View Full Version : 1980 Suzuki RM400T rebuild

Crasherfromwayback
26th June 2013, 18:07
If anyone is interested...I've just today started the slow rebuild process on my basket case 400T. This will be my day to day VMX race bike. I'll only use my SR for special occasions!

What I basically started with...284324

Move the SR aside... 284325

What I have now... 284326

The start... 284327

This...goes in there... 284328

I'll update it as I go. I have some Fox Factory Forx (they're 44mm compared to the stockers 38mm), and Fox Factory Shox for it too. Should be a good race bike when all is finished. Hope to have it finished by the time my ankle is right to ride again!

:-)

Cheers mate. I got lucky with the forks...came across them one night late on Ebay and the guy had listed them as simply *fat RM400 forks*. Paid about a third of what most sets seem to go for (there was only ever around 200 sets of Fox Forx made world wide). The shocks were a diff story. They were rebuilt for Brad Lackey to use on an RM400T, and seeing as he was one of my childhood heros...I simply had to have them. He wasn't allowed to use them as was under contract to another brand....so I got my mitts on them. Stunning rebuild on them by the geezer that did the work I must say...but they owe me around $1100.00. Ouch. Here they be...

lol. That SR needs tissues for most guests mate! Wait till you get a go on it. It feels like a KX125 after sitting on a KX500. It's around 8kg's lighter, and has 6HP more than a KX500. How's that sound to you?

Cool resto, what is the go with rusty spokes, replace one for one or can they be dressed?

29th June 2013, 09:02
So Pete is it just a case of reassembly with the new bits or is there a lot of resto to do on the wheels, swing arm etc ?
By the time its all finished the thought of getting it dirty/thrashed may be to much and you'll need a another one to be a racer.

Cool resto, what is the go with rusty spokes, replace one for one or can they be dressed?

You can clean 'em up with steel wool etc...but they'll always just corrode again if not looked after. Spoke sets are cheap enough on Ebay etc. And no matter what you need...it'll turn up if you're patient.

Bit of both mate. New parts where avail. Decided to paint the S/A black. Originally had it polished, but the condition of it isn't good enough. So will go with the black look of the earlier factory bikes. Think I'll go with black rims too. But no...it's being built as my race bike...not a show bike.

lol. Sick fucker! And nah. It's all technique mate. Tell ya what IS hard to start...a left side kickstart CR480. The mistake most people make with big two strokes is giving them a half arsed kick. But if you get 'em to, or close to TDC, them jump on the kick start lever with everything you've got, they fire up quite easily. Best to shift 'em into neutral too, as the lil bit of xtra drag from the clutch makes things harder than they need be.

MIXONE
29th June 2013, 15:39
My left hand kick T500 was easy enough but when you weigh 65kg dripping wet even giving the PE everything I had saw me kicked back off the seat and onto the road more then once.I didn't learn the TDC trick until I started riding old triumphs.

Ha not to awesome when you get a close look, but the cranks rebuilt and the top-end is sorted, but that's the easy bit.
The tank is leaking and the plastics are toast so that and a re-spray are next.It won't be a full recon more of a tidy up and get out and ride it build.

Hahahaha. That's part of the problem/hold up mate. Got the 1984 KX125 on the go too. It was my first ever bike I raced...so lots of fond memories of it. Making head way with the SR covers. Looks like Daryl Lane (used to be our top mechanic) may be able to sort them out. He now works for Peter Jackson in their machine room.
All going well I'll end up with 85-90% of an SR250 as well. So will build the KX125 as close to a Jeff Ward SR125 rep as I poss can so as to have the whole family as it were. Here's the start of the 125...and a pic of Wardy's SR I plan to make it look like!290475290476290477290478290479290480

Lol. Hate to tell ya this mate...but those Fox Factory Shox and Forx are period correct items. I know this...as I was there *at the time*. And the black swingarm was period correct on the works bikes. The rims are purely my preference. But it's a race bike...not meant to be a show bike made back to original std condition. I didn't know what to expect when I first walked into his workshop, and possibly wouldn't have had him undercut the gearbox on the RF if I hadn't been told he was so good. The random stuff stacked to the ceiling would be great fun to rifle through over a week, just to see what's in there.

It doesn't look good for old KTM's race this weekend got major dramas with the rear linkage it's cracking the alloy/dog bones and the steel linkage arm is flogged out , have broken 2 dog bone links and don't have any more spares if I break whats on it.
Good news there are new parts in Austria , bad news the costs and delivery time frame . Gonna be a little wait before all together again.

That's the only good thing Crasher, the parts are there not at KTM but a supplier who caters for older KTM's and VMX bikes know the cost dog bones 28 euros , 2x bearings for dog bones 60 euros each [glad mine can be reused], steel link 73 euros plus freight.
My brothers been trying to get me to bring it back to factory fresh/new I ain't got the budget for that , God knows how u do it.

A steel linkage on an '84 mx'er, a bit behind the times.

ktm84mxc
16th March 2014, 06:56
KTM ran the steel link from 82-84 then swapped the design to a pro-link copy from 85, Kawa's Uni-Track used a steel bell crank/lever from 81-85 then switched to the under swing arm of 86.
As I've found out steel can handle stress way more then alloy, alloy just breaks/shears apart. I've ordered the new bits will take 3 weeks all up $200.

Crasher will put some more pxts up when she's all back together.
The VMX at Ardmore was good watching and I gave a hand to help as you do, track conditions were a challenge[see climitepxt] but those that rose to the challenge had a good time overall.
Meet a few ex-riders I haven't seen in decades etc, will discuss with John Cobb [Ardmore organiser/president] about including a VMX class for 2-3 rounds in our Wildman series and just run twin shock and evo/single shock classes. As there's a lack of racing for evo bikes up this way and gives me a reason to ride my 84.

She's looking good there Pete , will it be ready for Taupo ?
Looking at getting new plastics for my 84 guards, headlight and radiator covers 190 euros delivered from Austria, just got to convince the bank manager/wife it's a sound investment.

And here it is Bro...finally finished. Still lots of loose ends to tidy up (the jetting is miles out, but I've simply run out of time obviously), so whilst I really shouldn't try and race it tomorrow...I'm fucking going to! Been waiting too long and come too far not to. Glad I went with the 40mm carb though. Even though it needs work...when it comes right...the thing is a fucking jet. Feels healthier than my YZ465H, and dare I say it...going close to KX500 teritory. See you tomorrow at the Johnny Olds. Oh...and if you get this in time and have a spare NGK B8EGV...could you bring one I can buy off you?
