This followed me home the other night. Bit of a change from hauling Adv. bikes on work trips but who can guess make & model? (& yes, it was made by a motorcycle company).
It's on my 'bucket list' to do the vintage car Irishman Rally, which often includes the Dusty Butt route but in winter. So looking for some aggressive 350 / 400 x 19" adv. bike tyres but with less rounded profile. Any suggestions?

I'd say it was a BSA. Ralph Watson had one for years, ended up the motor was entirely his own and has rotary valve heads.

What about tyres, Motu?

It's not concourse but that's just as well considering where I will be taking it. E.g. in the past the Irishman Rally has included Carricktown Track, Serpentine Loop, Nevis Crossing & Dunstan Trail, all in winter! Hence my question about bike tyres that might fit.

Good on ya Struan. A few years ago there were a bunch of these staying out here at Waitata, a hard case bunch of cars and an even harder case bunch of people, they were all covered in mud and fixing broken things with bits of wire.
Sounds like a worthy adventure, I'm envious !

Does that rally occur Queens Birthday weekend? While returning from Brass Monkey we met a bunch of old cars coming through Burkes pass or thereabouts. The crews looked like they were having lot of fun and the cars were not being spared.

XF650

Yip, that would be them. They sometimes overnight at Naseby before going out Dansey's, over Blackforest and then to Fairlie via either McKenzie or Burkes.
When Aslan & I where riding to Brass Monkey back in 2009 we met a couple of them at the Dansey's pub. By amazing coincidence one (a Model A Ute) was from our old family farm, the very vehicle that I had learnt to drive in. The owner insisted I take it for a spin up the Pass, which was really cool & brought back great memories.

15 vintage cars did the run & TimG was my crew for the weekend. Mostly fairly easy although the loop through Mt Potts had a couple of knarley bits. The wee 1928 Singer went well (smallest car but great power to weight ratio), although the spindly chassis & wooden frame got a terrible work-out.

Compulsory pic at Mt Sunday. Can't believe that they still do 4WD bus tours to this Lord of the Rings site.

The route is quite easy for Adv bikes & all within a days ride / return of ChCh. Or stay at Mt Potts with digs starting at $28 for swish cabins and good tucker on site. Plus Erewhon is always worth a visit, especially if your into horsepower.

Those pesky Austin 7's usually dominate Vintage Trials (they are amazing) and yes, the sport is quite strong in Nelson / Marlborough.
My Singer was restored in 1994 with really only the road in mind, especially as it's much rarer than the Seven's.

Bought new in 1911 by Mr Cook (Cooks Corner in Riwaka) for around $1200. A Model T at the time was less than $200.

Well the rolling chassis with a heap of parts including a spare crown wheel & pinion arrived at Easter. While crown wheel dimensions & ratios are the same, discovered it's not compatible with my pinion drive bugger it (different prop shafts between 1928 & 1929). I'm rapidly learning that my 1928 chassis is less common so it looks like best solution is to transfer my body to the more common and better suspended 1929 Chassis, especially as it's still registered as a Porlock. Also looking if it's possible to jam the 29 rear axle into the 28 chassis, but with the different spring set-ups I'm sure there will be a catch.

While it's been mechanically restored at great expense, for various reasons the owner can't finish making it into a Roadster. He was talking of selling bits here & there so I just had to save it. Anyway I have brought it home with intention of making it into some sort of rough Special, for vintage paddock trials etc. (it's even got 5 brand new Mitas m/bike tyres already fitted).
I have very limited restoration skills so will just stick with being a Singer Slut.

There are also specific marque Clubs that are the best source of info & advice. But if you're thinking of getting into this stuff, don't leave it too late.

It's my dad's 1920 essex, ideal machine for the Irishman rally. I've done a few over the years, always good fun and was thinking the other day I might have to check on the state of the machinery and head down for another look this year.

Once I've finished with my GT Cortina (well, I need to start first) I really should do something with the '27 essex coupe that's still sitting in the shed at dads place that's been waiting for attention from me for about 20 years.

Even though this clashed with Brass Monkey, the Irishman Rally was something I just had to have a crack at. 150 vintage cars (pre 1931) converged on Fairlie for the 60th Anniversary of this unique event. Rogson crewed as the 'stick man', which I had better explain who's job it is to hold shifter in gear on the steep bits. He was great company even though he wore his trou outside his red-bands.
The record number of entrants meant the organisers bypassed the real knarly stuff, simply to avoid bottle necks. However the route still stuck to gravel & farm tracks and the first day included some Dusty Butt stuff e.g. back roads around Fairlie, Back-line Rd, Myers Pass, Haka Pass, McKenzie Pass etc., all stuff I've ridden many times before on the bikes but seeing it now in a different way. The wee Porlock was fair "singing", especially after I changed the plugs. And that's the twist - my Singer Junior spark plugs cross code with the Suzuki TF125 Mud Bug farm bike, which proves the Japanese are still copying British engineering. I overtook a few cars with 3 x the cc of mine, not counting the many we saw with their bonnets up.

