Exhaust rattle?

Hi there,

(please excuse the words I use, not up on the terminology)

MY DR-Z has an aftermarket exhaust on it, and the part where the rear "silencer" joins to the pipe that leads to the engine block is not a tight fit, it has a sort of clip around it that you tighten with a bolt, when the bike revs at a certain range it vibrates and makes a nasty noise.

To me it looks like some padding/tape needs to be wrapped around the pipe before the silencer part is slide over the top and then tightened, what is the name of that sort of heat proof tape .. and is it the right thing to do ?

Definitely won't be a muffler bearing. Fit a tapered nipple, that'll sort it :niceone:

Before replacing the muffler bearing (expensive) you could change the muffler oil to a heavy weight full synthetic. Use a 50w - don't use a multi grade like 10w40.

Assuming it is held together with springs?

Maybe you just need to replace them? or check if you are missing any

Tried tightening it? My bike has a similar attachment, i can't see how it would rattle if it's tight.

Yeah .. they aere all taking the piss ...

You had it right first time .. wrap heat-proof stuff around the pipe before shoving it into the muffler ... or maybe the exhaust clamp you are using is too big ... or have a look and see if there is a mount of the bracket to hold the whole exhaust system ... if there shoud be one and if it's not attached that could cause it to rattle badly ...

On the other hand .. there's a small gap at the join between the pipe and muffler on my 1250 .. sounds Orsome .. crackles and pops on the overrun every time . I blip the throttle in town just to hear it ..

To me it sounds more like an issue with the powerband.
