With you on this one BD. Modern music seems directionless and twee. We have awesome back catalogues of music, which is great, but we need a new punk or grunge movement to re-energize things. And by that, I dont mean a rehash of the old punk or grunge genres.

Missing the point.
Not a re-hash. A new wave. Rebellion. A musical phoenix rising from the ashes of Will I Am.

And yet in 20 or 30 years a group of old farts sitting around a forum will be saying exactly the same thing...
The age of the 'album' is over so things change. I guess music is as much a single 'performance' art form now with the visual aspect being as important as the musical...
Anyway - new music still happens - we just stopped looking for it.

Nah. I trawl.
Jools Holland is still a good source if you don't already go there.
There are several modern bands I do dig, but their main appeal is the way they 'cross' two earlier bands.
And I'm not buying the Grumpy old man bit either. I don't like Beiber as much as I didn't like The Bay City Rollers.

Selective memory, cast your mind back to 1977 when Radio Hauraki played the top 40 all day..... you had to tune in to Barry jenkins to hear the Sex Pistols.
Technology these days might be good, but the raw brain material is sadly lacking.

I'd argue that the new revolution is already here - but it's the media rather than the music. Youtube has a lot to answer for IMO.
The new Sex Pistols may actually be out there but how the hell do you find them in the sheer volume of crap on the net...
The old system of "labels" had a few things going for it - at least if an A&R man was impressed enough to sign someone on, they followed through and ensured the musical standard of what went on sale was acceptable.

Hmmm. Different memory. In Aus we had Radio JJ and 'Rage' all-night music vids. They made alternate music very accessible.
What I should have said in the opening gambit is 'popular' music.

Jeez .. is that old fart still alive ??? I was reading him in NME last century !!!
In many ways I think you're right .. I haven't listened to much music out of the western world since 1981 - when I first heard World Beat ... it's still the predominant music form I buy today (If you can count such a diversity as a form)
Rock and Roll is the music of teenage rebellion - I haven't been a rebellious teenager for many many years (I might be rebellious, just not a teenager) I do not expect to relate to the rebellious teenage music of today ...

Good rebellious music is no longer main-streamed, you have to go looking for it.
No one on TV or ANY radio station is going to show you where it is, anymore, or who they are to be found. The odd late show on BFM and GeorgeFM but really the station managers are sucking satans cock, and good DJ's have to be careful
and the masses are supplied chipmunk pop and producer hacks/company men arranged hip hop and electronica
I would argue that there is possibly much more good music now.... the spirit of rebellion may be hampered by a lack of vitality, brought about by environmental stresses and toxins....vaccination injury of rebel breeding stock et al.... [believe it] the spitting tacks angst is even stronger now in some who perceive the corruption....
The spiritual aftershocks of the 70's has also produced a softer more loving rebellion, inline with estrogenisation of young males. Women are still as prominent too, especially as vocalists.
The political ramifications of music has been usurped by money men, nose ringed by the beast of corporation. MTV heralded a corrupting of the spirit, as did Beavis and Butthead and Southpark... the opium of the lesser masses
As violence and testosterone have done a endocrine disorder nose dive, so has much rock and roll
I feel in two minds posting this... as internet ferrets from corporate political entities may use these comments to their own monetary advantage.
Even Rollins is a sell out for a cameo spot on TV or a young boy to fondle...
The mighty dollar will eat its own tail and die
such is Rome

I am yet to have a year where I don't find some good tunes.
I have learnt to look outside english mainstream also. Lots of great spanish bands out there now - who sing in english.
Basically when I look at my music collection and find that I am reminiscing about the "good ol days" - I buck my act up and go looking for new good music. As mentioned earlier I usually find something every year.
I also like how music has come backs. I think that is how it should be.
Rather than the DRONE and HUMM of playing the same shit every day. I swear many years ago I used to like AC/DC........now it is like smelling and old fart. The fart was funny when it was new.
As for "another sex pistols" I am sure there a 1000's of bands out there - that you haven't found yet. In fact some bands which I forgot about have come back and are 10 times better than I remember (Sevendust is a good example).
So sometimes you just have to risk a little of your time and go searching for the good stuff.

