I was lucky as a kid living right on the Mataura River a stone throw from our backyard. After school time was spent fishing with mates or brothers for brown trout and there was an abundance of fish in the river to catch so when we got bored lit fires, climbed willow trees, played with airguns or hand made bow and arrows as all kids do. That all changed when the willow trees were ripped out to allow water flow stop flooding this altered the fish habitats and never been as good. It was then I was becoming mobile and tying the rod to a bike was heading for other local waters and streams and have fished most of my life, done a heap of tramping riversides, caught a lot of weed, lost a ton of flies/lures, got soaked, wind blown, chased by plovers and cows, zapped on electric fences,broken rods, got stuck, etc, catching and returning some lovely brown trout, no trophies with most in the 1lb to 4 lb range, the biggest I recall was a 6lber caught in a waterpool in a very remote stream in the Chaslands. A few years ago I got pissed with the poor access pollution of the rivers so chucked it in....any way my fishy story.
When my daughter was around 6 years I decided time to introduce her to the world of where dad sneaks off to early weekend mornings or after work in evenings. So off we go to the nearest river picking an easy accessible spot. When she was sick of walking I decided to show here how to cast a lure out into the water. A couple of dry runs on the beach and she picked it up quick. So to the waters edge standing behind to assist she flung out her very first lure. Across the river it went, splosh it dropped, and wahla! She starts to wind in a 4lb beauty. With help it was soon in the net, then she turned and said to me " Can we go now!".
That was it,FFS..thinks fishing is that easy and never been interested in going back.

:lol::lol: Kids aye, unpredictable little sods. Im with you on the river pollution though, fuckin terrible now. We used to swim in the mataura when we first moved here 20yrs ago, now I would,nt let my dogs swim in it. Have you been up the windley Granstar? Some little beautys hanging out up there.:niceone:

Hmm, if you read the Southland Times you would think the water in the Mataura etc is pristine and never been better - Yeah Right!


First it was over-sow the shit out of the tussock land in the headwaters to get better grazing, this caused the rain to run off the land rapidly instead of soaking into the tussocks.

That caused flooding down river a bit so the willows etc had to go and stop banks built.

So you end up with a flash drain of sorts.

Now on top of this you have increasing dairy-farm run-off - and I don't maen just the cow-poopy, there's all the stuff they put on the grass to make it grow better - guess what, vegetation in the water thinks its grass too...

And so it goes.

Peope are funny ( not funny ha-ha, funny queer).

They think if they throw whatever into a river or let whatever drain into a river it will "Go away"
Wrong.

But $$$ speak and with $$$ you can almost justify dumpng anything into a river....

Pristine my arse, Some do think they can do whatever they like to the river, you are right. When I was working out Ardlussa way, the company applied for a permit to extract gravel from the mataura, and the prosses is supposed to go through resource consents and the like, which can take up to a year. So a certain ES officer and a couple of councillors were taken on a bit of a holiday around te anau for a few days on the bosses boat, and I had the digger in the river a week later, without the permits.:(
