View Full Version : How do you all feel about publicity?

I have been going to the Auckland bucket meetings for a little while now and have met a lot of awesome people, had the best day every time I have been, and am in a sense, savagely addicted.

However, having run many extremely successful dance parties and music events (including motorsports events eg. Drift championships etc.), I have noticed one thing that I feel is missing from these meetings.
A little more public support, food and drink eateries and maybe some music going.

I don't know exactly how the community feels about having that sort of thing at the buckets... Maybe some reasons people wouldn't want more spectators could include things like things going missing from the pits, having to keep an eye on trouble, etc. And ofcourse, with any public event, those kinds of things are what we would need to be cautious of. Not making these events public could also be something that has been agreed upon with the people who own the kart tracks and so forth. Either way, I feel this is a sport that deserves some public support and could do well with some slight persuasion to bring a little more to these events.

How do you all feel about having public support at these events?
Would you all be for or against having music (DJs, bands, whatever) playing at these events?
Would anyone be keen on something like sausage sizzles or taco stands?

Just a thought that was lingering in my mind... Let me know what you all think about it :)
I wan't to get some respectable opinions before suggesting anything fancy!

My take:
Without thinking too much about it I'm pretty happy with how it is.
I see a certain charm in the grass root nature of buckets.
Growth in promotion and fostering spectator interest would probably be better concentrated towards the 'real racebike' classes at Superbike meetings.

That's what I assumed. There seems to be a specific culture to it and i definitely don't want to mess with it!
However, Buckets definitely seem to have progressed enough to start calling it F4 racing, rather than "Buckets".
As a race class, I think F4 is pretty much as good as it gets before the larger events for literbikes and midweights (aside from the 250 racing which im not really into).

Fair comments mate but if a DJ or some dick with a ghetto blaster or a band (all that would most likely play shit I don't like) started playing loud music at a Buckets meeting I was at I would have to punch him right in the face, smash his equipment and tell him to fuck right off!
Spectators, yes, food and drinks maybe, music or any other loud sound that doesn't come from a motorbike, FUCK NO!!!

Fair enough!

I would say the biggest issue with music would be choice of genre.
If it were to happen I would make sure there would be a line up of different music.
Music would more be suited to the GP situations rather than the meetings anyway if at all... Sort of a post race day music-ready mingle, Definitely not while the races are happening.

I definitely am down with food and drink stores... The amount of times I have wanted something other than tap water at a meet is far too many. Plus maccas is a decent effort if you are all in your leathers and have to drive there.
Would be a cool idea having a sausage sizzle etc.

Does anyone know the rules that the kart tracks have given us on track days?

I don't know the agreement your local club is working under but it's very common to have two rates for track hire.

One for "closed to club" events and another much higher rate for a promoted event at which you charge entry to the public.

I think you may have misunderstood me. I don't care what sort of music you might play. My point is that I don't want ANY music fagging up Bucket meetings. All I want to hear is the announcements, riders making excuses for not winning and revvin' engines.

Although I think we could do with some positive exposure it's hard enough to get enough numbers of officials to run meetings... and the more riders the more important that would be. I run the bulk of the North Island Series and we just scraped in money wise this year and could do with a few more competitors next season. That said I would cap numbers at around 45-55 entrants if required. Yeeha music wouldn't work for me either, the absolute silence after racing is something I love.. when you're not racing the noise doesn't feel so good!! Be good to drag some younger riders off their dirt bikes for a go at our sport.

If you are wanting to turn it into a circus, we'd be happy for you to supply us with flag marshals, timing people and other officials. we just want to ride our bikes, and everyone who helps run it, rides.

cully has not been on his bike for months (he's the starter) and when NSR runs the NI series, he never brings a bike. Flag marshals are always having to be yelled for, those doing the timing run between the chook shed, and where they post results, and sometimes get to ride their bikes.

If you are not able to organise food for yourself, there is something wrong. we just do rolls on the run, but if I am coming later, I might grab us some subway. there is coffee there, it's not hard to make. Occasionally Bear turns up to make us some, but I've not bothered asking him if it is worth his while (might ask him tomorrow if I see him at work).

I am half deaf and HATE loud music, at the end of the day I would be likely to grab any speaker and shove it onto the track, as after riding, I like to relax. We used to run family trail rides, and honestly, all of us had to take chill pills to stop yelling at the kids still wanting to ride their bikes while we cleaned up. Our kids were all exhausted or helping clean up, and you'd hear them commenting that they wished the kids would shut up already.

Basically buckets/f4 is fine how it is, but more help is always good.

I dislike it intensely. I try to avoid it.

It's about as crap as the bullshitters producing it.

Making it more of an 'event' could be positive. What/when/where are the questions. Some sort of minor after match function generally goes down well but I don't know about too much going on during racing. Of course after the meeting generally it's all go, home. Years ago on a Saturday I supplied, at cost, a bit of food. Typically something like beef curry on rice. I never had any left over. Maybe something on a Saturday at Mt Wellington when it's a bit more relaxed. Raceday can be a bit busy. The more I think about it, it could be quite good promotion. Perhaps on a few designated Saturdays rather than on every race weekend Saturday.

