Got the lastest photos today off the Katana gsx1000 former AMA bike that is getting pieced together in calfornia by a MC shop,I found some old school tickie race keihins that the factory bikes used back in the day....hopefully it will be finished before august ,I know it isn't the same as what is raced in NZ but i wanted something period correct and slow compared to others .

grab a 750 seat and save the one that's on it for a rainy day, they're irrepairable

I'll do you a deal for the seat.

Those weren't the horrendously expensive set of early CR's that were on ebay I hope.....

Most of the Kats that got seriously tweaked in period used 33 Mikuni smoothbores anyway. They were readily available whereas the CR's were rocking horse poo.

Looking nice though - carry on.

whats so special about them? serious question.

also, has anyone ever cut a yard off the arse of these bikes? instead of the huge overhang behind the shock mounts with the pillion seat and room for a weeks groceries, it should just stop there.

Unavailable anymore in the original material.

from memory the 1100's had a sort of alcantra type finish? the 750's were vinyl and different colours?

This was Vance and hines race bike back in the day,it has rgb500 front end but Im using just the magnesuim capliers as the forks are to $$$ to crash with. Most off the gsx1000 used mikuni smoothbores 33mm but most off the teams that had raced with the 750 class/1000 class 77-onwards has these tickle carbs.Pop was the importer when he was set up in hollywood for keihin back in the day.The carbs came from Reg Pridmore, they are worth more than a engine rebuild.

The seat covers can be found new in japan without too much fuss,I think it was japan.webike.net or japan yahoo auctions are the best place to find period correct pieces.

Yeah, the 1100 had a brushed vinyl covering.

It meant that the join between the two coloured materials could be vinyl welded which is what gave the extremely fine join line.

The 1000cc Kat was built to comply with the F one limits of the day mainly in England/Europe and the US , outside those areas we got the 1100cc versions . NZ alone got the 6hr/black pipe SXZ models build ups by Suzuki NZ. Still a great looking bike 30+ years on, rode a SD once big heavy long reach to the bars etc .

The 'black piper' name tag referred specifically to the wirewheel ET and EX models.

Thx Katman I stand corrected though didn't some of those exhaust get fitted to the Kats? Either way I'd still have 1 in my garage anytime I win lotto.

The 'black pipers' had the same larger diameter exhaust outlet that was on the WW Katanas but had the two inner header pipes still being chrome silver. The T model black pipers had the outer headers and mufflers painted black while the X models outer headers and mufflers got the black chrome treatment.
