WTF!!!!!!!!
Vicki Harvey of Opunake is having the op in November at a cost $30,000, which the govt is paying the bill! Whats more "Vicki" is 73 years old! So, according to the NZ govt, we can't afford some life saving operations, but life changing? OK thats allright? First the student load B/S and now this? I'm never voting Labour again! Right, which worthless third party do I vote for as I'm never voting for National as well :puke:

What the...?
Deep down inside I have always believed I was a Super Bike racer, maybe I can get some government funded skill implanted?
Be happy with a new bike, I could afford one if I wasn’t paying SO MUCH TAX!!!
SO happy its being used for a good cause tho.

In fact all the NZ governments for the past x amount of years have paid out for x amount of sex changes a year. (thats National and Labour)
This is old news....
There was a 20/20 or 60 minutes segment on it last year.
They have about 20 people apply each year to become transsexuals. (MtF or FtM)
They have to pass a stringent test to get the operation. There are x amount of Dr's who question them and put them throu certain things to qualify.
Not every one qualifys for the operation.
The cost is very high to get the operation done.
Many go on the game to help them pay for it... which is a shame.
There are more mtf than there are ftm.

This pisses me off, but not as much as all the assistance given to middle-income people WITH kids - what about those of us WITHOUT kids? Why should we have to pay extra taxes for those of you who choose to breed? We have low pay too but because we don't have kids, we get sweet FA in the way of assistance from the government. Quite frankly, I'd vote for any party that offered ANY person on a low income a tax cut or financial assistance. Having kids is a CHOICE and if you can't afford them, DON'T have them! Can you imagine the response if we went to the government and said "I'd love a C-class Mercedes but I really can't afford it, can you help me?"
Having kids is like having animals - if you can't afford to feed and care for them, DON'T bloody have them! And if you DO, don't expect the rest of us to PAY for that decision!

Inlinefour - How would you feel in you knew in yourself that you were not a male, but in fact a female in a males body. And that you had to live that way for years and years... That has to be so hard for these folks.
The government are only making it happen for one or two people a year.
There are so many that want this operation. Many know that they will never ever have the operation and just learn to accept it. But why should they accept it.. Its not their fault that nature played a cruel trick.
It is so hard for these people... many commit suicide.. go on the game to pay for these operations. Some never go throu with the complete operation.
FtM - They dont get a penis put on as they havent ever been able to make it work properly...
MtF - They have the complete operation. They reverse the penis skin inwards.
If it will help, then I agree with the government helping out these folks.

...but having kids benefits the country, therefore parents are carrying out a public service and should be supported.
The extra money that families get is not to reward them for having kids but to help support the kids.
Bringing up children costs more than any benefits that the gummint might pay.

Plus there is a general rule for surgery that if someone if old, then often it is not considered worth while. A 73 year old individual versus a 23, 33, 43 old. Or more to the point, someone with a lfe threatening problem??? If I was confused about my gender then I'd fork out the 30 grand myself. Hell, I've forked out almost 28 grand for my student loan in 2 years :woohoo:

I think you are a little short-sighted and selfish here. I know there are people on the dpb with 7 kids by the time they hit 25 and all that but lets talk about the general population. It is not a little commitment to have kids and a bit of support from the community is well warranted i think. NZ gives almost no support to child families anyway. As far as i recall NZ is country nr 112 on the list of country's supporting child families. Kids creates LOTs of jobs, today's kids will pay taxes when you retire, today's kids will be the nurses that will wipe your ass when your to old to do it your self, they will give you the hip replacement you might need when you fall of your electric scooter. So i general I'd say we need to help the child families and single parents a good deal. We have to try to minimise abuse of the system but that's the same with all systems.
I think you should worry about the people on the dpb that have been on it for years.
DAFE : If you wote NZ first does that ensure that we'll not get an other labor government ??????? Don't think so. Who knows what NZ 1st will do :puke:
EDIT : I do agree that there should be no money for sexchange ops. It seems a waste of doctor time to eval all these people too..... If they want a sex change theyll have to pay them self. If a sexchange can be paid for why then not boob job's or nose job's ??? and where does it end ? It would be better to pay for laser eye treatment, much cheaper (and i could use some  )

This individual... who abused young children should not get it done on the Government, they should in this case pay for it themselves.
But some (whom I have meet) you would never know that they are not born a female. Yep they have the adam's apple totally reduced in size...
Some who have had it done are stunning. They have gone overseas to get the operation done.
They truely are born in the wrong body.
I know a F2M and you would not know that they were not born a male.
I knew him when he was a female... and was good looking. But the transformation was shit..... he looks and talks like a male....
He was born in a wrong body.
So why not help out one or two a year.... as I say not everyone will get it done.... they will still have to pay for it themselves.
How many of you guys who first saw "Miriam" in a picture thought WOW.....
well she hasnt completed the full operation yet... Yet she looks good..

A sex change operation for a 73-year-old has set the opposition questioning the Government's priorities with health funding.
At the end of this year Vicky Harvey will see a plastic surgeon for a $30,000 operation to make her a woman.
National Party health spokesman Paul Hutchison says there is cause for concern when there are 180,000 New Zealanders waiting for surgery.
Dr Hutchison says when you have tens of thousands of New Zealanders in pain waiting for operations, sex change surgery needs to be looked at.

