OK winkers, this is the bit where I rally the troops & say a bunch of us Norfies are going to go down to Chch & teach those upstart Mainlanders some manners and whatnot, return with the trophies and get back for a slap up meal of Sardines and 'taties before the Weekend's, um, end.
The BoB is a fantastic race on Ruapuna B track which is long enough to stretch your legs, but short & twisty enough to, As Jason used to put it so eloquently; sort the men out from the homos. A slow bike with decent tyres can easily midpack so you won't be left behind.
The race is 55min + 1 lap & you don't have to be super fit to do that as you would on a kart track. You'll need to go up 2 teeth on the front though.
The events are well run & the chch guys are as good a bunch as you'll find. Race is Sat (Oct 19) so can find accom (could get billeting if we ask) & cruise back home sun, or leg it sat night.
The Glorious General Skunk is organising some transport if that floats your boat, may be able to organise a truck to take a heap of bikes down cheaply.
Can we have a show of hands?
Now here is the rub:
In previous years we organised a whole heap & got maybe a dozen or more norfies there & had a great time.
Last year however Skunk raised the call & there was a lot of 'yeah I'm in talk' But by the time it was to leave stuff it was Skunk carrying the can & only one fine glorious racer that made the trip (ie me).
We'll need to book in the not too distant future & arrange the truck if needs be so think " Can I afford a weekend away/find 2 or $300 in the next 3 months? (1/2 of which you'd drink & eat in a normal weekend anyway).
We'd want a deposit at the time of the booking which would be dependant on how many people were coming & how all travelling, ie would could take a van & a truck, or people could ride or fly.
What says you all?

Yes whining pansie. But for me I'm trying to imagine what it would be like with 7 more HP (i.e. 35% more power than my engine).

I am actually seriously considering coming down as my plate is coming out in Sept. M is keen on the BoB but I would prob not, what other races for buckets are there, ie; a, b & c grades "circulating" before/after the main event??
F5 Dave
10th July 2013, 17:19
Awesome, glad to hear its working out. The meet is run with Bears club. . .actually maybe its CAMS so they run about 5 classes including buckets, but its a slick operation so previously you get a couple of practices, a couple of prelims, then the BoB & maybe a couple of afters if its all run ok, you don't feel short-changed. But no B or C classes sorry.
Usually best to leave falling off for a couple of months after plate out so screw holes can start to close up. But yaknow. .

We could use the screw holes to lock wire if the unthinkable happened

I was not that fast but I did get to see some excellent riding close up, like when Scout came past on her RS125 and dived between two big 4-Strokes as they peeled of for the Fulton Hogan corner.
288752
I never thought I would say this, but I have become a paid up member of the GN125 fan club. Great bike, reputedly, a little down on power compared to the CBR150 that won but the GN is the sort of bike I like. Home made, fast, handles, well developed engine with some interesting ideas and in the race it went the distance. Kick gave me one of his spare clutches which I intend using in my new Beast Engine.
288753
There were a lot of interesting bikes there like this early Ariel Square Four, that looks like it gets ridden regularly.