Yes. But its always been that way. Looking through the lens of the (wait for it) nearly 40 years since the Pistols broke the music scene wide open I think you have to remember that there was a LOT of dross back then as well.
Lots of your Cliff Richards and your Bee Gees and whatever. Its pre-rap and its when R & B was actually OK but white people didnt listen to it much. And big corporations controlled music because they controlled the physical means of how you listened to it: they equated the tool with the content.
Now it isn't hegemonic or monlithic to that extent: any one with some talent, a PC and a bedroom can record a decent sounding album (or track), upload it online and badaboom badabing: you have a new "star". Thats how your favourite and mine, Justin Bieber was discovered. Or, closer to home that Lorde chick.
So, the cost of maknufacture and distribution have dropped to virtually zero, the large corporations are not so large anymore and they struggle with how to actually make money with their business model. So they get Lars Ulrich to be the bad cop... yeah, that worked well.
In answer to your question, I think "No, we will never see another band like the Pistols" because society is different, the industry is different, and people dont listen to music in that same way anymore. I get the sense that because there is no sacrifice involved with people getting music anymore, its just another commodity: there is not the people trawling record shops (hell, there are no record shops), there is no "shall I buy these two albums and eat noodles for a week, or what?" back in the days a record album cost $10.99 I had $30/week discretionary spending.
come to think of it I still spend a third of my income on records... (not really)
The other thing about the Pistols: it wasn't just the music biz: they were perceived by society in general as being "bad" and "trying to overthrow the natural order" and a general (and generally bad) social force. Remember in the UK the Home Secretary being involved, bans on their tours, and in spite of God Save the Queen being the biggest single in the country the "Top Ten" lists being published with a blank in first place?
Either they were serious or it was wanker McLaren's idea of marketing, but the point is they were TAKEN seriously.
and that shit would not happen now because condescending cunts like John Key will do anything except confront a genuine social issue. "Talk about the snapper quota thats what your public wants to hear" cunt.
So, no.
I still listen to Never Mind The Bollocks, probably once a week. It is still fresh, and angry, relevant.
Just as an aside, the only place I can think of where a band may have a chance of upsetting the social order is Pussy Riot, in the former USSR* OK, Russsia: but they havent had the same impact because of total control of the news outlets... so people dont hear about it at all, or hear only the Orthodox** version as approved by hitman Putin and his cronies in the church. They have way more impact outside Russia than init.

Will Hermes "Love Goes to Buildings on Fire" (yes, named after the Talking Heads song)
basically his thesis is that creativity follows cheap real estate. He talks about New York City in the early 1970's and the various musical subcultures flourishing there at the time because it was cheap to live there: alternative rock (CBGB's crowd: basically all my favourite bands are from that era: Talking Heads, Blondie, The Ramones, Patti Smith, and Velvet Undergruond. Lou reed etc) plus salsa, jazz and the loft jazz scene, and of course the birth of Hip Hop. The early stuff of which is amazingly good. its not always been about hating women and conspicuous consumption.

Here is an alternative list to Dave's one:
1950's: Rock and Roll is stolen by white people from black people and becomes a massive hit. A lot of this music is awful but some of it is marvellous. pop music sucks
1960's: the British invasion. The beatles. The UK makes an export industry out of selling back repackaged black people music to white america. Some of this music is amazing. some is amazingly bad. Hippies suck. Late 60's East Coast (US) underground gives us The Velvet Underground and the template for alternative rock. pop music sucks
1970's: fucking hippies die. East Coast underground scene(s) early 70s' are vibrant and brilliant. punk rules. pop music sucks
1980's. Oooooh, synthesizers. What the fuck do we do now that "punk" (whatever that was) is dead? Lets all use the same KORG synth and those octagonal fake drums and have long floppy fringes. Some good pop songs. Later on, MTV happens and all of a sudden how you look is even more important. Fucking hair metal sucks. pop music still sucks.
1990's. Rock is dead or so its said and now its all a part of historyyyyyyyyy * Seattle, Industrial, goth, and lets turn this shit up to 11. Lets not have a band and bring back the disco (with craploads of MDMA) and call it house music. Lets ironically use 1960's happy face symbols!! pop music suck diddly ucks.
2000's. a lot of people who wanted to be in a punk band decided they couldnt and didnt or wouldnt and start country bands instead. The peak of the alt.country scene. A lot of good metal around. Pop music sucks even harder.
2010's: ???? pop music sucks

Being a young'un teen during the 70s I have claimed for the past 3 decades they were the best years for music and I struggled to find anything I liked through the late 80s (early 80s rocked for me, XTC/Altered Images/Jam/The Members/Madness...) or the 90s or the 00s all seemed, well simply horrible.
But just this year I have finally cast off my rose tinted 70s glasses and started to enjoy the lasted iTunes hits. Like an epiphany I now look on my 70s collection with disdain. There's still nothing ever been created worse than rappers though.
I don't know how far or long Lorde's instant stellar career will go, but I find her quite fascinating. How a 16 y.o. can pop out of nowhere to have 3 hits in the NZ charts at once is outstanding. Go girl. Imagine Dragons current hits wouldn't sound out of place in 75 next to my collection of Led Zep, Deep Purple and Alice Cooper albums. Another fav. for me at the moment is the 2013 Tomorrowland warm up mix. Yeah it's all DJs playing with electronics mishmash, but the end result I enjoy and that's what counts.
I frowned upon my daughters growing up to Britney/Beyoncé/Rihanna and other pop gum favourites. The Wiggles I could just handle though, so I'm hoping this current trend of hits on FM radio continues for my sake. Otherwise I forced back to listening to The Sound 70s reruns.

