Getting closer to getting my wheels on the road! Just wondering, do most folk get full insurance or third party? I have been quoted $227 per year full insurance with $200 excess compared with approx $20 per year third party with $100 excess. I am on a learners licence but am not completely inexperienced (having commuted on a smaller motorbike about 20 years back). My ride is a 2006 Kawasaki Super Sherpa (250cc). Would appreciate any thoughts. Cheers.

fuck what everyone else does, do whats best for you.

for how cheap those prices are, Id be taking the full insurance, its what, less than $5 a week? youd pay more than that for a coffee or a beer on a long ride . . .

That's an absolute bargain for full cover. Remember when I was still young ( A Looonnnnngggggggg time ago) and had to stump up about $1800  to insure brand new GSXR750. Was under 25 and no insurance record except for old mans car.
The next year I was out of the under 25 bracket and the crooks dropped the amount insured by 15% but premium by only 10%, effectively an increase in price. Told them to shove it :oi-grr: and two weeks later a truck backed over the bike at work :eek5: Lucky my employer paid up for damages (despite the urban myth that employess property not covered at workplaces).
Whose the insurer by the way, they might be getting some more business :)

That sounds pretty good value to me. I would go with the full insurance.
Which insurance company is that with if I may ask? I pay quite a bit more with much higher excess...

\Yup, same here. Theory is that if I write the KLR off I got a hell of a lot more to worry about than a munted bike

Thanks for your thoughts. Much appreciated. Money is about to become tight, so considering the expenses carefully. Despite an unexpected change in our financial circumstances, hubby won't think of putting my dreams of getting the bike on the road on hold. Feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

The insurance quote came from AMI (our insurer for other stuff). Their insurance does not cover off road. The third party policy does not cover fire and theft.

Happy riding everyone.

That's interesting and they must have changed over the years. Last time I asked them to quote on a motorcycle, they told me they couldn't compete even before giving me the quote. They were right too.

Cannot recall if response from AMI few years back was we do not do motorcycle insurance or it was
way over the top in price.

Went with Kiwibike Insurance, they could do sole third party insurance for me for $186 per year.

Do you $30 a year third party insurers have special contacts at these companies - $30 goes
into say a rear bumper on a beamer a fair few times ?

Its $168 a year third party on my old 92 terrano with AMI

When i moved down from Auckland I paid less for full cover in Nelson than my 3rd party was worth in Auckland.

I have paid 6-7 grand for insurance on tools & stock over the last 8 years. Haven't claimed once. I subsequently have dropped it.

My 3rd party is with AMI, cost is $26 annually. No inside contacts. House, contents and wifeys car with them as well, but didn't make any difference to bikes cost when I asked.

Yep i'm with AMI & costs $29.00 a year. My bike is a lot shinier & cooler than Woodmans tho.

Cheers OP, Padmei and Woodman - will contact AMI

I use to think insurance was a waste of money - but after a house fire and
earthquakes - you never know, try to strike right balance of not being
over-insured or under-insured ...

(sigh)

Please don't buy insurance by price.
Ask around about claims service.
Go to one of the many specialist motorcycle insurers.

If you ask nicely I'll tell you what it was like to have my near new BMW assessed by a ex-panelbeater who new fuck all about bikes but was a staff assessor for one of the IAG Group (NZI, State, AMI).

Nothing unusual there, though they're generally amenable.....generally.

I'd definitely talk to the guys and girls at kiwibike.co.nz.

Always reasonable for both road and race bikes. Always happy to have a chat about what you need. and ALWAYS go out of their way to help you with a claim.

Also recommend Kiwibike,

Sorted me out with insurance for what I was up to. Excellent service after my bike got stolen as the claim was initially declined but they got it reassessed and approved. Kept me well informed but did all the work.

Bu why would they dissmiss a claim if a bike was stolen or in an accident causing damage as long as you are licensed & have WOF etc?
If I had an expensive sought after bike I might feel different but all I want to do is have my arse covered if i hit a porsche (like my mate did when I was a teenager)

Maybe with kiwibike being a middleman they went into bat for their client after the actual insurer said no first time round

Rolling in the $30 club now :2thumbsup - $27.90 to be precise - cheers

Thats what happened just to be clear. Actual underwriter declined the claim as I didn't get the guys drivers licence, short version is that it was up for sale and a guy came to look at it, asked if it started ok and then took off on it. They (underwriters) declined the claim as per exclusions in the policy schedule but kiwibike argued that it was an unreasonable request and not in the spirt of the policy and got the decision overturned.

Some cheeky buggers about ..... is taking someones license before they do a test drive of your vehicle expected protocol with all insurance companies ?

"Nice action Kiwibike Insurance" :niceone:

Comes under "due care and attention".
Kiwibike were very generous, I can't see many insurers doing that.

Had car yards ask for it or they take a copy, good idea with all the potential
flaws in the old skool kiwi way of - "Here are my keys - that's my car over there" :D

Getting someones licence details befor a test ride is a requirement in most policies if test rides aren't just excluded altogther. As for my case the 'buyer' and I never got that far and he rode off whilst I was standing there talking to him. First thing that came into my head was that he can't be stealing it as hes not even wearing a helmet which in hindsight is logic that only applies to someone that obeys the law. Kiwibike are a broker not an insurance company and therefore dont have a conflict of interest.
