Mobile phone security?

I dont use my mob for telephone banking, or e mailing, so should I be concerned about security?, in the sense that I have anti virus protection on my laptop?

I do have a password, needed to start the screen. If I had a password for the sim card as well, does that mean having to enter two passwords everytime I start the phone?

I am switching from Telecom to 2 degrees ( monthly prepay) this week. Am sick of paying each month for data I haven't used. Even if I dont use the monthly allowance on the 2d plan it will roll over to to the next month, up to a year. And next month might bring the crisis that uses all my accumalated data.

If you are using a smartphone something like lookout security app will scan your phone and apps for malware and viruses. It free from the play store so worth it.

What kind of phone?

You should get Wheres My Droid or and apple equivalent - it lets you track the GPS location of your phone in case you lose it or it is stolen. You can also remotely wipe your phone if you have sensitive data on it and you lose it.

For virus protection? I don't think its common to have an anti virus program on phones - I don't and I don't know of anyone who does - I think so long as you use common sense and aren't downloading cracked apps you should be fine.

If you use an Android phone, and its not rooted, you don't need to worry about security or malware as the apps are sandboxed in very well (its a big load of crap this malware thing unless the device is rooted...and at that point you should only root if you know what to install and what not to).

Best thing to do is look at the permissions of each app when installing, if its asking for permissions to access something it wouldn't need, its just there to data mine you contact details (no such thing as a free app)

Tried "where my droid" on the work Smasung, easily fooled by turning off the GPS... If its a samsung, just use the default samsung app thats inbuilt, lets you lock/wipe/gps track/wifi track also can set it to beep at full volume so if its lost in a paddock you can find its general location through tracking and its fine location by the audible beep. If its still you Motorola Defy, then I dont believe it works fully on 2 Degrees anyhow

I am sticking with my Motorola and Telecom for the moment. I had considered 2 degrees but their coverage outside of the towns is asbismal through the Waipa Waitomo region. I've gone to a $19 monthly prepaid plan now that my fixed contract with Telecom has expired.

I did have a brand new Samsung 2 degree's phone for free which is why I looked at that network.

The Vodaphone shop guy told me that my Motorola would work on their network but the internet download would be shit. He said that my average usage, 15 mins ph, 60 texts, 50mb data for a month doesn't justify a fixed contract.

I had looked at another fixed term contract, but that was more about getting a new toy to play with, as part of the deal. None of Telecoms or Vodophones toys did anything that I want, any better than the Motorola Defy and it hasn't put a foot wrong.

I'll ask a question here as it doesn't warrant a new thread. On my smart phone ( Motorola Defy ), there is no 'out' or 'sent' box that holds a copy of sent texts. ( untill emptied). Is there a facility on smart phones for this? or once the message has been deleted from the create window, is that it?

With the stock Messaging app, the full conversation (sent + received messages) should be there for each number/contact by default on every Android device I've come across. Or is that not what you're asking?

I tried selecting a contact name and seeing if the menu/settings showed any referrence to any texts either recieved or sent. No such thing. I have been told that if I wanted to keep a text conversation on a smart ph, I need to save it to the sim card.

The issue is no big deal, but I would've thought that a smart phone would have at least the same features regarding messages as the older phones. I tend to delete each message straight away, If I want to refer back to a text, I just might have to learn to leave the message there.

You don't need to delete txts on an Android phone. They take up such a tiny amount of space, that even a few thousand messages would probably take up 1 or 2MB at the most (your phone will likely have at least 1GB of storage).

Unless the mrs uses your phone and you don't want her seeing all your dirty txts that you send the mistress.

"Enable background data" is probably referring to packet data - eg 2G, 3G or 4G. The data manager would just be tracking the amount of downloaded + uploaded packet data.

I doubt you will ever run out of phone storage for txts unless you're a teenage girl who sends hundreds of txts per day, and even then it will likely take many months, probably years to fill that up. Some phones have a set limit for message storage, at which point the oldest messages will get overwritten. The phone may be configured to store messages to the SIM card, in which case you've got a tiny fraction of the amount of storage space compared to the phone data storage, but it's nothing to worry about.

Now that that's cleared, start storing porn on the remaining memory. Lots of porn.

According to my SD and phone storage, I have 7.42gb on the SD card and 1.14GB on the internal ph storage avalible. so I aint going to run out in a hurry.
I dont usually keep photos etc on the ph, but download to the laptop the same day. Just have about 20 songs loaded which never get played and a few music vids.

Which begs the question, how do I save something to the SD card and not the internal memory?, or does it fill one up then flow over into the SD card? I have sent some music videos to the ph and they show up in my video gallery. I'd like to store them in my music folder but dont know how.

Connect the phone to a computer and enable USB mass storage mode on the phone when prompted. If the computer is running Windows, then the internal phone memory and SD card will show up as different drives under Windows Explorer. Put your data on the SD card. In the camera app there is an option to choose the storage directory.

When you receive a picture it will go to its default location which you should be able to change somewhere in the messaging settings I think. Use a file manager like OI File Manager to move data from the internal memory to the SD card, but DON'T do this for apps as you will likely fuck something up. If you want extra lulz, then use Bash.

For apps, they will generally install into the phone memory. Once an app is installed, most of them can be moved from the Apps section under Settings to the SD card.
