View Full Version : So you want to get a job young man?

Ok so I was in at Dick Smith today buying a TV cable when a chap shows up & enquires; Hi I don't suppose you have any full time jobs do you? No I suppose not.
chap at counter says; I think we're pretty alright or similar & chap says thanks & wanders out. After I leave I see him wander to a seat and start texting.
i almost go say Hi and tell him what went wrong. But then figure maybe someone keener should get there. But later I figured that it still took guts to go ask, so I should have. So I'm posting here in case a young lad as clueless as I was at his age is listening. Sorry bud.
Not saying I'm any sort of expert but I've employed a few people along the way and could quickly say there was 3 mistakes in his approach.
1. asked the wrong person. Spotty kid at the counter has no idea when jobs are available and doesn't really care. Fastest he can get rid of you, easier his job is.
2. No preparation. Should have called first to ask who branch manager was and asked for him and when he worked. Also should have researched the company to know as much as possible about it.
3. Didn't sell himself. Shut the door on his own face in his intro. Do some research into the company and lead with "I love technology and this is where I want to work because. . . ". What do I have to do to get a job here?
Ok this is real simple stuff and you will hit people at the wrong time when they don't need someone or they are busy with something else. But if you fluke some timing or are tenacious enough you will find someone who needs to fill a role. It's bought me 3 of my best employees. A volunteer is worth 3 pressed men. Show some interest and you're at least further ahead from much of the crowd.
good luck, and don't get down with rejection as the wrong time will happen more often than not, that's just working, sometimes you just don't want to be dealing with someone on the phone or turning up wanting a job. Try later.

Agreed.:2thumbsup
Have you ever seen the footage of the japanese company that held job interviews on the top of mount fuji?
One sure way of weeding out the slackers:lol: Out of the 100 odd that applied, only nine made it to the actual interview.

LOL
More likely he needed the name of a couple of businesses so he could 'prove' to his WINZ case officer that he is actively looking for work. Mrs used to get them in on a regular rotation when she worked in retail.

Cynical, you may be right. But why bother go in? there's no proof of him doing so. Anyway that's not really the point of this thread. Maybe it's of no use to anyone.
But one might try.

Sorry. Yes your advice is pretty much spot on for those who are serious about seeking work by fronting up and asking.

I'd expect a C.V drop to the store manager for that kind of job.
I've never got a job like that, though. And don't really know anybody who has?
Current job was meant to be me helping out for a few days, been around two months so far. No CV involved or any mentions of any qualifications.
There seems to be a problem with somebody like me finding constant work at a job like DSE or a supermarket

If your good with machines it pays way better anyways than sucking up to morons
If I needed more money I could part out cars and make $50-100 an hour

I did a water pump on a telstar for a fella last week, and because I sorta thought he was not a bad guy, I only charged him $100. Well fuck me did he go off, thought I was ripping him off big time. Until I broke it all down for him, in a way he could understand.
He will be getting charged the full rate next time if he is brave enough to come back.:devil2:

Well it's off topic but funny that people assume that cause their car is only worth , well lets say twice that, that any work done on it should be at a smaller amount too.

A fair percentage of jobs aren't advertised, so they are filled because you know someone (can't help there), or luck. To be lucky you have to be out there to let it work. Won't from your bedroom.
your way above is how I got job before last

Yup! You tend to get luckier the more effort you put in, funny that... :weird:

Tried this once - actually got a job. So there's one success case I guess.
But yeah, its very much being confident, going to the right person and making a case for why you should get a job. I'm not sure of too many people who can genuinely state they want to being on the checkout though

It is possible in this case that its standard practice to turn away jobseekers. I know where I work we are instructed to direct them to our website, and even the Manager will do the same as all hiring must go through head office.
However for anything more serious than retail then the OPs advice is perfect.
