Surely there must be some kind of exercising I can do to make this unfit fatty a little more dirt bike fit? Google shows nothing, not that I could find anyway. Any kind of exercise in particular that could help?

Seat time. Get out to a track and try do 20 minutes of riding on your limit. Its hard to strengthen forearms to combat arm pump. If you want to get fitter through the week to help then just general fitness like exercycle, cross trainer and weight training.

A track? It's hard to get seat time as I only really have every 2nd weekend free. Hmm anything I could do that doesn't involve machinery I don't have? Don't wanna join the gym either lol.

Press ups, pull ups and squats will work your main muscle groups you will need for riding. And for fitness, just running or cycling will be fine.
Set up a program where you alternate different muscle groups to different days. So pull ups (and if you get weights curls) monday. Then push ups and dips Tuesday. Rest wednesday then squats on Thursday. Start the cycle again. If you want to be fit fast then run every day. If not then a couple of times a week.

I found a wobble-board useful. It's just a 1ft square piece of ply with a lump in the middle, you can stand on it watching TV, surprising how much effort it takes to keep it level. Works the gastric nemius (calf) muscles and obviously tunes up the balance.

Great advice thanks guys. Crikey I haven't run for fitness for easily 2 years now, will be hard to get back into it! Will have to Google what dips are! Sounds familiar.... I usually wait till night to go running so less ppl see how rubbish i am lol

They have some programmes here
http://www.racerxvt.com/
Currently doing the weekend warrior 1 training programme.
Cardio and a bit of strength training.
You might as well join up, and then cancel, as the first month is free, but you can get a good idea of how the program works, all the excercises and strecthing routines, and base it off that going forward.
I try for running 3-4 times a week, two strength training sessions, and one day on the bike a week which is around an hour or so at the moto-x track.

Forearm pump. Place hands in front, arms straight at shoulder height and close and open your hands 200 times. You should flick your hands out to open as you really want to work your extensors rather than trying to close a really tight fist and be unable to open your hands. You can use a weight on a rope through a broom handle and roll your wrists to wind the weight up and down the rope too to add extra strength to wrists and stabilise shoulders.
Other good general exercise to make you sweat and out of puff. Burpees, or cat stretches.

We do that as part of the warm up at the judo club :bleh: There's a cool shoulder exercise in a similar vein that starts off easy but after 10 reps of 10 movements people start to groan.

I've been going to the gym 4-5 days a week for the past 3 months. I doa mix of Upper body, cardio, lower body, then cardio. I've found my riding has gotten so much better just being fitter in general. I can ride twice as long on th eMX track now. Helps that I dropped around 5kg too.
Fitness is fitness though, go for a push bike ride or a run. Everything helps. The gym works for me, but enjoy going.

flyingcr is correct, nothing beats seat time for bike fitness, but cheese is also correct, if you're not fit in the first place, you won't get the benefit from the seat time. I ride every 3-4 weeks, so there's no way that will make me fit, bike or otherwise, so I run 5ks twice a week and do bootcamp 3 times a week. Diet also helps, lots of protein and small quantities of good carbs, try and stay away from the junk food.
The fitter I am, the faster I ride.

Dont stress about it. The green track is great. And only noobs/young riders are allowed on it. If fast riders get on it they are kicked off.
It was my first trail ride and it got me hooked. There is no pressure. The green is about 8ks long. If you get more confident then the yellow is the next step up.

Stamina & strength in your torso & legs is what your after for a fun day in the saddle without being knackered at lunch time. Arm pump is for hard core riding, constant bang bang bang. Never been hard core, never had arm pump.
Somebody mentioned Judo. That would do it, you end up harder than a blacksmiths anvil.
But I'm past it for Judo now, did my stint, so I would suggest going old school, sit ups, press ups, squats, duck walking, bunny hops, burpees etc. Get you bum cheeks, thighs & stomach muscles working & they will support you all day long. Riding off road, standing up, you need that strength to be agile on the bike. You need stamina too, running & swimming give you duration, make your heart & lungs feed those big muscle groups.
Somebody mentioned breathing. Stamina training will give you a rhythm, steady, effective breathing. When you work out exhale right from the bottom of your lungs & inhale from the bottom up, your stomach should swell if you do it properly. Most of the time even gym bunnies only use a fraction of their lung capacity, breathing shallow & just using the top part of the lungs. You end up panting quickly & have early oxygen debt. Air is like petrol for peoples.
Carbs will give you energy but for you to be efficient your body needs to work well, plenty of vitamins & minerals from fresh fruit & veggies will allow your body to maximise carb & protein energy release.
I use a juicer for my vits & mins. Apples, beetroot, celery, carrots, oranges, kiwis (the fruit) etc. Fire em in & gulp it down. Knocks the socks of Red Bull, all day...