Now the TRRS was a great weekend and had all of that and 45+ buckets. But someone put a stop to it and now we have nothing :baby::(

if all this was to happen along the lines of the old Taupo Road Race Spectacular I for one would be all keen and even get both bikes up and running again

food stalls bouncy castles and bike bikes bikes . YES PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOUD BAND at the end of the day would be cool as well

Whilst I think a DJ and all that BS would seriously detract from the sports awesome atmosphere, I have to agree with comments made regarding calling them buckets versus F4. Yeah a few of the bikes are still buckets of shit but in no way does it attract riders nor promote the class. A few younger riders coming through would really add another level to the class I think. What does suck is the lack of officials and flaggies etc but it does get done eventually. Maybe the parents that come with the younger riders would marshal?

I think anything that could turn F4/5 buckets into something that resembles karting or other classes where fun and helping out another racer gets put second to winning, can get bent. I have never met a bunch of good bastards willing to help others out and race knee to knee.

In saying all that rambling, I would very much like to do some more short videos of racers and their bikes. The personalities in this class are great! old bastards and all

Here's one and he is also a miserable old c#$t to boot.

Not too sure where or how a band or DJ pumping out the sounds would fit in with a days racing? I have an opinion and it's what you would expect from one of the above.
I do like a nice strong coffee though and have been known to have the very occasional pie, so have no issue with either of those.

I object to one of the other good folk saying something about proper racing, WTF, I raced bikes in UK for years on most of the circuits up there and the racing I do here is as proper as it gets. What other class in NZ can get a full grid and have to split the races into A,B&C grade as they have too many entries.?

Buckets are a proper race class.

I love music and bikes. Country to Dub-step. Dirt bikes to Super bikes. :headbang:
Most racing events or shows you go to have music playing in the back ground to set the tone of the event. Kids walk around with head phones all the time & expect their whole lives to have a f#^king theme tune.
How many of you have a tune you play on the way to a meeting, to psyche you up for the day. Mine are Iggy Pops "Search & Destroy" and Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name".
I'm ok with music at racing as long as it not to distracting for participants.
Getting the public along may give a bigger pool of new riders, not just the ex & current racers, road riders and the kids of both.
Any national points racer will tell you how the sport needs way more financial support not just every cent they earn. This has a direct relationship with, size of crowd, sponsors and promotion of events.
Maybe with a bit of self promotion we could be a feeder class not only for road racers but also their fans.
I agree the sport may benefit from some promotion Haz, but as with most sports, a few people carry most of the work load on their shoulders. This is something that would need to be run by some new blood with the approval of the current regime.

I wear earplugs from the time the first bike fires up til the last one shuts down. So less noise is good.
I can't see us ever being a spectator sport and to be honest like it that way. It's about the racing and any peripheral bullshit would probably just piss me off. Do like it when the coffee van show up though I must admit.

No matter what we do do the majority of the "real bike" racers are never going to take us seriously and I don't see that as a bad thing.

Agreed! The chances of us growing this sport and getting more people into riding these bikes is incredibly high when a public event vibe is set to it...
If we can get the public to come and watch these events like they do the superbikes (a huge part of that crowd do NOT ride motorcycles) we can get more people eager to try it, more people = more development and more money into the sport. More public attendance will also give us the ability to make our track days or GP days bigger, better, safer, and most of all, a view change on the sport...

If we had public attendance and made this a more commonly watched sport, maybe track owners will re-think disallowing us race on their tracks?
If the crowd grows, the sport grows, if the sport grows, the energy grows, if the energy grows, the hype over the sport grows, if the hype grows, the rider database grows, if the rider database grows, the kids have more people to look up to, which grows the crowd yet again.... Best cycle ever!

I appreciate all of your comments, and while some, I disagree with, I am trying to get a feel for how much of this sport needs/wants promotion and at what level.

I am not in any way trying to destroy this sport, because just like most of you, I love it to death the way it is...
I will say that those who are making comments mostly about the music, that is the most minor thing i am trying to bring up. this is MOSTLY about publicity... food stands, music, gimics, la dee dah, they are all just ways to add publicity.

Please think MAINLY about the addition of spectators and growing this sport. (eg. getting the kids in to it and adding more all round respect for it).

If I were to be given the thumbs up from most of the riders to go ahead and start promoting the sport, (carefully of course) I would be happy to bare the burden all on my own shoulders!

when I started buckets I thought the same in the sense that it should be more popular/publicized. But after awhile you realize that buckets is about people with different backgrounds, skills, money... Talents haha, all with a love of bikes and racing hard. Without the pressure or judgement of on lookers who judge on the most expensive or prettiest bike. so buckets is fine how it is. What you need to do is create or run a sub event or classes for development of younger or more competitive riders...

