I just got a text from a friend and apperently the street race this year has been canned due to lack of skilled volunteers... :argh:

We've been planning to do the street race for a few years now and every year we've put it off, but this year we finally get ourselves organised, and had motels booked and everything. this was suppose to be my first race in a number of years, and really looking forward to getting back into it.... and then they cancelled it on us... Really gutted. :weep: :crybaby:

Yes, you are right, the racing is cancelled for this year. Due to happen again in 2007.

Go to the Motorcycling NZ website and there's a press release.

GREYMOUTH STREET RACE POSTPONED
12 August 2005

GREYMOUTH MOTORCYCLE STREET RACE INC. P.O. BOX 166 GREYMOUTH
AUGUST NEWSLETTER
DECISION TO POSTPONE THE EVENT IN 2005

Dear Stakeholders, Riders, Clubs and Interested parties

It is with regret that we are writing to say that the Greymouth Motorcycle Street Race will not go ahead this year.

Most of you will be aware that the event always runs on the knife-edge of money and labour availability. To manage this, the Committee sets up "waypoints" in the form of a series of targets which need to be reached to run the event.

These are things like rider numbers, equipment availability, availability of personnel, track maintenance, availability of safety equipment, finance etc. The contingency plan has been to postpone the event for a year if critical waypoints could not be achieved.

In common with many other small communities, we have a contracting pool of people with the required skills and time to run increasingly complex events on a voluntary basis. We were not able to attract enough people to fill key Committee positions at this year's AGM.

The decision was made to table a motion to recess the event for a year, if the positions of Organiser and Secretary could not be filled by the next meeting. We have been unable to fill these positions and the motion to recess the event has been passed.

WHERE TO NOW?

For some time, we have recognised the need for a paid event organiser in this community and the Committee and others have been working towards this over the past eighteen months.

Sources of funding for a paid organiser have been identified. With the help of an advisor from the West Coast Development Trust and in cooperation with the District Council, we are working towards putting the Street Race on a sound organisational and financial footing.

There is every intention to save the event and develop it further. It is the town's flagship event and there is a strong desire to develop the whole Labour Weekend into a weekend of complimentary events, beginning in 2006. Once funding has been secured and a job description finalised, the Committee and stake- holders will seek an appropriately skilled person or organisation to take the event into the future.

We apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment this decision will have caused for many of you. This has not been an easy decision, but the time has come to deal with the issues that endanger the event and stop it from developing to its full potential.

Yours sincerely
The Committee, Greymouth Motorcycle Street Race Inc.

Plan on doing Nelson Street Race on January 8th instead then

if it was to be your first race for a number of years you wouldn't be allowed to enter, you have to have a minimum 3 signings in your licence beofre being allowed to compete at a street race

The minimum 3 signings, does that mean you have to get three independent police officers to verify your capable of speeding? Need demerit points / speed camera photo's as proof if the original documents can't be found?

All serious now, what's that all mean?

The Nelson road race should be fun. If the location is the same as 10yrs ago, it'll be fun.

I thought they weren't going to be using the circuit they'd been using again? But not sure on that one. I'll see if I can find out.

The Nelson Council and the Nelson Port Company were doing a deal and swapping some land which meant the original circuit would be unavailable

the 2005 circuit was already different than the 2004 circuit although it used a large part of the 2004 circuit, we have been told it will still be at the port and possibly run the opposite way using some parts of the orignal

It is very different to racing on the track and riding on the road and the potential to get hurt if you crash is much greater
