View Full Version : MNZ rule changes to be aware of

Hmm, just got that email as most of you will have.
As we have this in our rules:
24.2.2
Construction of Solo Motorcycles:
Miniature road racers are to be constructed in accordance with, and comply
with, Chapter 10.
The below must follow:
(There may be more, by all means point them out)
Rule
22.6.2
Once the meeting has been declared wet, are rear facing red LED light must be fitted and
operational. The light must be fitted to the motorcycle and in a position that is visible to any
following rider and be of a minimum size of
25mm and maximum of 45mm
Rule
22.8.19
Front brake caliper mounting bolts, must be wired or pinned in the tightened position
Rule
22.8.21
A chainguard or sharkfin made of a suitable rigid material MUST be fitted
in such a way to prevent
trapping between the lower chain run and the final drive sprocket at the rear wheel. All edges must
be rounded
Don't worry, we have until Thursday to comply.
Rule Changes - Effective 1 August 2013 (http://mnz.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=ebf5440c0b34ac6fa7f0aa298&id=15c81d086c&e=e74636d536)
The Board of MNZ have ratified rule changes that were presented by Commissioners. These rule changes will take effect 1st August 2013.

But dave all of those rules are located in Chapter 22, not Chapter 10. As I understand it we do not need to comply with Chapter 22 as our rules are covered under Chapter 24.

Ha! Rear facing light that's a fucking good one for a bucket! Half the buckets around are lucky to keep the engine running when it gets wet let alone a rear facing light.
But don't worry, buckets is a self policing class so the MNZ highly unlikely to show anyway.

Get one of those dynamos that run off the front wheel, just flick it on when it rains

Try turning up to a road race meet & saying you don't have to abide by the Road racing rules because you're special & see how you go. It isn't under a 'class' like Supersport for example. its clumped with many other general rules.

You obviously weren't at "The big wet one" a few years ago, most of those that stopped running were because they crashed
Even with an open carb and no rear guard mine didn't have a problem

I'm assuming there will be a supply of cheap all day battery stick on lights were intended by this rule (the wording seems to indicate you must use a 25mm or bigger singular LED which may be more than a little problematic, but not the wording intention I guess).
On a gloomy winter day with heaps of spray & slow & crashed bikes on a fast track like Ruapuna, maybe this isn't such a dumb idea.

Ok after looking at them a bit harder (not a work), rule 22.6.2 we will need to comply with (if a bucket meeting is ever actually declared wet. It has never happened to me on a Kart track yet, only once at TRSS); however rules 22.8.19 & 22.8.21 only apply for the road race championships. Therefore these two rules only apply for those running at the GP once a year (bit like the licence).
So in summary I was wrong (arse biscuit).

I don't think I've ever seen hard criteria for declaring a meeting wet anyway....For some it will be a cost saving - don't have to buy wets if you don't want to fit a light. Classics will notice a drop in runners on wet days - try fitting a light to a Manx Norton...
Bastard of a rule - i've got to fit lights to anything going to Greymouth now.

The one that strikes me as being the biggest pain in the arse is the rear sprocket bit. Drilling a couple of bolts and cable tying on a bicycle lamp should be easy enough.

I'm just waiting for the first bike brought down by a camera on the track and the possible level of engineering in the attatchment of taillights won't be any better....
i see on tardme there are solar powered taillights available - no use at all on a dark day at Greymouth lol.

The tail light rule will apply to Buckets in some cases. It was worded with the intention of peddy bike tail lights being used.
Last round of the Bridgestone Winter Series had many of them fitted and the meeting was declared wet.
Chain guard rule means I have some work to do...

Suitable bike lights available from the WH, but I got a handful from Alibaba. Which I'll be selling at ridicuoulsly inflated prices at the next wet event & possiblty not at all to Rich with his fancy wet weather tyres, - but hes a tredlie from way back so I expect he'll be sorted.
As we are starting to understand these rules will apply to everyone at certain events & every event at a later stage (like 2014).
I've drilled the calliper bolts on the 50 that weren't done.
Just need to sort some sharkfins.

I'm loving the idea of people drilling holes in their swingarm to fit these "sharkfins". Deano was all set to do it, I pointed out that clamping them is a better bet, dunno what way he went though.
If buckets are running a National points series, they will have to comply with all the rules, and any street meetings.

And to run at Mt Welly. The organising committee has made that call.
Personally I dint have to much of an issue drilling into my FXR swingarm. Have you seen how fucking solid those things are! If it was a lighter alli swingarm or something similar I would prob be having second thoughts.

Can put a flashy red light hidden away so it can only be seen when it's on. Looks flash as like an F1 car!

I will be making a fancy little circuit for LEDs on my tail piece to make a cool looking pattern (or possibly using red CCFL tubing - looks like lightsabers).
If anyone wants a cool little custom lighting circuit put on their tailpiece, let me know :)
-Battery operated (sealed box with switch)
-100% custom
-LED or CCFL
I can do something a little more custom than just that if you want something crazy too.
Henk
17th September 2013, 18:18
If you are going down this road I'd stick with the LEDs, the CCFL approach may be a little less crash proof.

Definitely suggest LEDs. lightweight, safer, easier for me to wire up ;)
