And once the cheap training ammo was sorted they are reliable as clockwork, easy to use and compact. And not bad accuracy for the intended purpose - better than the Model 7 was.

AK47? You're dreaming. Its called AK47 because thats when it was designed. Sure it is cheap as chips to manufacture, reliable as anything and all that but it is inaccurate compared to modern weapons, and has some issues around barrel rise that modern weapons don't have. Plus the ammunition is large and heavy and due to that you have limited mag size.
Plus it has old style "long gun" architecture.
We like modern guns: I present to you the FN P90: 50 round mag at 5.56 x 23 mm is enough to fuck you and your friends up, light, short but long enough barrel and tested to be accurate out to 600m IIRC.

them the ones with the bullets stacked vertically in the mag eh? and it slide on top of the barrel? (wiki=google= jews= not on my PC)
i'd rather have an AUG if i wanted a bullpup (plus they';re very modular, swap out for a heavy barrel for snipey snipey or put the .223 action in for CQ). tbh i' rather have a dragunov than an AK but AKs are a lot of fun.

Designer Mikhail Kalishnikov 1947 ... A for Avtomat (automatic)
The Israeli army identified the AK47 s one of the best light infrantry weapons - but went to a Finnish development of that weapon - apparently gave it to their troops and said 'how can we improve this?" - as well as having tropps use a variety of other weapons ...

AK?
Noisy-as safety when operated by one hand
Mag makes it hard to 'snuggle down' when prone or behind some cover
Complicated to fit a scope
Target recovery time between shots not so quick
30 round mag awkward to carry (as extra/spare compared with M15
Don't get me wrong, a fine battle rifle with not too bad a useful range considering the slug-gun style sights, reliable-as, easy to field-strip etc etc. but not what suits most law enforcement groups.

Yes - that's exactly right .. and there's no need to fit a scope .. the distance accuracy is not high enough to justify one .. just point and hold the trigger .. remembering that it climbs ... from memory it climbs from right to left ...
It's a great assult rifle ... that will keep firing under the worst conditions (sand, water etc ) ... but not a modern police weapon ...

Read about Aramoana and you'll know why the AK isn't that great. It's rubbish accuracy/range meant that once the ATS arrived with mere MP5s they easily outclassed him.
Admittedly they were trained in the use of their weapons and he was not as such, but it was reported that all the ATS had to do was stand far enough back that his weapon was not accurate enough to be a threat, and shoot back accurately.

Yes - that would be pretty true ... if you want longer range accuracy then the AK is not the best choice .. however while you are trying to get a long range one shot in with whatever the ATS currently use, the AK is spraying bullets at you - with a kill potential well further than it's accuracy potential - good chance that one of them will hit home ... you have to stick your head up to look at the target - and bullets would be zipping by all around you - and maybe into you ... that's the difference between an automatic firing gun and a trigger pull firing gun ..
Ah, wrong, I think you need to research more, for a start Gray was not flash in the eye-sight department - like really bad.

The MP5s the ATS had were fully automatic. As are the AUGs the DF currently have, and they are much better than an AK. Very easy to break down and clean too. And fun to shoot.

LOL at some of the replies in this thread. Lack of firearms knowledge is very apparent with some of you.
The AUG is gas operated and is due for replacement in 2015. I personally don't like the trigger on it, its plastic and needs to be pulled back slightly harder in Automatic mode to get it fire more than 1 round. Its arse to clean, I know guys that have washed theirs out in the showers to assist in getting all the mud out. It takes atleast and hour to get it up to a high quality standard depending on how dirty it is and how many rounds have been fired through it. It won't jam up if its clean, I have done 5 full mags on full auto and it never skipped a beat. Its a childs weapon, anyone can pick it up and shoot reasonably well.
The AK uses a 7.62x39 and obviously has less range but in my opinion it is a far superior weapon even for its age. Can field strip the cunt in like 5 seconds and it will fire after being submerged in almost anything. The 7.62 has more penetrating power so it can shoot through concrete block walls and it costs like 40c a round.
MP5 is for special forces and has the advantage of using the same 9mm ammunition as a handgun. Therefore you only need to carry one type of ammo instead of 2.
As for the stolen firearms. The barrels will be sawn off most probably and used by one of NZ's many gangs. Aint no science in that haha

But there's a few variants out there so I guess there's a 7.62X54 out there...

You are all just dribbling all over Mrs Hand and her five daughters. So very few of you own the guns you claim to know about.
And of those who do own guns, there are only two or three of you in this thread (you know who you are) that we have any concerns about.

Hope you're a vegetarian I'm sure you're right, but I'm happy to let professionals kill my food for me now.
Guy was quite impressed with my accuracy, free standing like, but guns just aren't for me...Although I did wanna have a crack with the bigger gun at targets.

I'm with Drew: I'm a consumer. I pay people to do the yukky jobs so I can have delicious delicious meat that I dont have to think about it being part of a live cute piggy or sheepy or beefy. Or ducky or goosy or chooky or whatever. I just point at it in the butchers and go: yum yum

Yeah .. well .. before I moved three years ago I had a small farm - feed sheep, chickens, ducks ... poured minimal drench down their throats ... used bugger all dip .. ate them all ...
So yeah .. I knew what was in my meat ('cept for the wild stuff ...)

I have shot many animals in the past, but I find myself more and more just enjoying seeing animals in the wild. I think I may be turning into a softcock myself. And before some of you comedians chime in, me and viagra do not mix.:devil2: I have no trouble with fishing or spearing flounder though. I killed a couple of sheep a few weeks ago and did not enjoy it at all, but damn they tasted good. Tis a funny old world, STUPID HUMANS.

Yeah, I sort of had that attitude too for awhile, didn't really give a fuck about anything. I went out with some guys once and there was a mob of fallow in a gully and they just opened up and started shooting everything, even though we could not carry it all out. really fucked me off, and I have never been out with them since. I still use snares for rabbits but not being allowed firearms is a bit tricky for getting anything bigger. I have tried hunting bows, but it is way to expensive for my liking, cheaper to buy the meat. I have tried a love trap before, with mixed results. I can get a kick out of sneaking up on a deer and yelling BOO, but that wont feed me.:Punk::Punk:

I still have hunting bows ... but I'm too old and broken to be that energetic ...
I do appreciate the wildlife and animals ... I also enjoy eating ... so I try to make sure I'm involved in the whole process as much as possible ...

Interesting. Any proposed replacements yet? Saying it is being replaced in '15 is like the Endeavour being replaced...
I was around when the introduction of the AUG happened and the list of faults was quite substantial. A plastic piece of crap. It can be very accurate when in the right hands and if it is maintained well - not just cleaned.

take up airgunning, it's cheap as shit and just as fun as fullbore, except without the "phunk" noise target loads make in heavy guns.
If you learn to shoot better - you get one-shot instant kills
and if you're really good, a 360 no-scope.
in related news, if you don't eat meat you're probably food. and it's the direct-feed-back-ness that's lacking from society that has lead to such glut. ie, hey do not see the energy cost of their cars (wheras horses shat on you and stood outside the pub, so you got to see the input and output) sames with meat, the wholesale enslavement and slaughter of a species (behind closed doors, out of sight out of mind) means people do not understand the cost of their foodening and have very little respect for it.
