View Full Version : Who has right of way?

This happend to me on the way home tonight.

Pull up at a 4 way stop sign, lets say I'm going south to north.

Across the intersection there is car from the north waiting to turn right (west)

On my right is a van travelling east to west....

I give way to the van (he's on my right) but he's giving way to the car ('cos he's on his right) but the car is giving way to me 'cos he's turning and I'm just crossing the intersection but I give way to the van (he's on my right) but he's giving way to the car...

(you get the idea)

 you have to love it when it goes wrong in a safe way. If you are all on stops and all going straight through then it becomes courage or curtsy. Fucking good luck. So who did get to go first? (unless you are still sitting there using your phone, which would be illegal)

Sorry just re-read that, the van, he was going straight through from your right so you rightly gave way to him, the other car was turning so goes last.

That looks like fun

Van, you then car is the correct "legal" way to proceed.
Car is turning right so has to give way to you and van. :woohoo:
Dont expect the van driver and car driver to know the road code either and you will live longer :scooter:

Does the fact that the car is turning make any difference to the van?

yes, turning traffic gives way to straight through

In the end we all sat there facing each other....
I gestured for the van to go.... he didn't so the car went, the van still wasn't going so I took a deep breath and hoped for the best.

I must admit though I thought the right hand rule was a simple give way to your right. I completely overlooked the tuning rule takes priority over that!

Know better now though.

A four way stop sign intersection is no different to a roundabout if you think about it.... I've seen big intersections with the traffic lights out, and traffic comes to a stop as no-one knows what to do. Came back through the same intersection later, and some clever council chap had put a circle of cones in the middle, all of a sudden it's a roundabout, and all the drivers are all of a sudden completely fine! Haha was rather funny.

The cunt with the biggest truck has right of way.

I always live by the philosophy that at a 4 way stop sign, the first guy to stop, can go first. If everyone comes to a complete and compulsary standstill, then you're sound as a pound ;)

You have right of way over the turning car and the car coming from your left.
The turning car has to give way to you the van and the car coming straight through from your left.

If it's in the Great city of Auckland and it's a Triumph adventurer or a 12 tonne flat deck Isuzu truck coming either way and the driver/rider sees your hesitation or the doubt in your eye,,,you just come second.

That's as I thought but it's not though.... if the van has right of way over the turning car even though the car is on the van's right. At a traffic island you give way to the right, you it doesn't matter where they are going.

I am stopped at a red light/right turning arrow, wanting to turn right. The light turns green, as does the arrow.

Who gives way?

Well me of course, as the wankers coming off the motorway run the red light in their hurry to get home :brick:

It took only one near miss for me to realise that I needed to stay stopped on a red light at this intersection. I really wish plod would show it a bit of attention. I would be rich indeed if I got paid for each time I have seen it happen.

I thought this was about the one at the top of Cuba Street. I used to work there so had to turn right at the four way stop every day. To be honest I think it was so confusing to people that they actually took some care and everyone manged to deal with it. Put signals up and there would be carnage.

Indeed, the very one in question.

Bit like that town (can recall where exactly) They removed all road signage and now everyone drives real slow because of the FUD (Fear, uncertainty & doubt). Wonder how that worked out long term? I'm not convinced by the concept myself. Lights aren't the answer but I'd prefer an island (where you can give way to the right without caring where anyone else is going) or a priority given to one of the roads (Preferably Able-Smith st)

Zackery !! If there were less signs people would have to think for themselves. God forbid. The law of the jungle would rule i.e. trucks get right of way over everyone, then gang members first, then the rest of us.

I'm a fan of less rules, learning to think for myself. I think.

A four way stop sign intersection is no different to a roundabout if you think about it....

Except you don't have to turn at a four way stop sign intersection.

Actually, there's a roundabout on Bell Rd that you don't have to turn for either. Well, maybe in the van, but certainly not on the Buell.
