View Full Version : When parking or stopping?

When you park/stop your bike, what is your preference? do you use the side stand to shut it down or the key? Kill switch?
Do you always leave it in gear or select neutral?

I have always (if memory serves me correctly) used the 'select 1st then side stand' to turn the bike off, thus happy that it will not roll off the side stand.

Use kill switch or key.
95% of the time in neutral.

I always put mine in neutral and use the key. Same as I do for cars. I guess it's what I was taught way back when I learned to drive.

In fact my side stand cut out does not work as I discovered the other day when I only kicked it up halfway and took off! Luckily it flicked up when it touched down on the first slow bend. I have since lubed the side stand and make sure it is all the way up before I take off.

You might want to check that switch,,when their shot the bike don't go.

Anyway, neutral an turn it off with the key.

I always select neutral and turn off with the key. If I'm on a slope I'll then pop it in 1st and check the gear is engaged.

Always use the key to turn off the bike, never the side stand or kill switch.

Most of the time left in gear, only exception is the BMW if I want to then roll it onto the centre stand after parking. Being in gear stops it rolling backwards enough to go onto the stand. Discovered that after a lot of swearing and tugging on the bike the first time...

neutral, sidestand, key off.

There is no other way. Gear is only engaged on an incline.

Thinking about it, my first bike drop was because I turned the bike with the key, sat there undoing my helmet/taking my gloves off. Enough time had elapsed for me to get off the bike with the side stand still up...from then on I changed to side stand always.

OK, with both bikes turn off with key then, depending on which one:
* 400 set the parking brake - have set the tilt lock before turning off the key... [a virtual chocy fish if you can work out what it is]
* 650 set side stand and then heave the heavy thing onto its centre stand if being parked for some time - leave in first if necessary

I lie mine down using my ankle as a damper to avoid scratching or jolting the bike.
This only works when the neighbour is home to,
A, help me get out from under the thing and,
B, help prepare me for my next outing.
Thinking of getting the SL125 road legal now.

I have to turn the key on my bike. When I put the side stand down and get off, I turn the wheel towards the side stand. I leave the bike in neutral most of the time or in first if I'm not on flat ground. I always turn my bike on for 30 to 60 secs before I hop on and get goin. I'm so in the habit of leaving it in neutral that one time I turned it on while it was in first and it jumped forward, kicked up the stand then promptly went sideways and on to me, lucky I caught it!

That's sound remarkably like the time I laid the CB over at the top of your driveway, without a scratch I might add. Quicker thinking and it would have stayed upright had I kicked the side stand out

Neutral, sidestand and then kill switch. (the Kawasaki has RFID, so no key)
Same for the GNthing, except it has a key (not for long)

Neutral > turn off ignition > put bike in gear > sidestand down

I used to leave it parked in neutral but have not done it since our first earthquake in Sept 2010 when the bike had a wee lie down.

Clutch in - front brakes hard - stoppie - neutral - kill switch - sidestand.

Key - neutral (if on flat) - sidestand. I have never forgotten the sidestand but had it bounce back slightly on the Hyobag a couple of years back & as I set it on the ground in heavy rain it shot back as the weight went onto it & I had a wee lie down with it, small crack in mirror plastic but good otherwise

stop, clumsily find neutral, sidestand then key,

i dunno if the kill switch even works iv never used it, kick stand works though quite often get muddled up at servos for some reason and end up killing the bike via kickstand

I always turn my bike off with the kill switch. That way the panel is still live when I'm refilling at a service station and I need to reset my trip meter. Perhaps a reason I don't own a KTM.

I also leave it in neutral.

Mrs H always leaves her bike in first gear. She has some strange dread notion about it otherwise rolling off its sidestand. However I'm generally the one who has to reposition it afterwards, and the thing is always in effing gear.

The only time I have ever seen the kill switch used as a means to stop, I got caught unable to start my poxy bike, as the FROSTY bloke that had test ridden it uses the kill switch as a default option

I only put the bike back in gear if I think I am on a slope. Oh, and welcome to Maha's world. He accuses me of being inconsistent with whether I leave Millie in or out of gear :innocent:

Neutral, sidestand, ignition off. Only ever in gear on slight slope. On more severe slopes I find somewhere else to park...

