21st September

Adventure bikes or trail bikes ok, but will need to have proper knobbly tyres.
Trailer Trash welcome :innocent:

The plan is to meet up at the Owhango hotel just before midday on the saturday and spend the afternoon exploring the 42nd traverse including all the side tracks.

Stay at the hotel for the evening have a quiet bevy or 2  and tell some lies about how good we all were and the 10m high vertical banks that we rode up and then jumped back off.

The next morning do some more of the same ( riding that is, not drinking ) and after lunch we all go our seperate ways.

Plenty of accomodation at the pub or the forest lodge next door or camping is available out the back of the hotel.

Calendar entry is up in the Public Road events section to keep track of numbers.

I would like to but if you are doing lots of exploring down side trails it might involve more effort than my health is up to at the moment. The 42 itself would be fine but getting stuck bikes unstuck wouldn't be.

Yep I second that, we could have a separate nana group for us overloaded dual purpose bikes with cheap slick tyres on.
Been meaning to go mountain biking through there too. The MTB crowd say its bad for cutting up tyres but then they said that about karapoti too and didn't get any punctures on the Trek XC.

Just a suggestion for those wanting to do the main track only... it takes about 1.5 hrs one way on the 42nd so why not do Owhango to National park (via 42nd), Fishers there and back, then National park to Owhango, opposite direction on the 42nd. Lots of riding with a bit of a break in the middle and you get to experience the 42nd and Fishers. Thats all doable on any adventure bike with knobs and makes for a great afternoons riding.

Actually , yes but I might need some better tyres for that, I recall making a mess of the 990 trying to do the 42nd on bald road tyres a few years ago.... I'm in the process of adventurising it properly (well, sort of), adding carb, gearbox & diff vents and bolting the GPS to the front somewhere in preparation of the Dusty Butt (still keeping those BT45s on tho).
This ride is going to be a trail ride tho, I want to explore those side tracks and while Lurch would make an excellent path clearing device on the way down hill, I suspect it may be a one time exercise!
450 for this ride, I want to enjoy the experience.

Due to the amount of rain expected in the area over the next 3 days we have decided to postpone the ride until a later date.:(

River levels come up very quickly in the area and could likely become too deep to cross, this would limit the amount of riding area to us :weep:

Will try for a date next month and hopefully the weather will play the part :blank:

:niceone: That date works for me.
I've already done some exploring around there and found some slippery downhills that I doubted the WRR could have got up but fortunately we didn't need to backtrack :sweatdrop:
The Top Track to 10 Bunk Hut is a good track for medium adv bikes.
Climo Track is for the dirty bikes. braap, braap. If it's not mud it's camouflaged holes.

Hi Guys, yesterday through work we hosted an MX track day at Maddix MX park in tauranga with some of our vendors who are into dirt bikes.

Anyway, to make a long story short on a long fast uphill i got cross rutted and it all ended in tears with a badly disslocated shoulder, so i spent last night in tauranga hospital.

Right arm is in an immobilizer for the next 3 weeks, then physio after that.

So no bike riding for me for the next 6 + weeks.

If you Guys still want to have the ride, then carry on without me.

It may be early next year before i am back on a dirt bike.:cry::cry:

I rode half of the 42 Traverse from the Owhango end on Thursday up to the main creek crossing, cant remember what stream it is. The track is in good nick, pretty wet though, loads of standing water, puddles etc.
The creek halfway through was well up and a bit murky after all the rain on Tues and Weds, and being in there solo, I decided against risking a drowned bike without backup assistance, so turned back and headed out the same way. I'd guess the water levels would have dropped by Sat or Sun to safely get through okay.

On that note, I also rode Fishers the whole way through, only the first couple of km's have been gravelled for the bicyclists, but as soon as you hit the private farm section through to Kurua Rd, it reverts back to the usual slushy, sodden, greasier than a butcher's dog clay shit, which guaranteed will coat you and you bike with a layer of the central plateau's finest slop. Upper Retaruke Rd, Kauturoa and Kawautahi Rds however were loads of fast fun, the wet gravel was awesome to ride.
Did some more exploring around Erua and Middle roads with some fun bush tracks off to the side.
Got me a contact to possibly make a loop track involving the whole of Ruatiti Rd as well :msn-wink: Say no more.

There is probably 4-5 days of great remote gravel roads, bush track riding around Taumarunui, National Park, Raetihi areas, you've just gotta get lucky with the weather, have a big gas tank, and watch for suicidal wildlife, goats, pigs, turkeys, and pheasants. A hunter's paradise, I tell ya!
