in that bits are rare and expensive. If it hasn't been used but has just sat and rusted, I'd think the crank will have pitted bearing races...

The 360's are an ugly unloved POS....if you've been given this one, fair enough, I certainly wouldn't pay for it.

Date code of manufacture should be stamped on the rims if you look past the rust.

The engine number looks visible just behind the clutch cable in the first pic.
