This pic is what i found when i took the cover off of my RGV 250 with a view to replacing the kick start shaft
which had worn splines...
Kick start is not really needed as its a race bike...what to do? leave all kick start gear out and weld up hole in
casing that shaft goes through?...or just put all kick start gears back in but not use it?
options...what would you do?

Yep convert it to push start only BUT!!! don't weld the case up get a plug made in the shape of a top hat, thread the centre and hold it in with a big washer. The case can warp if welded, found that out the hard way.

what's the shafts function? has it even got anything to do with the kick starter?

the shaft drives the kick start, it's the bit that sticks out that you bolt the kick start to. If you leave it in you still have to leave all the internal gears and springs connected or else it vibrates on the case and may finish the cracks off leading to gearbox failure from the loose bits rattling round inside.
