As you might be aware, I have a softspot for Royal Enfields
well a few moons ago I was involved with an attempt at a speed record using a Royal Enfield
Well the silly buggers are at it again.
IT REALLY IS A GRASSROOTS ATTEMPT , I mean seriously these fella are on a shoestring
but if anyone is interested or , really would like to help please contact me
the engine they are using , won the AMA no1 plate and is on the limit for the design , the chassis could be a bit better ,,,,,,,,,but
I really wish them luck

If you knew the design of the engine , silly buggers is about right
from an engine that has a combustion efficiency of ( from memory ) 12 odd percent , (the better ones today are around 33 % ) These silly buggers get 41 bhp with , similar torques , sorry I cant remember off hand .
There has been A LOT of input from many knowlegable persons , all freely given .....
I hope they do ok ..

there was a Enfield yahoo group , we really put some work into the engine. Dan , being a dealer at the time took it one stage further. Some seriously talented people.
Im happy to say with some of my parts on the the bike it won the AMA plate. Dan then had a heart attack and the whole thing was shut down, Maartin and phil and I still occasionally email.
Alan Hitchcock , Dan Holmes and one guy in England , whose name escapes me right now , have really pushed the engine to its limit. We know what works in these things
There was a NZ guy who we have talked about on KB ( again name escapes me ) I bought the enfield parts from his widow when he died , He produced a strong bike alway ran mid field towards the front .....
ZTrouble is with these engines ( and why I like em so much ) is that they were designed fit for purpose, ie , just and no more. They were a sporting single , with ride to work reliability , I come along a few years later with high tech computers and run the numbers , NO FAT , i mean the parts are just perfect for what they do. For example the cooling fins JUST ENOUGH to remove the heat at 30mph ( 50 you start to get heat build up !!!)
how cool is that !!! designed in 1932 with a slide rule and a pencil ...and bang on the money
Well I see if Dan would like to send an intro mail or something ........

Someone who was better at Physics might correct this, but I understood that weight had little to no impact on outright speed, only acceleration.

In ChCh it was Bob Harris of course. Not a lot of enfield left in his motors....
I believe it was Don Sligo? not sure of spelling - who ran over 200 at Bonneville many years back now with a RE twin double on big doses of nitro. If you think the singles are marginal on cooling fin area, have a look at a twin....

they do have a better? head design
i feel unclean typing about "another cylinder" ,,,,
I just find it amazing how well they did design wise , using a pencil and a slide rule , I looked at the oil flow a few years back , and that floating bearing .... Im going weak kneed just thinking about it !!!

I think the last Reddich ones had the 'big head' design? Which is supposedly better... But I'm sure you knew that

better prts and valve sizes etc
BUT
larger valves, dont actually ( in some cases , bullets being one ) help
Honda have the same problem with the GB range , crap low speed metering and corresponding mixture strenth , prone to stalling !

Yes but alloy with cast in rocker boxes and more generous finning... By all accounts they were a big improvement performance wisebut then I know feck all about them

Snip
info as it stands
Hi Stephen , we are taking only one bike to Bonneville this time, it is the partially streamlined modified frame , normally aspirated 500cc bike , this is a electric start model as far as cases and it has Hitchcocks billet crankshaft, we are running Hitchcocks (cams) also. We have a nitrous bottle and we are hoping to set a record in the gas class without nitrous and then in the fuel class with nitrous. We have swapped out engines and have our best effort installed as of today. We will begin jetting and dyno tuning next work night and hope to get dialed in. Our nemesis last time with this bike was jetting , we were being cautious not to burn it up and was taking baby steps. Anyone who has jetting experience would understand that going down six jets sizes all at once is reckless! We ran out of time as many remember we were on the starting line with the engine running and they closed the track due to a fatality, in any event we are going back and we will make our best effort.