XF650
6th June 2014, 23:21
Day 2 started in Tekapo, after a bloody cold / frosty drive from Fairlie, but being adventure riders we kept the hood down. A few cars overheated from frozen radiators, even though they had drained them over-night. It was obvious my diff seals were shot, so had well lubricated brakes from then on. The route took us via an Irishman Creek tour (where the Rally first started from 60 years ago & hence the name), a loop through Braemar Station tracks and then on up to Mt Cook Station. In the lee of the Mountain they set up a paddock speed slalom, where I was fourth fastest after one run but called it quits to avoid breaking an axle. However the damage was already done, when shortly afterwards the (canvas) diff drive disintegrated, requiring a tow. So technically a DNF but I still won a prize for the only Singer.

1st pic shows Tekapo frost & how small my Porlock is in comparison (5th from left). The moderns were the sweeps.

Cool stuff Struan, so did any of the group do the Porika? But more importantly did anyone find my sidecover and, if so who do I send the prize to.:first:

Sorry Nigel, it was a bit wet & everyone chickened out. We need everything in our favour to get the old cars down.
Hope to do it as a loop with Rainbow, next trip.

excellent stuff Struan - instead of 'My Senior Moment' - I reckon you could have aptly named this thread "I succumbed to temptation - and look what fun I'm having!"

Sorry I hadn't been following your exploits more closely as I spend most time over on ADV

Like Jeff C - I'm envious - long may you and your Singer/s run! Cheers Stephen O :niceone:

A chap asked me for advice on what to do with some old cars & stuff that came with a section & building he had purchased. You can imagine my reaction first time I opened the door & just knew we had to film the contents before they were messed with. It's a privilege to be involved with this:

obviously there's some good 'sections' (or blocks) to be had with all those goodies lurking inside, if you're lucky - I imagine you must've thought you'd died and gone to heaven Struan :)

I see a lot of old stuff tucked away in sheds on my farm visits but never as much as this in one spot, especially with all the parts. That dust is actually quite valuable, proving they haven't been disturbed for decades.
Initially was going to dispose of the collection myself but realised I would struggle to do it justice on my own, so have now involved the Vintage Car Club who will run the Auction.
Amazingly all the cars were on blocks & bores oiled, so everything turns. We have since moved the cars to more secure storage & now sorting the parts. Regretfully no m/bike parts (yet) but did find some Singer bits!

Wish I had the time and skills to tackle a 'project' like one of those.

Evidently some of the cars were driven into the shed, so wouldn't take much to make usable.
Most interest so far is in the oldest (1934 Vauxhall ASX) & the newest (1947 Rover Sports).

Great find Struan. I cringed when someone wiped the windscreen tho...
Are they valuable? Are there many collectors for these kind of cars?

We have no real idea of values, hence auction with real low reserves. The owner accepts it's just what someone is prepared to pay on the day so advertising is going to be important, including overseas.
I suspect most interest will be from the various marque Club members. And yes - there is even a Ford 10 Club.

Actually there is something in the shed that would suit you - a stack of old gramophone records:laugh:

Keep an eye out for a 66-75 Ford Bronco. It's my next car after lotto win.

From the video it looked very much like that, what I always wonder is why.....

Most of them look to be pretty good nick, and great examples as found original condition cars, that could keep their character and be driven as is.

Very nice find.

Yes, it's very tempting to throw in a battery & some fresh fuel and take a couple for a spin, especially the Rover Sports. However have decided they are best kept "as is, where is".
We aren't going to groom them for the auction - just blew some of the dust off each car, to show how good the panel & paint is. But I'm not sure that was the right decision either.
Amazingly you can still smell the lovely leather upholstery in some of them.

The 1947 Rover 16 HP Sports Saloon from the Barn Find collection will be on display at the Ashburton VCC Swap Meet, Saturday 2nd May 2015.
The question is: do I clean it or just leave it as is i.e. true Barn Find?

Looks pretty bloody good as it is, I'd buy it looking like that. Would make for an awesome before and after photo, not that it looks to need much work anyway.

Leave as is. Someone will love to buy it looking like that as it has the authentic 'barn find' look. You can see shiny clean cars everywhere - that one looks like a time capsule

The Barn Find Auction went bloody well. Everything sold & far exceeded our reserve's.
I have posted prices achieved here: http://www.slipstreamcs.co.nz/vccbb/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=969&p=1434#p1434
