So went to watch a legitimate non-legitimate movie on YouTubes which I ended up finding only it had the message
"This video previously contained a copyrighted audio track. Due to a claim by a copyright holder, the audio track has been muted."
Sure enough a few idiots were complaining the vid didn't have sound (obviously can't read or don't understand england) Sound didn't work on Windows or the PS3 but here's the strange part, sound worked fine on the Mac, in-fact ended up watching the whole movie through the Mac hooked to the TV; Wasn't as convenient as watching via PS3 but it did the job fine audio & all.
Wonder if Linux would also play audio of muted vids?

shouldnt matter what OS it is on, the muting is done at the server end, not the client...

That's what I woulda thought, but like mentioned comments were complaining of no audio, Windows & PS3 obeyed the audio mute, OS X played audio (Windows & OS X were running on same machine too). I thought it weird, might have to experiment a bit see if it was a 1 off or something else

I use linux and windows and usually if they won't play because of copyright, they won't play on either. Apple isnt known for playing nice with others so maybe they have found some way to override googles block, but, it seems unlikely.

Cached from a previous watch on the mac, or the url is different and the proxy at the isp is delivering a different copy?

Na I only found it last night & it was 1.5hr movie, I don't allow cache that big.
URL was same as I just used watch history to view on diff device/OS
They were all at home on same connection within 5min time period.

Weird! Maybe Youtube recognises the browser type, and Steve jobs owned the copyright to the soundtrack ? :P

Well after a few trials, it seems that only Safari on Mac will play sound on copywrite muted video
Firefox on Mac & Windows will obey the mute same with Chrome on Mac, Windows & Android also the YouTube apps on any device (PS3, Galaxy, iPad) even Safari on the iPad won't play sound, oh and IE doesn't play sound either... Just Safari on the Mac*

* Don't currently have Linux installed to try or Safari on Windows
