Looking at buying a cheap runabout and came across this (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/cruiser/auction-607908613.htm) on trademe.

Don't know much about these bikes :pinch: so just wondering if anyone here has owned or does own one? Can give me a bit of feedback?

Looks slow, being a single banger... and I don't like the look of those drum brakes. For an extra couple of hundred you could probably find something better?

For example, a 2007 Scorpio with 10,000km (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=612868612) on it has just gone for $1500. Still a small single but by all accounts a decent wee runabout and 20 years younger than that SR.

Yep not looking for performance and I guess “Slow” is a perception thing, especially if you ride an RD haha
Just going to be used to run about the city and maybe 20mins max on the motorway

gawd damn, only just started having a poke around today. GUess I should have started earlier. Would Ideally just like a GN or some other manufacturers equivalent. Can see a couple GN's on there in my price range but dont want to jump the gun

Yamahas GN.:eek5:The SR would be my pick, over either the Scorpio (which in this case is the lower power output model of scorpio), and the GN which was always slower, and no more durable than the SR.

And at least it looks like it has a bit o character....

Didn't realise there were a couple of power output variants on the original Scorpio. How do you tell which it is and is it possible to cost effectively improve the lower one?

Also I tend to agree the SR is more interesting but 20 years older might be off-putting to some people.

Edit: a workmate had an SRV (twin) that cleared 100,000kms of mainly commuting with no bother. Pretty impressed by that.

Why don't you buy on of these?

Is it blue, or red? I'm not even kidding! There are other differences of course, the blue ones have spoked wheels as an example.

So to upgrade, give it a coat of paint and it goes faster. Cool!

I know red bikes are ALWAYS faster (of course) but it seems odd they'd go to the trouble to detune one of them. You sure you're not shitting me here?!

The blue one is a different model, the red ones are an upgrade.

Look it up, Yamaha specs have the blue ones at 2 horses less or something. That doesn't sound like a lot, but it's fucken near 10% on one of those little shitters, likely more.

Borrowed one of a mate from work when they were a lot newer, good little commuter very much the same characteristics as a GN. My choice if you can find one would be the SRV250, owned one for about 7 years and commuted daily on it, however like the SR not really good at sustained high speeds.

Wait, you got off an SRV250, and onto a Hyosung 250?

This guy has some personal issues. I think we should let him work through those before we take him too serious like.

SRV didn't have the power to handle 100km at 130km/h, needless to say it would have cost a fair bit to replce the engine so I opted for a new bike (on a good deal). I am aware there is some kind of anti-Korean bike movement on this site which reminds me of the anti Jap movement in the 70s (and yes I'm old enough to remember them), basically it boiled down to the Hyosung having the requirements I need and there is nothing wrong with it at the moment (mind you it is brand new).

for commuting the sr will be fine, ive got a xs for a runabout bike.
its not worth the hassles of boring the barrels as the bottom end won't hack it.
parts wise, bits are availiable on trademe or wenmoto in the uk.

the biggest thing is throw a leg over a few bikes and see what you feel comfortable on..

They went just fine in the day. Expect little as they were nothing more than a reliable little 250.

Well... You upgraded from one slow as fuck, but grouse 250, to another slow as fuck, but way expensive bike. I think that's the issue here.

OP, if you can find an SRV that cheap, do buy it and then bring it to me, they're bloody cool machines.
The SR250s are good little bikes, but I wouldn't even consider paying more than $1k for such an old bike, that's essentially a crappy commuter.
GNs are the best bike in the world, ever. :sweatdrop I only say that 'coz I own one. They're actually pretty gay. Like, balls on tonsils gay.
