Gravel left after road 'repairs'

Hi everyone

Just wanting to know the legality of some recent road repairs in Christchurch, in particular, leaving loose gravel on corners after the repair has been done (in this case, laying new underground power cables) on city streets (my street)

Had the road done again about 12 to three weeks ago (I know - the street was closed for most of this time) and they've recently come back to put the last bits on the top surface on, which has been nice - but they've left a whole pile of loose gravel all down the street and around the corners at both ends. While its a hell of a lot of fun sliding around them in my car, on the bike its bad enough to mean slowing down to a crawl. Are they allowed to leave t leave sites like this? I mean, even taking it slowly in the car its not flash.

Also, on the topic, why are they putting such bad surfaces on main roads? Its like they've decided to let a toddler on the grader its that bumpy, far worse than even the earthquake left it. (Talking about Innes road etc)

Gravel and Grit are fun as hell, Live on a hill you will love it even more.
I would advise calling the council and making mention of it, and asking if it could be swept they probably have something in plan,
but with the amount of working happening in Christchurch im sure contractors have a lot more on their minds than cleaning up a bit of gravel,

No they are not allowed to leave it like that.

Ring the council and scirt to complain - unswept and unsigned means they are in breach of contract - and it will be taken seriously.

Because the dumb fucks running the council are signing off substandard work because there was some earthquakes. Pisses me off big time too - it appears to have been used as an excuse to accept poor work under the theory it is needed in a hurry!

Cool - I'll give it a go then, just thought I'd look at what should be happening.
Most of the roads around my area are ruined so we'll see if anything happens about it.

@allanB - have you been out towards redcliffs/sunmer way? Its actually beyond a joke on how much work they haven't done in over two years on those roads, and the parts that have been 'repaired' have been made into 4wd tracks almost.

Anyway, yes. Call Council and tell em that the contractors have been back to reseal but didn't sweep away the gravel fill. When the contractor gets a corridor access part of the t&c's is reinstating to an adequate standard and the Council definitely likes to know if it's not.

Over the bumpiness of the reseal, same deal.

Haha, they seem to be loving this excuse; the length of time it takes any work to be done at the moment has me very suspicious on how its being run/handled

When I worked in a big corporation I found the magic word to get anything done was "liability"

Ring the coucil and advise that there is unfinished work in your street, that there is dangerous gravel left on the road, and just ask if the council's inattention to the completion to the project would make the council liable for any accidents that occur. Make sure you get someone in a position where they will understand the concept.

I think I remember reading somewhere that leftover stone chip has to be swept up by X amount of time after the sealing job.

Certainly complain to the council. And encourage a couple of people in your street to complain as well. A friend of mine once crashed a bike on an oil slick on a suburban street and complain to the council. They told him they weren't legally obliged to do anything about it unless 3 or more people complained about the same state of the street.
