i think the red zoners in chch who are having their shit disconnected have an ideal opportunity to start an eco commune, off grid, seperate nation state,
'fter all, if the council/govt wont provide service, they cant claim contractual authority

Which is probably why the authorities are at such pains to keep people out.

If you were a Christchurch rate payer, would you be happy paying to maintain services for these people?

Yes, we need a special commune for the "undesirable" members of society. We've got a couple already.

One is called Otara, another is called Cannons creek. Another could be Waikanai, or Otaki, but for different reasons.

I think if they want to stay, let them stay, discount their rates bill for the services they are not being provided with.

If you look at the maps and add a bit of local knowledge, it doesn't take long to figure out that services to red zoned properties in many cases will have to be maintained, because they pass through red zoned areas to get to green zoned areas.

Just because someone has declined to accept an arbitary land zoning decision, and happen to be in the way of the sites for Gerry's personal pie factory and Bob's lizard people incubation centre, doesn't mean they should be denied essential services.

I have to wonder how they dreamed up the 50 million figure to maintain the services, if such a small part of the city costs that much then how is it that they can afford to reseal the roads in fendalton every 6 months whether they need it or not?

Haven't been down there for a while then? Was in the paper the other day that the regulars have moved back in to their normal haunts, much to the relief of those living further north on Manchester street, who no longer have to clean up the mess from their front yards in the morning.

yeah, sure. you forget that the state controls pretty much every aspect of life, plus tthere are other interested players like insurance companies and banks and all that. also the land is unsuitable for building and it is covered in broken houses and it is the middle of a pretty harsh winter so far. So yeah, next bright idea? Like all utopian ideas, yours is fatally flawed.

On the one hand, given that the authorities have red zoned the area, it would be unfair to charge them rates.
So if they want to stay there (on land that has been declared unfit for housing), it would be silly of them to expect that services would continue to be provided.

Why would you want help from that idiot, by the way?
Unlike him, you do occasionally make sense.

that still doesn't answer the question.
fact: they HAVE been paying rates.
SO, why should they not be receiving the 'services' that paying rates "entitles people to"?

asides from anything, my whole point in this thread was that they should tell the council to gtfo and be all hippy commune.

and f*ck the council, if i decide i want to live in an earthquaked house, who are they to tell me to move?
if they decide tomorrow that you're too gay to live, are you going to walk to the camps or pay for the bullet yourself?
or piss and moan about it?

(one of) your fundamental problem( s) is that you have faith in authority.

No, we need more of them here.

no one needs any of them.

except my mate ballas. he can stay. the rest can gtfo.

I have faith in common sense, and living in an EQ damaged house in an area that has been determined to be unsustainable, is not common sense.
Expecting your fellow ratepayers to maintain that area, when only a fraction of the people that previously lived there remain is not common sense.

As for pissing and/or moaning, no. I would leave that to the green fonted whingers of the world.
If it affected me personally, I would act.

You keep trying to send me away.
You're a bit of a bully, ain't you.

Notwithstanding that, why should the whole city pay to maintain an area beyond saving?
Fix all the services in the red zone, and the next earthquake wrecks it.
Literally good money after bad.
No houses should have been built there in the first place, moron.

Yet they'll pay to roll out broadband service to the far corners of the country because the telecoms industry doesn't want to? or put in irrigation schemes because businesses can't be arsed paying for those services themselves? Both at my expense where I am not in a far corner of the country and I don't benefit from irrigation schemes. Good money after bad indeed.
Would you say that about Wellington too? Perhaps the Wairarapa? Hawkes Bay? christ there'd be nowhere to live in NZ if we were worried about where was safe and what condition the land was in.

Choices were given by Govt and insurers. All parties could have moved on. Fact is most have. If you were not insured ................. well .....

Red Zone was so 2011 ............

It is all about waiting for repairs/rebuilds and trying to find a rental to live in once your time comes up to repair/rebuild now. This will be CHCH for the next 3.5 years.