Ta, I keep thinking I should get some but never get around to it (they do work well, so I am told), I'm usually ok with callus build up on my palms but having not ridden for a wee while it showed! Meths on the popped blister works well for getting the callus started if you feel like some self abuse....
Boss lady, use the Sandpit, it's winter, the sand is hard / compacted and easy riding (relatively) and pick the easy trails to potter around on, there's plenty to pick from, take your time and enjoy chasing the cows and deer! The best training you can do now is seat (standing) time and practising the basic skills but at your own pace.

MTB is the best. Cardio, core strength, bike balance, vision........ the list goes on.
$7 a day up at Woodhill MTB park and you can even hire a bike if you don't have one.
we normally do a 2hr ride every Sat or Sun depending on what other plans are on.
Not everyone does every week but there is someone around keen for a ride.

No ifs about it here fella, I am sure the shearers would let me know if I wasn't keeping up. I only do the sheds for thE $$$$ now, used to enjoy it, and no tramps have made some sheds easier, but it is a young fellas game. Thats why most pressers go shearing, because it is not as much hard work.
But I can out work most of the 20 something year old young chaps that are in our gangs. 2 days in the shed is a whole week of driving a truck, wages wise.:devil2::devil2:

They have some programmes here
http://www.racerxvt.com/
Currently doing the weekend warrior 1 training programme.
Cardio and a bit of strength training.
You might as well join up, and then cancel, as the first month is free, but you can get a good idea of how the program works, all the excercises and strecthing routines, and base it off that going forward.
I try for running 3-4 times a week, two strength training sessions, and one day on the bike a week which is around an hour or so at the moto-x track.
update on how you're going with this programme?

Was going really well, enjoyable almost once you get into the swing of it. But had a bit of a setback with the bugs doing the rounds at the moment, so been off for two weeks with flu and a few other bugs, back into it today.
Definitely noticed an increase in riding fitness/strength, can ride harder, with more aggression for longer periods, so pretty happy with it overall.
I think its perfect for my level of riding and what I want to achieve, as well as a good overall exercise programme as well. Only place I probably really let myself down now is what I eat/drink.

The best exercise routine is the one you actually do. Have you checked out the weekend warrior program that was posted? Did it require weights, or a gym, or was it something you can do in your lounge with no equipment?
Getting the right app has always been the best place to start. Make sure you check plenty of them out before you begin to exercise. Katie Sandwina credited having the right app for her awesome fitness.

Cheers will check that out.
You do a weights training style programme which you can either do at gym, or they also have an alternative which uses a suspension type trainer which you can do at home, just hook it into a door frame and you use body weight. Thats what I went for as its easy and means you can do it all from home, and if you leave it setup if possible, i find it helps to motivate me to do it.

I take it you're joking. The app has nothing to do with fitness, or this thread for that matter, is meant to help you monitor what you're eating, calorie intake etc. ain't nothing wrong with watching what ya eat

Then shouldn't the title of this thread be "put down that fried chicken lard arse, you have a dirt ride in the morning" ?
Best one I ever did was "body for life challenge" it works due to the fact it looks at the whole thing, food/exercise/life style.
You can't do one without the other.

Clearly not, because she didn't have the app when she started the thread, so therefore couldn't be reasonably expected to know that chicken frying and subsequent eating might lead to lardish arseness.
Myfitness pal is another good one you might try. There are good ones for the blood type diet, the paleo diet, FODMAP and weight watchers too. Temple run could be considered inspirational.
Better stop there before we end up with an angry bird.
