View Full Version : Moto Guzzi: Tonti framed model wanted

Hi all, I am after a tidy tonti framed Guzzi. Have been looking for a while and nothing seems to come up on TM. 850T or T3 1000SP or LM preferred (mk1 or 2 probably outside my price range). Would prefer one from a guzzi enthusiast, with mechanical history etc (sound mechanicals etc main concern - km's ok as long as it's been cared for, am prepared to do cosmetics etc if needed for the right bike). Would prefer early model-spoked wheels but will consider anything. Anywhere in NZ considered for right bike - can pick up if in SI. Cash buyer

I'd ask Pete at Moto Kiwi if he knows of anything or maybe look at importing something.
Getting hard to find now ;-)

Meh - next week there will be 4 of them...
Having said that our Mk2 went in an hour and would have suited you to a T. If you want a cafe racer I guess you could start with a cheap Cali as they are still a Tonti frame albeit modified.

You've figured out my plan!! Yeah, am wanting a cafe project-but didn't want to scare off any old school guzzi enthusiasts they'd be loosing another original bike! Thought about Cali (heap's of them about) but would prefer older as i can always convert back after my youth!

You gave it away when you said you prefer wire wheels....

I'd cut up a cali

A Mk4 isnt much less problematic than a cali to cafe...
Jimmy_White
9th August 2013, 20:02
yeah, don't really want a 4, think i just got excited that a tonti actually came up! same probs as cali i suppose-headstock and wheelbase, at least this one had a 18" front but in hindsight better off to keep waiting....

Haha! Have just ordered my alloy tank and tail from the UK, bike will be getting stripped soon-pretty long list but starting with front end first: mainly polishing any painted parts, removing gauges and adding clip ons/new gauge etc then onto the frame....

I'm tinkering with Monza, Gutsibits in the UK seems to have a good stock of parts at reasonable prices. Shipping might add up but could try that new NZ post Youpost.
ADV rider Oldskool section is a good place to get info too.

will do, check out Bike Exif post today-another KaffeeMaschine guzzi, this time with factory tank/seat and 1000s style paint-looks pretty cool, would be cheaper than alloy bodywork...

Dunstall, Read Titan, Ocelot Engineering, Monotrack Engineering, & Interpart Corp used to make rear-set components suited to drum brake rear units  . Another way would be to use a gear lever unit with a linkage arm and make a actuation arm to suit ;)

cheers, I'll look them up. With position of brake lever mount (rear) on these i'm even thinking about mocking my own out of a universal set. Dime City Cycles have a few uni's and they look pretty simple-thinking might shorten/reposition brake lever and just mount a plate/peg...if it was a disc rear would have been a piece of bolt on piss-pity i like the drums!....all this thinking makes my brain hurt!:pinch:

All those brands were just complete mount units...mounting plate with everything attached; there's also Racecrafters International too. Plenty of peeps make there own set-ups...just got to have access to the right tools :msn-wink:

He does amazing work-check out his website. Seems a really good guy too, i contacted him re some parts and was great to deal with, just a little pricy buts that's to be expected with the quality of his bikes. That one's a nice departure from what he normally does-more of a factory look, that LM tank looks great. His machines are really what swayed me back into Guzzi's, that and Ben Part's Zagato (davida helmet ad)

Cheers, yeah pretty stoked with condition when it turned up. Am wanting up swept pipes, so couple of options; adding angled inserts/or bending current ends and using these mufflers (don't sound bad-pretty open) or may park these and add megaphones. Quite like black pipes so if i weld i might high temp black the whole lot as center sections isn't polished. using current mufflers might look a bit 'long'-will have to see when seat/tail unit arrives and is mounted.

Cheers jimmy who's doing your tank in the Uk? I know there's one guy who has a reputation for taking about a year and a half to complete an order once paid for. Sounds like its going to look great They are already a beautiful looking bike anyway. I'd hang onto anything you remove though I'm doing an r80 at the moment and have endeavoured to not brutalise it is I am getting a new sub frame made and can return it to stock if I ever needed to ( highly unlikely but she was so mint that I felt bad about hacking into something so nice) look fwd to seeing your progress. :2thumbsup

yeah have heard The Tank Shop does awesome work but takes a long while, so I'm going with TAB Classics in Wales. Richard there has been great to deal with and really easy communication wise which just seemed to hard with tank shop-no email! Tank shop had a couple of tanks available immediately-one enduro style and another but they aren't really what i wanted. TAB's work looks good and they couldn't have been more helpful. Sounds like i'm having the same dilemma as you with your R80-the more i look at mine i feel bad about changing it! I'll be keeping everything i take off but still feel a bit bad changing such an original-doesn't help when i start pricing things up and everyone that sees it telling me to keep stock! I quickly get back on track when i stop and stare at the Davida Guzzi ad for a while though...

good to know you're not going to have to wait a year for your tank, yeah go for it with the custome job I wasn't saying don't do it more just hang onto the bits you take off as they will have more value then the bit of cash you might get flicking them off. There's not much that can't be undone / redone if you very felt the need , the r80 is looking like this at the moment put some wider bars on replaced the clocks with an acewell unit and a have a nice brat style seat and smaller lights etc to go on the rear : )

cheers, i'll chuck some pics up once bits arrive. Just got a CNC machined battery plate made plus a few bits'n'pieces. Thinking batt should fit under tail (one of the reasons going with alloy rather than leather) cos otherwise will have to mount under trans or up on plate-don't really wanna mount on plate-really want to keep that space free.

yeah that wait would've killed me! Quite like keeping/collecting old bits and like you say can always go back to stock down the track. Have to wait till it arrives but talking to fabricator who says i can bend frame rails up rather than chopping for tail unit, will also allow somewhere to fab brackets for batt (if it'll fit!).
Lovin the look of your airhead! looks like a fun build, really like the style your going with:niceone: theres a lot of inspiration online for them but don't see too many modded in NZ which is good.
