I've only ever used old skool maps but since getting a smart phone I quite like the map function.
Are the ones on TM any good or just save up for a know brand.

For this sort of money almost worth taking a punt.

I ride a 1976 BMW so I have lots of time to read the screen before the turn...

I've used the Peaklife GPS for about 1.5years now, really happy with it, well made and worked fine in the wet.
Only problem was it didn't come with any software or maps, so had to find my own but the one on TM seems to include NZ Maps...

there are more reviews from ADV

Recommend you stay with a Garmin GPS, as you can use the NZ Open GPS Maps.

Maps and their accuracy (ie, constant updating) will be the biggest issue as you use it over the years.

I tend to avoid electronic wizardry like online Polls.. but of late my mind has changed a bit where a GPS is concerned.

I sell the GPS units that are used by New Zealand rental companies

We pre load them with Garmin maps for our clients and they report great feedback from the customers that hire their bikes

We currently have them running on BMW Harley and Japanese machines

I use a GPS all day every day for work, have used a few over the years. Prefer TomTom myself BUT don't fall for their "Free lifetime maps" - it's the 'lifetime' of the device not YOUR lifetime and they deem the lifetime of their device to be whatever they want... be it one, two, three years... who knows. Fine print on their website...

Bonus I like with TomTom's is their live traffic - tells you where the traffic is and can re-route you to avoid traffic/accidents etc. Most of it I found is pretty accurate and helps me avoid the worst of the traffic.

Most GPS let you avoid gravel roads, toll roads etc. Navmans let you upload your route/trip data to your pc which can be quite interesting.

I have the TomTom apps on my Iphone. I have used them regularly in New Zealand, USA, Canada and Australia and have found them to be excellent. Good instructions and plenty of warning for upcoming turns (especially useful if you have been dumb enough to get yourself out in the fast lane on an L.A. freeeway in rushhour.....). I haven't tried it out on the bike yet but my engineer and his wife have used theirs both here and the USA (inside a waterproof mounting off ebay) and swear by them.

I have one of these gps that I bought direct from China

http://www.chinavasion.com/china/wholesale/GPS-Sat_Nav_Devices/Portable_GPS/Motorcycle_GPS_Navigator-3.5_Inch_GPS_Navigator#rev

Took a bit of a punt to be honest but cost $190. delivered . Turned up in less than a week.

Came with no software but plenty avalable on the net , I have loaded IGO Primo and 2012 NZ maps, not as up to date as open source I know but good enough for what I need.

Came with 2gb mini SD card that I have used for my music files.

Bluetooth works through my sena headset perfectly.

This is not a Zumo I know but for the price I recon they are great value for money :2thumbsup

I have the TomTom app on my iPhone too, but only use it occasionally. When I used it for two weeks straight, 8 hours a day it ruined my battery. That was plugged in all the time too - discharging fast and charging fast at the same time = very very hot phone and ruined battery.

I use a GPS all the time. I have a large sceen Garmin for the road and an old TomTom one for adventure biking. I use the sucky cup to stick the TomTom to the speedo lens, and it has never come off. Once you have used a GPS for planning and navagating you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner

Bought one (Garmin) for the car yesterday from JB Hi Fi at Westgate. Awesome shop and brilliant service from the knowledgeable employee about the device. They don't stock any for a bike so I have to buy one online?

I just use a plain old car jobby. Not water proof or anything but heaps cheaper. If you are a serious all weather rider you can buy a waterproof phone/GPS holder.

I use a work supplied Galaxy Tab2 10.1 on a windscreen mount. Sure makes it easy to read at speed. Does a surprisingly good job using google maps if I have to be honest. Also handy when you hit D'Auckland, flick it on to watch movies whilst sitting on the SH1 carpark. Maybe not too good on a bike though I have yet to try it.

After a bit of GPS research on the net, it would appear the cheap ones on Trade Me that don't actually mention maps are only selling you the unit.
I'm only guessing here that they do not have legitimate software.
So you pay your money and take your chances.

+1 to that.
