View Full Version : Gremlins from barrel tampering?

So, the key barrel on the GPz got attacked while I was away up in New Plymouth with the family a couple of weeks back. I got back, the flatmates told me that they caught someone snooping around the area where the bike was stored. I took it for a ride as normal, and a few hours later I gave it a thorough once over, the metal shroud on one side of the barrel was bend downwards. Looked like someone had tried to attack it with a flathead. I presume trying to remove steering lock. (Thank fuck for those) But I know that I can't do much about it not being there at the time of the incident. Police report and move on. But now the bike is packing a massive hissy fit. The idiot lights turn on in the following sequence when you turn the key.

Battery
Oil
Stand
Fuel level. (Although its buggered atm, and only has one flashing bar)

But now its started to act up. The fuel light sometimes remains solid, and pressing the starter resets the idiot lights over and over again with no crank. Sometimes half of the oil and stand light remain solid, this time with a really weak crank. And then when it decides not to be a whiny little bitch it starts. And is all good for a while. And then all this weird shit starts again. Ive had a look at the wiring around the barrel and there is no signs of tampering. No wires have been cut. Most likely because they realised that the bike is dead weight unless they can access the barrel to remove the steering lock. (Its right outside a window)

I'm assuming that this means that the ignition barrel be fucked, but I'm just wondering if it means that this is the start of another electrical gremlin that needs his ass handed.

And another non electrical related question, If I replace the barrel, will most aftermarket barrels for this bike allow me to still use the steerng lock.?

I would say they've tried hammering a flathead down it.
I would pull it out and pull the switch off the bottom of the barrel and check it over, it may be crushed

i'd agree with the last statement there should be plenty of second hand barrells available a parts search should find what other models they fit and usually they'd have a key number stamped on them if you dont get one with a key.

I figured as much. Nothing I can do. <_<

Well, I guess that I'll be getting some sockets and screwdrivers to get to the barrel to inspect it. There goes the idea of a new jacket for a week or so. :bye:

Don't worry, most modern bike thief scum wouldn't know how to start it,as I remember my GPz had to have the clutch lever pulled in to start and it also had....shock horror.......carburetors and a choke knob

That would really fuck them up
