Watch out for grit, people!

I dropped my motard on muddy roadworks on Akaroa hill a few weeks back. Entirely my fault for not reading the road surface properly nor giving the slippery mud the respect it needed. Luckily motards crash well and me and bike got away with a few scratches. Since then we have had the big snow and rain.....and grit. Even though it has been swept it is still there but hard to see. Yesterday there was lots of "hidden" suprises on the Akaroa run. I have heard of at least one crash-on utube too now[search mrcornerslut the crash]-because of the grit. The wife and I were walking near the top of Dyers pass yesterday arvo, when a Kawa 250 tucked his front in grit right in front of us. Brand new bike too, i think. So, dont trust the road and be extra careful at the moment.

I watched that video, was kind of his own fault, he only needed to back off when he saw the cones and he would have been fine. I wonder if he picked the lights back up after knocking them over

I went for a ride over there on Saturday, up until that point the road is pretty clean but from those lights all the way to Akaroa there is heaps of loose grit on the road, do be careful everyone (and slow down when you see the cones)

Yeh - I agree that vid shows the rider didn't slow down as he went past the 30kph sign or the cones....and I'm guessing he was expecting stage 2 warnings to come next - more signs and cones.....I think he was a bit hard done by though as the 30kph sign was too close to the shit. A lesson to be learnt - start to slow down - faster.

Just watched the video after what was said above. The rider should feel aggrieved as the 30km/h speed sign should not be the first one you come across. The site is not set out in accordance with COPTTM or any kind of approved Traffic Management Plan. On that basis I would be having a go at the road controlling authority for any damages. No road works signs, no signs re the traffic signals etc etc. If the video ever came to light though my chances of getting a payout would disappear.

At 23 seconds you can see a sign lying down next to some cones. I can guess what sign it might be but as soon as I saw it I would be buttoning off. And once I saw the 30 sign I would be scrubbing off a lot more speed that he did. Then panic set in. Looks like there was plenty of room to stop without falling off or hitting the truck. I guess the problem with sticking "Mrcornerslut" on your fairing is that people will make assumptions. And they'd probably be right.

I was following a car into those traffic lights-the car locked up on grit that was not immediately visible. A timely reminder of unseen hazards! Not till you are following another rider and getting peppered with grit that you realise how much is still there, even after sweeping.....

Amazing, with all the years and kilometers traveled you got caught out in the middle of winter by ""unexpected" grit?
Didnt read the signs, twisted the right hand too much, forget to set a pace that allows for winter road surfaces......sad.
No sympathy for anyone caught out by grit in winter on hills.......ITS FUCKING WINTER what do you think will be on the roads....

He was riding way too fast for too long past a very poorly placed 30kph sign...but I'm assuming he doesn't do that professionally - unlike the "inepts" who were managing the road repairs - they need arse kicking. He got his arse kicked already.

I rode to Akaroa on Saturday in a large, fast riding group of all different bikes and none of us had any drama around that area, with the cones about you have to expect a loose road surface, there were a couple of spots past that with quite unexpected grit though.

Grit in winter shouldn't be 'unexpected'. Rain will fall in some places overnight and not others, temperatures will vary, grit will get laid in some places and not others.

Guy in the vid was having a lovely fang, pity he made some errors of judgement and dropped his bike, but could have been much worse.

If your comment is aimed at me, go fuck youself. Some of us actually ride all year round. I took full responsibility for my avoidable crash. You have no idea as to the exact circumstances leading up to it so dont sermonise about an event you know nothing of. The tone of my thread is not to search for obvious road hazards but more to be aware of roads that have been swept, look clean but yet contain hard to see grit between road chips. Overconfidence in what appears to be a good surface can lead to mrcornersluts wee moment.

Yep needed a bit more defensive riding, while there was almost zero warning of the roadworks or traffic lights, it doesn't make a difference who's fault it is if you wake up in hospital!

In the end looked like he just lost the front at the last second, bummer.