Sure, we all have the same interest, we all love racing bikes and have a similar addiction... However, I feel that is implying that bucket racing is destined to die with the current bucket racers... If this sport isn't promoted, the numbers are only going to thin over time. I know we can always be into it and so can our kids... but no one else??? why would we condemn our own sport?

If a new sub class were to be created it would either kill the other one or divide the numbers. Neither are good.

Is there no option to build and develop this sport further without destroying its attractive features?

A poll suggests that action is going to be taken, this is JUST to get an idea of what demographic is more likely to make this sport develop further, etc...

I'm starting to ignite shit here and don't want to be 'that dickhead who's trying ruin the sport' - that's not me... I'm just getting a feel for WHY it is so underdeveloped, yet the effort that goes into the bikes can range up to thousands of hours.

I'm just surprised that people don't want a little more out of the sport they work SO hard to develop bikes for...

please do not assume that i'm here to do anything about it, nor actually care about anyones opinion... It's just a conversation that i wanted to have with the F4 racers of New Zealand.

Maybe buckets isnt underdeveloped, in fact it is the most popular form of Roadracing in NZ. The people who developed it are clever talented people, just happens they dont have huge ego's and need admiration from the public, seems they just like racing.

There are two main breeds of bucket, them up norf and dem down sarf, down south they are mixed with the general racing population, superbikes , 600's buckets, F3 just another class, still dont have Bands, strippers, do have food, organisation and plenty of racing, I disagree that its the track owners preventing buckets mingling with the other racing classes, maybe the problem is the other racing classes. We have plenty of flash buggers racing buckets here, Scout Fletcher #2 125 GP, Al Hoogie Cube Racing 1000cc ASBK, some of the 250 proddie boys, me haha.

I dont think its much of a spectator sport, might be if its got your mates racing. If Im not racing I dont go to the track, and a band wouldnt help, strippers might

Buckets come and go over the years. Bikes like the FXR come along and the class picks up. I don't think it'll die out for lack of promotion, it hasn't so far. Remember street magics, we ran them in a separate class, but only on the kart track. We have out little "fads". Up norf we are separated from the real racing but that's just the way it is. In Auckland the real bikes used to only run at Pukekohe and a bucket was a bit challenged on that track. One thing that could be done would be to enter a group of top buckets at Wanganui and group them together in the pits and have some sort of on-track identification so the crowd could pick them out. Wanganui has a very diverse crowd and group of racers. Promotion never hurt any class. It would even be a bit of a slap in the face for the "real" racing crowd if something starts happening and works. Maybe even a static display at a real bike, or car, or kart, meeting, or even school fairs. Perhaps even an inter-school challenge. It could start with just the young guys currently racing with trophies being presented at a school assembly.

now I know this would go down well at Orewa College as they have 3 or 4 bucketers in the waiting (that I know off) and plenty of young guys waiting for the chance to throw a leg over something

the 2 hour usually get quite a few spectators so if you can swing a pie cart and coffiy van I'm sure it wouldn't go a miss

the big thing is Mt Wellington is to SMALL!!!! to support all the idears

how about inviting a few maggazine edditors out for a ride or 5. Get one of them into building an f5 bike as an article in the mag. Means i would buy there mag for as many issues as it takes to build it :niceone:

What about Paeroa????? I would be keen to race there. Had a look through the entry form this year but couldn't find a class to enter the FXR in. I am shore we would get better numbers than we did at Hampton Downs. That long straight is a bit hard on a bucket engine. The posties hang out together there, so do the chairs. Im sure we could get a group of us together, but remember "no patches" :)

Buckets is fine as it is. At the moment it's about racing, I'd hate to see it turn into entertainment. Not that I can see that working anyway, the general public just doesn't give a toss about any sport that doesn't involve a ball and serious TV airplay.
As for the street meetings, I'd love that to happen but just can't see it in the NI, the programmes at Paeroa and Whanganui are plenty full as it is.
Big tracks? You can enter your bucket in the development class at the AMCC rounds at HD, the fact that few bother may tell you something about the track and the way most bikes up here are set up.

All good ideas, maybe best to start by talking with the people who are allready heavily involved in organising the meetings you have been to and liked so much, as they are keen to promote the sport too.

A quick chat with Brian, Mel, Cully and Tim to see what their thoughts are, would be a good start if you want to help kick things along.

My thoughts too, doesn't hurt to ask the question and offer assistance if it's wanted. Burger vans and music don't do much for me at these events but our sport deserves a better profile for the good of motorcycle racing in general and if a bit of promo works (excluding the mentioned) then all good and well. I am sure its not going to go from 30 riders to 90 riders overnight at most meetings. As I have said before it'd be nice to get more young riders along so we can watch them step onto the world racing ladder.. I overtook Avalon once or twice a few years back... can't see that happening again!!

No. A poll suggests someone wants to take action and the poll gives others a chance to have their say BEFORE action is taken. Sounds to me that you are barking up the wrong tree.
Buckets is fine, don't fuck with it!!!

I don't bark, nor am i at the wrong tree. I'm just asking a question dude... relax.