On the burgman it was: come to stop, side stand out to kill ignition, hand brake on. Yes, I said hand brake.

sidestand, and if i have the time after a long ride i give it a minute to actively cool down before shutting off the power with my key. Short-term/normal parking in neutral and 1st when i don't trust it or on a hill.

I've always been advised again using the killswitch (outside of an emergency situation ;) ) because the circuit behind it tends to be more fragile and if that breaks, you're screwed (maybe that's brand specific, i don't know). But you have to turn your key anyway, so i don't feel the need to be anywhere near that thing.

Clutch in, stop, turn off key, sidestand.

Mechanic told me never to use the kill switch/sidestand kill switch because it can confuse the ECU.

I think the ECU is permanently confused, since the engine cuts out of it's own accord when idling from time to time, always has - und zen you musst use ze proper, very German schtarting procedure or ze bike vill not schtart again, but I digress...( apologies to our German friends on here :o )

Always leave the bike parked in gear in case someone/something of a greater mass bumps into it with sufficient force at the correct angle to roll it off the stand...hey, it could happen.

Huge one handed stoppie, just before stopped hip flick to the left to get it onto full lock, flick the side stand down so the engine dies and use the left hand to turn off the key and remove same as rear wheel touches down. Saves heaps of time.

So I just use the key, then make sure its in neutral

I usually go neutral, sidestand, key but if I'm riding the DR and get home late I use the kill switch to turn it off at the gate and then push it up the drive way so as not to wake the kids, I leave the key on so I can see where I'm going and avoid the bikes/scooters/skateboards strewn across the drive.

neutral, key off, side stand. Don't use kill switches. Only pop into gear if on slope as I tend to start the bike whilst still on side stand an let it warm up whilst donning gloves.

There's no correct way ... just habit . and it's hard to change a habit ...

I always hold in the clutch until the engine has stopped ... (I don't trust neutral lights .. no reason just don't trust them)

I use the kill switch or the side stand cut out to kill the engine (and sometimes I forget to turn the key off as well.) This is about keeping good hold of the bike till the engine has stopped - reaching for a key takes one hand off the bars ... most people use their right hands to reach the key - which means you're a long way from the front brake if you need it ...

I do tend to have it in first, rather than neutral (which is why I hold the clutch until the engine has stopped.) If I put it into neutral, then I have to put it back into first because ...

I leave it in gear to A) Stop it rolling anywhere and B) stop any fucker moving it .. if they don't know about bikes it just makes it that much harder foer someone else to move it ... I've watched non-riders try to move a bike out of a parking space so they could get their cage in there .. the bike was in gear and the shitheads had no idea what to do so they could push it ... I never enlightened them and the bike stayed where the owner left it ...

Like oneofsix I leave the bike on the side stand warming up while I put gear on - so the time to change to neutral is when I'm startimg the bike ..

There's no "correct" way or "right" way ... as long as you do it safely and the bike winds up not running, turned off and parked, then all is well.

Key off, clutch out, sidestand down, left in gear unless it's going on the centrestand. Haven't put a bike on a sidestand in neutral for ages, well at least not since the late night Suzie on a Suzi incident back in mumble mumble...:devil2:

Can't (and wont) disagree with that assumption, truth is though, there is no correct/proper way it would seem. OAB and Mark Waters have the best way of attending to the subject matter.

Poll results without a poll?...priceless.

I use the kill switch, side stand then keys. I always park my bike in first because our carport is on a slight slope. I'll put it in neutral while I warm the bike up, then put it back into first while I do a 3 point turn to roll it back out.

Note to self: need a garage.

Mmm yeah, it's wedged between the carport wall on the right and a car on left, then my partner parks his bike behind mine! I have to park it with the back wheel on an angle so that I can push it past his front wheel :)

Good practice pushing my bike around though!