Gotto put my 2c worth in here. I work all day with teenagers and the really amusing thing about it is if you ask any of the students over 16 what they are listening to it has probably come straight out of Mum and Dad's collection. About 5 years ago I mentioned Stiff Little Fingers to one of the Girls and the next day there was a copy of Nobodys Heroes on my desk. This got me interested in what they were listening to and it suprised me how many of the have the likes of Bon Jovi and Fleetwood Mac on their i-pods.
The modern shit (and yes in my opinion most of it is shit) is really only listened too by the really young students (third form or year nine if your a newer model).
But then again I'm old enough to remember Saturday Night Fever and the whole disco shit thing (vomit, vomit) and appreciate that main stream music has always had a large element of shit in it. Most of the popular shit is more about marketing than talent.

In one of William Gibson's books (Idoru, IIRC) he refers to it as the "ever present, neverchanging, digital now" or something like that. the idea is that anything is available to anyone at anytime. And think about it, odds are if it has lasted for a while, its because it has something going for it. good stuff rising to the top etc.
They should have given you a GOOD SLF album: Hanx or Inflammable Material. But still. they are still touring by the way. saw them at the now demolished Civic in Manchester Street just before the earthquakes.

SLF - always loved their cover of Doesn't Make It All Right and Bloody Dub of Nododys Heroes - I guess I was more into the Ska sound.
The Disco bit is interesting too because to me the 70s is more about the likes of Cockney Rebel and Jethro Tull than Donna Summer and the Bee Gees, still each to his own.

I'm just a yungin' but I reckon music this day and age is better... not music made today but 4 decades of decent music is at anyones fingertips. Just because no new music is any good doesn't mean there isn't good music.
As for modern music, use a website called pandora. Play cold chisel and it will shuffle automatically to other musicians of similar musical style. So usually end up with dire staits, live, genesis etc being played. Then out of the blue a modern rock band will slot in which you've never heard of before. And their song will be good. Then you can youtube them and fond all their songs, and download your favorites. It's hard work finding music that you enjoy. But I think it's easier to find than 30 years ago (being 22 years old I should know ;)).

Valid. And also today it's possible to filter the advertising, annoying 'novelty voice' DJ's and voice-overs out of the stream completely.

Totally agree BD.
These days music is being recorded on iPads in bedrooms and basements by cracking bands but the corporates that distribute this music do not allow it into the main stream. With shit like The Voice and X Factor out there, modewrn music is being moulded through the channels of, well, utter crap...
Yes, as it was in 1976 before the Pistols came out and destroyed that mainstream. I was in London then, it was a fucking great time to be involved in music. Trouble is, you cant get 'banned' that easy these days so the revolution is over before it really begins.
My take, for what it is worth, is boycot the mainstream and support your local garage band. Somewhere out the the Nirvana Pistols of Leon are waiting to do a George Michael and fuck Sony up the arse....guess it would be nice...

Somebody mentioned Wiskeytown. There's Wilco, Calexico, Iron and Wine, The National..... Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips.....
allmusic.com is an online encyclopedia. Pitchforkmedia was my favourite site but it's vanished at the moment.
This is a list from a mate of mine in the States of his favourites from the first half of 2013
Half Gone 2013
1. CocoRosie - Tears for Animals
2. Vampire Weekend - Step
3. Laura Marling - Master Hunter
4. Kurt Vile - Girl Called Alex
5. Low - Just Make It Stop
6. Hookworms - Since We Have Changed
7. Youth Lagoon - Dropla
8. The National - Humiliation
9. Hiss Golden Messenger - Sufferer (Love My Conqueror)
10. Patty Griffin - Ohio
11. Ed Harcourt - Murmur In My Heart
12. CocoRosie - Poison
Coco Rosie's got the "guy" from Anthony and the Johnsons on it so not my cup of tea but there's lots of stuff I like on there. YMMV.

I listen to NuFm a lot these days fro two reasons, one my radio only gets two stations and two, the other station is Hauraki. They have the same set list every day,
To be fair most stations do I guess. Anyhow, I was listening to Souljah singing Aotearoha the other day and was surprised to find that at the end of what is a hip hop/soul number, they appear to have got Joe Satriani to bust out some wicked chops. Was a change from listening to the endless hiphop songs about going to the clurb or picking up bitches in the clurb etc

Stop listening to media then, radio is crap, the news is crap, "important events" are crap, almost anything to do with mainstream "you must listen to/take interest in or enjoy this because we say" is crap. Almost all popular music you hear has a hook, something catchy and has zero substance or originality/talent. But it's probably cause you're listening to the wrong platform. If people put half as much effort into seeking decent music as you had to in the 70's you'd find it even easier than you did then but most seem quite satisfied shoveling the crap pop music media loves though their ears.