I'm not short-sighted, I'm actually long-sighted, and I wasn't referring to people being on the DPB (don't even get me started on THAT!), I'm referring to all the tax breaks and financial assistance that the government bribes voters with. I still maintain that having children is a choice, like owning flash cars/bikes, taking overseas holidays or having pets. If you can't afford to have kids you shouldn't expect other people to help pay for your choice. I have no problem with people HAVING children, my problem is with these people expecting financial assistance to do so.
I have worked in many places where women (and it has always been women in my experience) have to take days off when their kids are sick or it's the school holidays and everyone else has to work harder to cover for them. And as for paid parental leave - again, your choice to have kids, why should your employer pay for you to be home with them as well as having to pay for someone to do your job until you return?
We don't have kids by choice, but if I couldn't have kids for any reason I would feel exactly the same way. To my mind it is no different from racial or gender discrimination, it is giving an unfair financial advantage to certain sectors of the community.
Whatever happened to living within your means? If you can't afford a particular lifestyle, you don't ask someone to slip you a few quid so you can! We're not on large salaries and we have bills to pay the same as they do, but we don't get any tax breaks, incentives or even community service cards. I can't go on the unemployment benefit because I am married and my husband is in full-time work, and being self-employed means I even have to pay my own ACC levies.
I realise we need to replace the population, but considering I have paid taxes most of my life, I don't feel I should also be expected to pay for people to breed the next generation! And besides, I hate kids!

It's a sad fact that the economic group that shouldn't breed produce too many offspring to feed the cycle,a tiny fraction in NZ,but look at Africa and Asia, how the hell do you stop them? But we shouldn't hold the children to ransome over this, they are the ones we need to help the most,to give their children the best chance.
NZ along with other so called developed nations has been forced into a 2 income family for over 25yrs,most of you wouldn't know a time when mothers didn't have to work.I was brought up in an era when it was a slur on a mans earning ability that his wife had to go out and work,it shamed them, and I remember my father not allowing my mother to get a job.Our neighbourhoods were full of mothers working hard all day bringing up their kids, always there, our friends mothers were always there,a safe nutuered enviroment. No one threw concrete blocks off motorway bridges.
We have 4 children and have been a single income family for 25 yrs,the system is not made for us and it's been and still is bloody tough. We have taken some low income assistance gratfully, but being selfemployed for the last 10 yrs I get squat,it's all on my shoulders.

I don't give a shit if someone is straight, gay, bisexual, transsexual or what, but I do object to that person expecting the government to pay for it. This person is 73 years old - surely if they have felt trapped in the wrong body all their life, they should have done something about it sooner? It's a bit late to start whingeing at that age - does he/she really think having a sex change is going to make much difference to their life at 73? Hell, at that age it's likely they will die on the operating table!
I have friends from all backgrounds so please don't play the 'you guys hate gays' card, it really is tiresome. I think what everyone is upset about is the fact this person wants the government to fund it. I'm sorry, but it doesn't come in the same category as a lifesaving heart operation or something like that. And I think all of us would have a bit more sympathy if this person was 23 and not 73. It's no different to a morbidly obese person eating themselves senseless for 70 years and then expecting the government to pay for a stomach stapling operation or liposuction. (Wait, I forgot, it's actually Pipi that pays for that!).
We're not all narrow minded, we just get pissed off at preferential treatment.

'fraid I'm going to have to disagre on this one.
While I recognise the discomfort those that are "born in the wrong body" must feel... and I freely admit I can't relate to it - I find it very difficult to place their needs over someone that is waiting for a life saving operation.
Just as I find it difficult to understand why you would ever place anyone with a "pain issue" ahead of someone with a life threatening issue.
Saving for my health care was done for me - by way of taxes I have paid over the last 20 years, and now I still have to pay more to private health care as those "compulsory savings" aren't enough.

I'm referring to all the tax breaks and financial assistance that the government bribes voters with.
Maybe it's just that I've giving up on the news and politics as it seems to be only bad news, reality TV and wine box scandals that are worthy of broadcasting. Therefore i am not really up with the newest suggestions from the "regulators" and can not comment on any future tax breaks promised for families with kids. But i can say that i received no help with my kids and unless things have changed dramatically in the last 5 years I don't think there is all that much to get for "normal" middle class families. But in general i think the benefit/support system is all wrong. The more you pay in tax the harder it is to get any support when you need it. If you are temporarily unemployed there is a quarantine period depending on your income .... bullshit in my view. I guess for the relative little benefit there is for middle class families it would perhaps be better to take all financial child support away and give it back to all NZ'ers.
I still think parental leave should remain. how it should be paid for is an other matter. Having it paid for by the employer seems wrong as that kind of makes future mothers much less employable. I think as a nation NZ should stick together and take care of our own (help to selfhelp, no leeching) and stop being so dam jealous when the nabour gets 10c more then us.
....my problem is with these people expecting financial assistance to do so.
No problems with me then, i don't expect it. I'll will and have paid for my kids and they won't need to have a student loan interest free or not (Nowtheres something i think is unjust, "you" agreed to the terms now pay it back)
And besides, I hate kids!

All I'm saying is that the government is considering giving people a 30,000 operation because they dont like their flaming body image, and they are so depressed about it they might kill themselves.. Look at it this way, if some random woman wanted some liposuction and a boob job because she thought she was a super model trapped in an ugly fat body most any sane person would tell them to sod off.. Why the farq should it be any diffrent because some bloke reckons hes a woman trapped in a mans body or vice versa.

Agreed - all I am saying is that life and death issues should get priority over cosmetic and pain issues...
If councelling is an option that deserves consideration (and in this case it really sounds like it does... especially if this person wants to "change back"...!) then that should be the option presented/explored first.
As for the gun conversation - I think you and I have done that topic before.

What about all that stuff Beemer is on about... what about funding for stupid education that fails everyone, what about money spent on an army that doesn't even sum up...
Get over it and find something else to bitch about... narrow minded people like you really piss me off...
If you don't like it vote for someone else this time round...
Edit: And what about Joe Bloggs? Why didn't he/she save for thier own operation... oh right... they are assumably straight and therefore more deserving? twat
