Yeah, spend more. Anything in that price range will be fooked and you'll be throwing your money away.

Depends on what you want, and what you want it for and how cool you want to look while doing it. I got an XL250 8 yrs ago and had 8 years of real good fun out of it before one of my mates boys took it for a ride up the road and held it in first gear until it shat itself. Bought it for $50 and it has been a lot of places that should of killed it, like the landsbourgh valley.:Punk::Punk: My DR cost me $0 and had heaps of fun on that and still going........My Ag cost me a load of firewood and has been over coal hill that many times in the last 15 years, that it could do it itself now. But then I dont care about image, I just like getting dirty.:Punk::Punk:

Yep I just want it for paddock bashing around really. Doesn't have to look pretty at all. Or road worthy. So in that case... I could find something for under a grand?

Maybe an older dual purpose bike if you're well lucky. But it'll prob cost you more in the long term than saving for longer and spending more in the first place.

Easily. Look on trademe, or go to your local bike shops and ask if they have any old dirt bikes that are going cheap. One of our local shops has a xr 250 for $800, pretty rough but everything works. My nephew just got an old Ct 125 for $200 that just needs chain and sprockets. They are out there, if you are at all mechanical, or know someone who is, or if you are willing and able to learn the basics yourself then an old bike would be ok to get for now until you decide wether it is your thing or not.:niceone:

For that price and what you want I would of said yes, side cover would be easy enough to find.

That thing is an odd repower...
Yes you can get a cheap paddock basher for under a grand, but I struggle to see the point. I grew up on old, knackered bikes and I'm glad those days are over. Riding flogged out, heavy bikes with shit suspension and brakes and questionable reliability misses out on so much of the fun of riding off road.
Double the budget and get a 125 MX bike, this one would probably end up that sort of cash.

Only my opinion of course. But I find 125 full house moto-x bikes are a bit full on as a first dirt bike. Too frantic.

I have to agree, I have been on a couple of later model 85cc bikes and byjeysus they got some poke for the size of them. Bloody good fun for a big boy though.:devil2:

Firstly good work on investigating off roading, There's a roady or two I know won't dare venture into this uncharted land. I got to go to an MX/enduro track last weekend with some roadies who were just getting into off roading and they loved it.
If you're just planning on doing trail rides then XR/DR/TT/DT/KDX/KLX should be fine and often the only difference between the older ones and the newer ones is age i.e. I think the XR 200 motor barely changed between 88 and 02 and a few of the other models had similar update cycles.
The great news is parts are easy to procure for a wide range of models and the bikes are much simpler to work on than 98% of road bikes

The first XR200 appeared in 1980 a twin shocker, the motor can trace it's lineage back to the SL/XL125 mid 70's, avoid the RFVC twin carb models 84/85 yrs.
The motor can be found in the CRF230 to this day now with an electric leg.

couple potentially good options out tere.
my experience with dirt bike is that you can either spend 2-3k, and have a reliable, but not particularly fancy bike, OR you can spend a lot less, but end up spending the difference in repairs and parts over the next 12 months anyway.
If need be, save a little longer and get something that wont spend half its life sitting in a shed waiting for parts

Agreed. My old XR200 was great but always needed something done. My KDX just sits there waiting for the next ride. It doesnt break down and only needs oil changes and cleaning.

You can't go wrong with this , a bit more than a grand but you will get your money back later if you decide to sell or upgrade. Plus it's reasonably close to you.

Awwww that ones sold :( is a pretty colour though.... But it's only 80cc I reckon I'd get bored pretty quick.
But for $500 it would have been a deal!

Yea you're right there. No point getting anything smaller than a 125 four stroke.
Look for an old xr200 or similar. Ride it til the exhaust falls off. Then No. 8 wire it up and keep riding it.
Get a four stroke. Easier to ride and more forgiving. I'd suggest a small trail bike rather than a farm bike
