For what it worth,
I purchased a new KLX650,(not the R model) in 96, and enjoyed it as a big road going chook chaser that wasn't afraid of single track.
The seat is hard, it's a big bike, (but not too heavy), and loves wheelstands.
Never had any mechanical issues, but I owned it for only 20,000km.
Hope that helps.

The very early ones had some over heating issues and were hard on cam chains and tensioners. But a monster of an engine!

Hope you're tall!
Long travel suspension, and a kickstart longer than state highway 1...

Don't think the x had a leccy leg ever.

Good bike off-road though. More focused than a dr650, and cheaper than an xr650. Good combo, but I wouldn't want to do much distance on the road on one...

great bike if its been looked after, not sure how accessible parts are now.
check the oil for water and water for oil and leaks, plus all the usual noises- timing chain/bearings etc
kinda kawasaki's match for the XR6 except water cooled, my biggest worry would be getting parts where as the XR parts are plenty so even if its a bit run down its not a hassle to rebuild.
i looked at one but decided on the air cooled xr :Punk:

Cheers Guys, I've ended up buying the bike, it needs a couple of small things done but for the price I couldn't turn it down, have already ordered all the parts so will fit them up next weekend then bring on the adventure riding :headbang:

I think the air cleaner assy has some screws on the inside that came loose on some bikes, and lunched valves etc.
Never happened to me, but worthwhile to give it (the air intake) a good check over,
Did I say the seat was hard:spanking:
Also, if it sits about for a few weeks, drain the carb bowl for a fast fire up, its a big slug.

This guy has an opinion on KLR's. Brief but blunt.

Back in the day, up over, a mate had a KLX which he rode in the Cheviot hills of Northern England. Steep, very steep. Nothing stopped it, it would trench it's way up anything. He was munted by 12pm, though.

thats a bloody tidy one, although his buy now seems a bit spendy...you could get a ten years newer dr650 for that
although ill admit theyre rather different machines, the klx more like a brp to own!

dino3310

yep, and i guess it did a good job, being a bit more techie and modern than the xr600 back in
'93 but reckon the 650r would boot its arse..klx never won baja!
still want one tho ;)

dino3310
16th July 2013, 19:40
make ya wonder why, water cooled and bigger cubes, all the goodies but never got as popular:confused:

i think the 650R would boot most arses:not:
edit (meaning the BRP)

wicked simple eh! ive owned a 600 and a 650r
and i want another 600! hard to believe but theyre gettin rare in original form

dino3310
16th July 2013, 19:56
not as rare as the KLX but, one of there problems besides not making them anymore is there so easy to mod up and every buggas doing it, would love to have a 100% stocker.

Hey Dave dont forget to post up some picks of the ole girl in action...(the bike that is)

16th July 2013, 20:41
stock or near stock is what id want, i had a high comp one years ago and it was a bit of a bitch in a few
different ways . having said that, pipe and carb improvements plus big tank etc would be nescessary ;)
p.s we should be discussing this in the brp pages lol

dino3310
16th July 2013, 20:53
yeah i always seem to sway a thread towards the XR:facepalm:

i'll try and post some pics this weekend, just waiting for my big tank to arrive, the only changes i've made so far have been new bars, fitted a set of Barkbuster storm handguards and fitted a 2013 KX450F front guard, still a few changes to make but good things take time.

dino3310
16th July 2013, 22:33
i reckon thats the best bit.... adding/changing bit and bobs to suit besides the riding off course, im still making little changes to the XR, i never seem to get it just right....
i suppose if a bike was perfect it would be boring... Go the Bling:banana:
