Engine not running correctly

So after a couple months of my poor bike being stuck in the shed I've finally managed to be able to get the chance to take her for a ride.
Since shes been in the shed and not started for awhile I knew it would take a bit to get started.
Ran it up the road a bit to get the oil flowing through tried the starter, it turned over nicely but then the battery started to die a bit so I went to a push start.
She fired up with less trouble than I thought and left her with on a mid range idle with the choke on a bit while I went to grab my gear for a small run.

Rode up the road for about 500m and she started spluttering, pulled over and it stopped....
Managed to get it started again but only with the choke on full and managed to putter home with my tail between legs...
Would just die if I tried any throttle and if I dropped down the choke would also just die.

Any helpful ideas on what the problem may be? Or where to start.

oh its a Suzuki GSXR 250 1988.

Maybe just stale fuel, but could be more. How many months exactly, the fuel could of varnished if it has been left too long. If you are handy with a tool set and have acan do attitude read some of this, it may help you out. http://www.dansmc.com/mc_repaircourse.htm Good luck.:headbang::headbang:

It hasn't been run for maybe 2 months maybe 10 weeks?

Drain the tank and put in fresh fuel. Drain float-bowls if u have carbs too. Oh and check that the air cleaner box does not have a mouse nest in it.....

Pilot jets probably blocked due to it sitting for a few months...time for a carb clean...:niceone:

gee petrol should be fine after a couple of months no drama.

But could be water in tank etc.


Being that vintage suzi I'd put a multi-meter over the battery when it is running & check the voltage. If it is in the range of say 13-15v then you can be surprised as it is charging properly. Not common on these.

Borrow a meter or buy one from Repco/SC for $20.

Sounds like it ran ok cold,you left it running and went and put your gear on etc,cant see stale fuel being the problem and things went bad once it had warmed up suggests a coil braking down.

suggests a coil braking down.I wouldn't have thought so if it only runs with teh choke out. Weak spark doesn't like a rich mixture.

And a coil will often fuck out when it's hot, but be fone when it's cold. They tend not to half work once they warm up.

Sounds to me like the vacuum tap thingie on the fuel tap isn't doing it's thang. Turn the tap to "prime" and see what happens.

So many times people have brought them to me saying the bike idles badly, and doesn't seem to rev out. I don't even try to get the airbox rubbers on anymore, it's always the problem, and they never seem to go back on and stay in the box.

yep, same troubles ive had..ive never owned one but have helped younger types fuck around with them..oh and the missus
had a 250 accross for a while..thats right, it all comes flooding back now :wait:

Yip.

Flat slides from a GSXR250rr is the way to go. Rare as rocking horse shit though.
