This is nuts....
Ever since I had that bloody influenza B thing a few months back I have caught another cold every couple of weeks. As well as that I had a urine infection (where did THAT come from ?), a rash, a whopping great ulcer in my mouth... What the hell is going on here? These are all stupid things I don't normally get...
I'm assuming my immune system (already a bit poor due to being type 1 diabetic) has taken a massive dive... (well duh!) BUT what do I do to recover it?
I've had a full set of bloods done (and the other) and everything is aOK so I'm not 'officially sick'
I'm going to work a few short weeks and squander a bit of leave and try to get back into a bit of gentle exercise but any other suggestions would be gratefully received... especially any vitamins / supplements (Vicki sets great store in these)

Fish oil capsules old boy - and glucosamine tablet to keep the bendy bits bendy.
Lotsa fresh fruit'n'veges.
If that fails console yourself with the thought that instead of just being ill you could have been driving down the motorway when a retarded 14 year old drops a lump of concrete through your windscreen.....

5 weeks, two flus. Hong Kong 'flu, quickly followed by Haemophilus Influenza.
Trying to manage on 3 hours of sleep a night isn't helping either.
But I DO love whinging so. :)
The one thing that is helping the most is drinking a couple of litres of water a day, and taking an Executive stress formula multi-vitamin twice a day.
EAting apples and mandarins like they're going out of fashion too.

Vitamin supplements are only useful if you are deficient - you get all your daily requirements from fresh fruit and vegetables. Eat lots of these to help boost your immune system. Garlic capsules are helpful in building your immune system to fight off colds etc. Being unwell will create havoc with your BSLs so keep a careful eye on them. Keep the exercise gentle until you feel you are back to full strength. Healthy diet is probably the most important thing to help you recover. Chicken soup has a lot of therapeutic qualities (scientific fact) so have lots of that.

Going right through our family,my boys cough day and night, they've sorta had a continuous cold for a couple of months,my wife has no energy and can't get enough sleep. One of my daughters collapsed in the shower a couple of months ago,out cold, she spent the night in hospital and was diagnosed with Influenza B.She hadn't been eating or drinking much because she felt so sick and was dehydrated.
Antibiotics kill everything, you gotta put your natural bugs back into the system, the ones that do the good things.Fresh fruit and veg as the others say, lots of liquids - juice your fruit and veg too, fresh juice is powerful stuff.

Can't drink fruit juice (too much sugar) and need to watch how much fresh fruit I eat as well... (same reason)
Yoghurt is a good idea...
Weight has crept up from stuff all exercise. Not happy.
BSL' argh! Nothing like having a little machine that quantifies just how sick you are.. bastard thing...
Eating lots of salad / chicken / rice so OK there and knocked the booze off as well... Far out - I'll be signing up at the gym next (yeah right)

Talisker. About 150mL with about 5mL of pure spring water added, preferably into a brandy balloon glass. Microwave on high for 5 seconds. Inhale aromas. Savour. Imbibe contents of glass. Repeat, as necessary, until symptoms abate...

Fighting off a bit of a cold at the moment. My boy goes to daycare, so he regularly brings back the very latest in bugs to share with the family. Plus he wakes us in the night on a regular basis. (So the lack of sleep thing kicks in)
Generally we have had a pretty good run this year. Last yr was a shocker.
We drink alot of water.
At the present moment (though not for the last few days with the cold) I do a shit load of exercise.
I pop pills like they going out of fashion. (Dont panic they are all have been animal tested)
Glucosamine
Magnesium.
Multi
Vit B
I think that is about it.
I would recommend eat plenty of good food, drink lots of water. Try to get more sleep. Move into some gentle exercise.
Oh and mental note.
DONT fly with a cold, as I just did. I thought my head was going to explode.

and take your bugs with you....
and when there, leave the little critters behind.
Take plenty of vitamins.. Oranges and pineapple juice.

Wish I had some platitudes or "get well quick" ideas to offer, Paul, but I don't.
So, I just hope you recover soon, and recover well.
It's interesting quizzing #1 son about medication (he's a 4th year pharmacy student) - he has some very eye-opening things to say about various treatments. F'rinstance - cough and cold medications are no more effective than your traditional hot lemon, aspirin, honey and brandy concoctions. He's quite ill at the moment (probably a similar ailment to yours, Paul), and I said, "Pharmacist! Treat thyself!", but he just laid on the couch and groaned at me.
:violin:
He wasn't even particularly helpful when I asked him for some creative ways to use my latest prescription as a permanent solution to my fookdness. What's the use of all our/his/the taxpayers' dollars spent on educating him, if he can't even find a cure for aaAAAARRrrrrRRthritis and insanity? :spudwhat:

Pop into the TCM Clinic (Traditional Chinese Medicine) on Rimu Rd (opp Jack Motors). I have had accupunture treatment there for Archillies tendon (from touch rugby) and elbow (squash). But while sitting in the waiting room read lots of articles and reccomendations for TCM for all sorts of conditions, including the ones you describe. Have a chat to Rodney or John Xu - tell em I sent ya.
I had really good results from my treatment from them.

