Someone told me today that a couple of guys he knows were stopped on there bikes with no rego....
Rego had been on hold for some time and the bikes were only normally registered for 3 months a year...
They were out for a quick spin on a nice winters day.
The cops have taken the plates from the bikes and they will have to be re-registered thru VTNZ...Has anyone heard of
this happening any where else in NZ?...Is it legal for them to do this?
I Don't know this as fact as I only got the info 3rd hand.
Any comments.

I understand there is a period of time if the vehicle is not registered the plates become 'dead' if they are not on hold. No idea how long ......... bound to be info online.

No idea but you ave me worried as i am another that only bothers to register mine for a few months each year.I doubt they can remove the plates simply because the regos on hold but....methinks there will be more to it as with most 3rd hand tales.

im thinking the same, and theyd usually green sticker the vehicle before removing the plates, unless the bike/bikes in question were de-registered
im in the same boat, no reg on anything atm

From LTSA website
When we cancel your registration
The NZTA will cancel your vehicle's registration if your vehicle must be continuously licensed and you leave it unlicensed for 12 months. If we cancel your registration you'll still have to pay any outstanding licence fees. We may refer outstanding licence fees to a debt collection agency.
If your vehicle isn't required to be continuously licensed, we'll cancel the registration after two years.
How do you know if your vehicle must be continuously licensed?
Want to start using your vehicle after cancellation?
Your vehicle must be correctly registered to drive it on the road. You'll need to re-register your vehicle if you want to start using it again after cancellation of registration.

yeh I reckon you're right..there may be more to this.
From what I understand the rego was on hold,so the plates were live...could be a bit of a worry for those
who only register for 3 or 6 months a year and take the odd 'un-regoed ride!'...

When the cop runs the plate through and it comes back with the dreaded words "These plates should not be on any vehicle on any road" you know things are not going to end well...cos they're dead plates.

Pay the rego, or stay the fuck off the road. Or else don't pay the rego and ride the fucker anyway. Get caught riding with no rego? Harden the fuck up.

Heard of plates being taken from a bike not long ago when it had the plate on from another bike that was legal. 2 dead bikes in one hit.
With APNR being trialled in Police cars now the days of getting away with will be numbered.

NZ is such a big place it will be easy to.....no, wait.....
Not paying the tax never made any sense to me. I got caught speeding a few times and I reckon because the bike was mint and the paperwork was all in order all I got was a warning.
No WOF - No rego and I *know* it would have been a different story. Call it an investment in damage mitigation.

About a year ago I read something about how plates were going to be taken on the spot if the rego' was on hold an the vehicle was found being used on the road.
Kind of to be expected I guess.
Me,I keep everything up to date because it's just not worth the money and hassle if I don't an then get sprung.
It's also a condition of my insurance agreement.

In case of an accident, riding an unlicensed (not on hold) bike on the road may effect your insurance, assuming the bike is insured?
My bike is fully insured and it's always rego'ed.

No, this is another case of money grubbing company attempting to contract out of the law under hopes that people without clue won't push back.
In an oops indicent, the insurance company must prove beyond all reasonable doubt that the bike being un-WoFed or un-regoed contributed DIRECTLY to the accident.
Say your WoF was out 1 day, and you got rear ended by someone while stopped at the lights, that wouldn't invalidate your insurance claim.
If you binned it while your WoF was out a day upon inspection their inspector finds the rear tyre bald, then you have something to worry about.
There are laws in place to stop insurance companies from slithering out of their obligations on technicalities. Educate yourself.

True the above.Never had insurance, tried when I was sixteen to insure my gsx 1100 them that didn't laugh/show me the door just pointed to the biggest number at the bottom of the page.Never bothered asking again and 30 years/many bikes later never needed it,touch wood won't either. The money saved would have bought many bikes.
RE rege I'll pay what is fair but with 2 bikes over 1000cc they can go fuc... themselves, catch me.Rego on hold/current WOF at least 6 months a year.

Nice.
My insurer (bike specific) says "Don't pay it!" WoF = yes, rego = NO!
Glad I'm with my insurer...

^^ Im with Dave on that,
I got pulled over doing a redonkulous speed a few nights back and whether or not he got a bearing on the speed I was doing,
He was quick to check my license and radioed in the plate to confirm the wof and rego, and with a frown he sent me on my way ticketless.

Yeah well, if my experiences are anything to go by.......if a bit of excess speed is the only thing wrong, the chances of a warning are better than when running around minus either rego or wof :sweatdrop

Where were you when we were protesting the levy increases? We could have done with your support back then LOL
I am a 3rd Party Insurance Supporter. Take the risk yourself by all means, but cover the "other" party for the damage apportioned to you by their insurance company.
Either that, or pay the $$ down at the court house and declare bankruptcy. Think 8 years out of your life in regards to any kind of borrowings once you do.

If you get caught plate swapping its a go to court offence, not an instant fine.
If you can't pay for the fine and you can't pay for the rego well you are going to get stopped some time.

Sorry but this is NOT another case of a money grubbing company doing anything other than offering a considerable discount if "I wanted" to take advantage of it.
Maybe you buy insurance without reading the fine print and taking advantage of the different plans on offer,,,but I certainly don't.
