Last time i attempted to buy a second hand motocross bike there was no way to check weather it had been stolen or not.
I got the frame number of the bike , rang the police and ltsa but they were both no help.
How do people check?

Im thinking about making a motorcycle register. Or stolen bike website. where people could upload pictures of there stolen bikes and buyers could search for frame numbers to check that they are not buying a second hand bike. has this been done already in new zealand ?
Is this a good idea ..
would people use it. (it would be free)

Funnilly enough, there was a peice on the news the other night about a couple who had setup a website for people to register their stolen goods and vehicles.

Now as for the name .... ummm .. I think it was something like

www.stolen-lost.co.nz - Yeah thats it.

It's only just started up though so I guess their database quite small still.

Hope that helps.

I would imagine that you could probably get some sort of sponsorship from motorcycle insurance companies, also if it's done as a free service some of the NZ based bike mags could provide you with some advertising space or at least do a little article on the site.

It certainly would be handy, the only thing about sites like these is getting the word out there.

I'd use it.

Best of luck.

Yeah theres www.stolen-lost.co.nz or www.stolenz.co.nz. I just registered my stolen KTM on www.stolenz.co.nz like 5mins ago. I'm member no.38.

It only costs $3.95 so it's worth every penny. I suggest you take a look and tell your mates about it. :Punk:

It's real easy to get caught because there's no data - I bought an XR once, registered and fully street legal like they all were in those days,I knew several of the previous owners....and then one tells me the bike was stolen when it was nearly new,by his uncle.Like, thanks a lot eh? There was no way for me to prove if I had a stolen bike or not,it was clean as far as the Cops were concerned,no way to trace the original owner.I just had to put that aside and enjoy the bike.
