Hi,
Wonder if anybody would know the answer to this. My husband wants to start riding a bike and is on his way to get his restricted licence. He is not sure whether a Honda CBR 600RR is OK to buy while on a restricted licence. He is really keen to buy this bike but cant see it on the list. Would be really grateful for any advice on this. Thanks

Not a chance that this would be a learner's bike.

You can pull 2 spark plugs turning it into a cbr300rest until graduated to full licence then change it back to a 600RR.

If you were super smart you'd pull 2 injector plugs, saves petrol, still look like a bad ass :2thumbsup

That's like someone asking about ferraris but you recommend they have a look at a prius.

I was told that you can have any bike over 250cc as long as you install throttle restrictor which limits the throttle opening to only about 10% which effectively puts the effective horsepower to be 10% of original manufacture specification.

15 seconds or less (Seriously, in this day and age do people still not look shit up?) of googling would have disproven that theory. Bike has to be less than 660CC, less than 150kw/tonne, and on this list here http://www.nzta.govt.nz/licence/getting/motorcycles/lams.html .
There are some restricted bikes on there, but they have to be factory restricted (IE sold that way). You can't buy a kit to restrict them down (thats a UK/European thing).
There's no way for a CBR600RR to be learner legal (and rightly so!)

It's only illegal if you get caught. If...

There is a supersport you can ride on your Ls, not sure if you can get in nz though, look up GSXR600U, I reckon it would be a pig to ride though.
Edit: even if you could get one it's not on the LAMS list but I think there is a method to get it checked and approved, and then if you want more power an expensive ecu swap is required. (after you get your full license, of course)

Dear Jules...
The real question here is 'how much do you love your husband?" or possibly - or maybe "would you like to start a new relationship with a nice fat insurance payout?"
So the real question is - who has a great history of claim settlement on life policies? The premiums wont matter much as you wont be making many of them and it pays not to go too cheap on these things. Also make sure your home and contents will cover his riding gear as it gets scuffed up sliding along the road.
As a final recommendation - investigate disability insurance too. You really don't want to get stuck with him in a vegetative state for the rest of your natural with no income...
In short - no - its not LAMS and NO its not a good bike for him to start out on...

I think you might be mistaken. The only reference on the net I can find regarding this 'U' spec are 2 posts on kb.
I believe you may be confusing it with the GSX650F, a model that I believe does have a LAMS variant.
As always though, I'm happy to be proved wrong if you can find us some details.

It's on the LAMS list. look it up.
It's also not available here, but is an Australia and UK variant. 33hp restricted.

Yeah, I did find it after further investigation.
33hp for a machine that should be 100. No wonder it was discontinued after a single year in production.
I'd be astounded if sales reached double figures, so don't hold yer breath for a second hand one to show up at a dealers near you.

Yeah they're not very good  we never got 'em here anyway, so it's not a problem.
None of the restricted bikes are very good, all wheezy and fucked.

If sportbike styling and ergos are your blokes thing (and he insists on a new shiny toy) then tell him to have a look at the Kawa 300 or Honda cbr500r - 39hp and 47hp respectively and about $10k + on road cost.
If it were me I wouldn't spend ten grand on my first bike let alone twice that for a new 600rr. TBH, if he's looking at 600 supersports on his learners then he doesn't seem very clued up.

Having ridden the 300 Ninja you couldn't really call it sportsbike ergos and I suspect the new CBRs are the same, if the styling is what he is after, they fit the bill, otherwise there are plenty of 250 and 400cc race replicas on the LAMS list that would probably suit his taste a little better while remaining legal.

I started riding on my Cb600f (hornet) and they didnt seem to mind at all :-) Not quite the same, but similar bike. Got my license on it, and a ticket from a biek cop, never pulled up about the type of bike once.

Yeah, totally fucking unenforcable. Like the cops at the roadside would have to pull you bike apart to see if it was restricted or not.
You really want THAT to happen?

Hi, its me that lady again, posting from 90s account for some unspecified reason.
Thanks for clearing that up about the RR. He'll just have to get that one next - shame - he saw one is SUCH a divine colour! To start now thought we've decided that a Monster 659 will be OK, as we've seen one in red. Anyhoo, as I said he wants to start riding, and as he's ridden a bicycle before when he used to have a paper round, we reckon he can pick up the motorbike thing on the way to the test. Basically first gear is down right, and then its up? Clutch on the right foot? Any tips appreciated!!! Thankssss!!!!!!
ps - thanks for those life insurance tips!!!!