I keep spending too much time on aeroplanes complete with their bug circulating air conditioning. Back in June I got a bad one had me off work for 4 days, then the cough lingered. Thought I got rid of it, went to Aussie again last week, got back Sunday and by Monday felt a bit seedy again. Hoping its nothing serious. Still at work so not that bad (yet).
I never ever trusted getting the jabs so don't bother with them and when I got crook in June it was the first time I had to take time off work for 4 years so I thought that was OK.
Hot food is what I like when I'm crook - good kiwi pies and the like - bad for the figure but make you feel better.
Oh well the next diet can start next Monday eh!

Check the diabetes (NIDDM?), diet, exercise, you know all that stuff that makes the D word a pain in the arse.
I work in a hospital. The first year that I had the jab, same thing. Every bug that was going around, I got from working about physically sick patients. However stick with it as this is my third year of working in the ward + third time getting the jab. Have not really been sick since (touch wood). Oh, dietry suppliments? If people ate a proper balanced diet, there would be no need for any of them. I started going back to the gym a few months back and after getting over the physical barrier, I feel great! Hope this helps and you feel great. I found that extra kgs = less ability to keep healthy.

Rueteri (http://www.potentherbs.com/shop/reuteri-naturesway.html) helps restore the natural bacteris and stuff in your digestive system. Very useful if you've been on antibiotics, and it's more effective than eating yoghurt where most of the good bugs are killed off by the digestive acids before they can do their job.

I use the age old method of lying on the couch and moaning. It's more effective than staying in bed because she can't hear me from up there.
It doesn't make me better, quicker. But I do get to share the misery.

I have to disagree
when I have a cold (last one i had was last year) I go for a fly...
Pop into your local gliding club on the weekend and have a go, always works for me :) - i always go with someone else when i have a cold, you can get very confused (angled horisions when straight and level etc.) while in the air with a cold

Try fasting Paul. This will get rid of all the toxins. Weekend is a good time. A 48 hour fast is not easy. You will get shocking headaches on the first day easing up on the second and euphoria on the third.
Failing that here's another
There are five basic foods. Garlic, Skim milk, Molassis, Wheat germ, and yeast. They all tast like shit but if you incorperate these into your diet you will have all the basic body requirments.

Absolutely. Use to to do 2 to three hours a day for a long time....then the kids came..........now stiff as a board. Still do my bastrikas on a regular basis. Stopped the pranayama. Just getting to spaced and into dangerous areas.

Diabetes + sick = a real pain.
First thing I do when I get sick is put away the Blood Sugar meter. It doesn't help - I already know I'm sick and I can assume my BSL's are out of whack.
Not sure why but I've never felt so good as I do at the moment, not working.
Of course this can't last ... so I guess I'll start feeling crap again soon.
What else can I say - the others have said it all. I found the Zone Diet really helpful but sounds like you eat pretty much that way anyway.
Are you getting enough sun? Its getting towards sort out the garden time again...

Not really anything to add sorry. I'm on my second bout of the flu in a month, am back to 90% but it's taking weeks for the last 10% to go.
I don't have any other health issues currently (that I'm aware of). I probably should lose some weight, but that's another story.
One of the women at my work, just turned 41, no medical history of anything, died suddenly of a massive heart attack Monday morning. Shit. We're all still in shock.
Take care Paul. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Yup - starting to feel a LOT better due to the antibiotics but early days. I actually managed a few hours sleep last night without coughing my guts out too...
This has been really interesting as it seems that this year the coughs and colds really have been a bit worse and longer lasting than the usual. I wonder if the warmer than usual weather has been a part of the reason?
One thing is for sure, I need to loose a bit of weight and get my fitness back to where I was a few years back... Maybe a KB discount at Jenny Craigs? (PT)

Whatever they gave you for the flue has killed your immune system. Get back on a healthy diet and keep it easy on the excersise if you do heaps (ie. cut down). Often takes a few months.

Pish - I'm as fat as a house and as ugly as a.... a.. really ugly thing... The worst thing is, when I had a real job and had to move heavy things I was quite strong and fit. Fit enough to play B grade basketball and a bit of A grade club stuff as well (which at 5'11" you have to be quite fit to do)
Now I sit in an office and think. My brain is no stronger for the exercise it gets and my body is also wose off and I'm just as poor...
Hmmmm....
Anyway - where is the attack Dave.... Or should I save some time and just give up now?

a Dr in Nelson swears that if you bring someone suffering with whooping cough to 10,000 feet for 20mins they will be cured.
There was an article in the newspaper about it a while ago and for weeks there was letters saying that their brother went up and was cured (other stuff like that)
It was also mentioned this treatment wasn't isolated to whooping cough...
Try your local gliding club :)

Nothing worse than a reformed (insert vice here) going on about their 'former' vice, but i will anyway.
3 games of basketball a week then the ankle blew out, lots to zero exercise, moved to New Zealand and was 160kgs overnight. Good paddocks here mate.
Try the jenny craig thing. it's easy, the food is really good, convenient, and there is absolutely no hype. just support.
It requires commitment - you have to want to loose weight- it needs some willpower and about $120 a week for the food. But if you back it up with some light exercise it works a treat. (pun intended).
It is honestly one of the best things i have EVER done.