Some rap is awesome! Same as anything though, I like several pop songs at any given time too. Throw Steve Earl and a few others in there and I can even be accused of liking country music.
Metal, thank god, marginalized itself ...Hard rock/metal is my go to genre though. Like anything, the right song will turn most people onto it.
'Godmack' is a hard rock band that really gets my heart pumping at the moment. Their music reminds me of my favourite bands of old's stuff. They do some fucking WICKED covers to boot!

Thanks for posting that. That cover of Rocky Mountain Way is the best cover of that song I have ever heard. Its even better than Ozzy's version.
Definitely going to check that band out.... to be honest I had completely dismissed them on the basis of their name alone. I thought they were one of those appalling "xhristian" metal bands. They also seemed to be having a pretty good time. It always amuses me to see actual git-box players playing air guitar.....
Thanks again. :)

Kind of the same, hence me scratching my head trying to remember if I'd seen them. I really ought to hold my hand up and admit to be a terrible snob about the derivativeness (is that a word? It is now) of a lot of bands in the "post-Grunge" era.

Yeah - I still listen to SOME hard rock/metal ... but I've been listening to that type of music since I bought my first every album - Led Zeppelin III - in 1971 ... My record collection (Big round black vinyl thingies) includes Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Iggy and the Stoogies, MC5 ... etc etc ... so I'm fairly over it now - 42 years of it ... (longer than some here have been alive) ... I still play a lot of Hendrix ... but not a lot of other metal/hard rock any more ...
I guess I Just got old and my tastes changed ... and I'm not longer the rebellious teenager I once was ..

HDC nailed it. It's the Autotune thing. I hate that shit and it has become ubiquitous.

Creating the illusion of talent. An "artist" who can't sing can now have their moment in the spotlight.
I bet Milli Vanilli would have loved autotune.

I think you might enjoy this film:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2396566/?ref_=sr_1
It looks at backup singers from the 60's on. It is not dry, or boring, and OMG the singing. The singing is sublime. Great interviews (Jagger, Mr Gordon Sumner, among others) plus archival footage (Bowie, among others).
I have spent the last few days buying and listening to soul/RnB from the 60's and 70's.
One of the interviews is with a producer who says something like "In every record production budget these days there is a line item for "tuning". why the fuck do they need that? Why can't they just do it in tune the first time, because back in the day we had to."
Hate on Phil Spector as much as you want (and you should, he is an AWFUL human being) some of that 60's stuff is incredible. Plus the musicians could play a bit.
10/10 the movie and one for the DVD collection.

Someone was busted last year for doing the Milli Vanilli thing in a stage show. A big pop name too.... cant remember which. The interesting thing was it had zero negative consequence career or publicity wise.

How about this one from 1971? .. they don't come any worse - The band is called Middle of the Road (I ask you ...) and just the title of this song .. well ...
The first song to be played on the country's 2nd ever private radio station, and was on high rotate - oh the rebellion!

Spot the backing singer is a good game.
Here's one I spotted lately.
If this doesn't skip the first minute - do so - then check the future mrs Spingsteen in Southside Johnny's Jukes.

There is still some Gilbert on my studio playlist too. 'In a little while from now' He's so mudguts it makes it a pleasure to be at work.

Beyonce at Ohbummer's inauguration. Can't really blame her, if ever there was a completely unsingable song, it's the 'merkin National Anthem.

I should maybe do likewise, I'm filling in the gaps of stuff that people tried to introduce me to years ago, when I was a bit too Very Metal to take much notice.
This week, I am mostly listening to Janice Joplin.
Anyway, have we all seen this? A great comment on what's wrong today:

So sad. Poor guy, he wasn't that bad...
His glasses were kind of cool too, but a bit too old school. He should get some wayfarers.

I WILL WAIT I WILL WAIT FOOOORR EEWWWWWWEEEE
Fucking alcoholics singing claptrap drinking songs.
Found recently they bastardised this also
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/V_kshqySOS4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
scumbags.
I think they should go sober and stop singing. It's terrible, and quite frankly annoying.
I also heard that the only good Dragon songs were studio albums as they were basically off their rockers on stage - frequently booed off.
I fucking hate bands that don't bother to put their effort towards their fans. If I wan't to watch people get wasted and try and sing - I would watch America's got ghetto talent.