ok now I'm back to a proper keyboard I'll just reach over for my excuses book, hmm, hold on, here it is: chapter 4 "When you're an old crap man- Denial of the truth"
Well I went in pretty phyc'd, but I'd had a series of broken sleeps that had messed me up & friday was rough despite staying 100% off the juice & sneaking off to bed early (a technique I've seen done before but never employed. - Doesn't seem to work). I felt sick in the morning & couldn't eat most of the day.
Bike was running well at the start & in the first race I took off but backed off to let whoever was going to be a fast local past. Only Matt obliged & I followed to get a free riding lesson. It became obvious that I could pass him, at least on a straight at any time. On about lap 5 I was sitting bolt upright waving at him as he looked back to see how close I was. What a wanker I am, but I figured the physiological game was worth playing on as the physical fitness one was one that I was clearly in deficit.
Anyway 5 sec latter the bike went brrruuurrrr. Long push back from far side of track. Serves me right I figured. Didn't do much for my stamina.
Anyhoo weirdest thing, fouled plug. Which doesn't usually happen in a race. Then I remembered that the quick shift was playing up seemingly operating by itself. I figured that it must have been just too close where I had it positioned & a drooping lever had turned it full on for long enough to foul. Unpluged it & away it went with a borrowed 2nd hand plug from Bert (My new ones were away in the van somewhere).
So went out & did the next race that I won. Matt was quite close behind though.
BOB was called very shortly after so I was still a bit breathless but off we went, we swapped positions a little but he kept coming past at the end of the front straight. My bike was undergeared & was on the limit after 200M sign & by the 100M sign was stuttering on limiter I guess. Bike got a little slower & I couldn't make it past him again. It also became apparent that he had good exit onto main & was prepared to go full throttle around (pothole?) the fast left kink connecting the straights & I was keen to go to work on monday. Bloody kids.
About 15 or 20 min on he had me beat & built up a gap of 200M or so. I could see him & was keeping in check, but there was no way I could get any closer. We'd lapped probably everyone else by then but the bike was not pulling onto the straight like it should or out of the corners. But I was finally starting to learn the track. Then the bike stopped.
The det gauge had started to flash alarmingly, but mid the big race I could either give up or carry on. I figured I was in for a new piston anyway.
Another long push back after watching the race (which he deserved to win, I was hoping his bike wouldn't stop as 3rd place (whoever that was) was not in the hunt).
Back at the pits I found the headbolts all loose & the sparkplug unwound. I think the sustained vibration of being on the limiter must have done this, but I'm still going to need some investigation to sort the issue properly. 3 min with a spanner & it fires up.
Afternoon races: Bike is not as fast, in fact I find I have nothing on Matts FXR on the straights, but he has that left hand kink nailed & I don't. But I'm enjoying riding the track, especially over the hill & I find I'm catching him in the S's so I can close up at that part. Ironically his grouse exit onto the straight & more balls around the kink mean the straight is where I'm losing out. But at least I'm feeling like I'm redeeming myself slightly.
Next race we do a bit of swapping places as I summon more courage at the kink & make a couple of passes into the S's, but I can't keep that going so fall back a little. Then near the end & thankfully near the pit the bike rattles one more time so I pull the clutch. Inspection can wait till wgtn, but I'm sure I've rooted the piston with the airleaks.
oh well, next year.
Thanks to Skunk Leigh & Bert & Richard for getting me & the bike there & all the team. Tony Mac for accommodation which expanded from me & team Skunk to about 10 of us.
And to all the SI guys for making it a ripper event.

well under the threat of Brendan bitch slapping me I thought I better put my point forward.
As I only got my engine back the week before from a rebuild needed through my own stupidity, time was against me. Anyway Brendan pulled all the stops and i got it back with time to do a couple of heat cycles and a quick dyno run to check it was a goodin.
Anyway BOB came around with the bike not being run in anger, although with reasonable showing on the dyno i set myself a top ten finish.
In practice I took it easy for the session wanting to give the fresh motor the best chance, Brendan made a few changes this time when assembling the engine and what a change it made.
With the need to have a good showing in the sprint races to get a good grid it was all on, I used to love the warm up lap race for a good grid! After a good couple of sprint races i qualified 5th on the front row so was happy with that and riding one of the oldest framed bikes in the race. Being old and very fat dosent help with churning out consistantly fast lap times and soon found the skinny kids caught up at the 10min mark and I found my sprint lap speed was waining. Even with Brendan slowing to try and motivate me I found I could push hard for a period but had to back off for the odd lap with the visor up and leathers unzipped slightly. Im not sure of my final result but about 6th and only had Matt lap me twice and Bailie once and three or so finished ahead on the same lap, bloody stoked and I thought I'd see Kickaha a bit more but the old GN is a goodin. No Nofies were ahead of me which was a surpries but its a big ask to go to a big track and get on the pace in a couple of races and practice, no more than we would struggle at kart tracks. It was a pity Dave had issues and Rich had to pull out of coming as well as Al and James deciding to go MTB, WTF!........now that would have been a hoot to watch that lot battling it out. But it only take one hoogie to win a race. :)
Pity I got out of my gear so early as i had an offer to ride a GPR and from what Bren tells me they are pretty special and obviously with more time the Palmy boys had the gear to compete at the pointy end. Thanks for making the effort boys and i'm sure we will see you back, I'm off to Greymouth next week and have some deamons to put to bed, all three Hoogies are going so top 5 is the goal!!!!

Well I've got a stuck ring on the piston, that what I was suspecting caused the power loss after the airleaks, but I was a bit surprised to find the crank pin broken which happened in the 2nd to last race, there was a rattle so I parked it. The main on that side was also loose & I think that was what caused the vibration that loosened the bolts & eventually broke the pin.

Must ask who almost torpedoed me in the second sprint race, just put it in to the hairpin and somebody shot across my bow and fair flew off the track. Think upon realizing I was a Norfie, there intention was to "cross my T" and blow me outta the water. That might have been local quick young gun Bailee Perriton, he totally lost his front brake in the 2nd race !
