View Full Version : Your worst boss?

Please share your worst or interesting employer/boss stories.

I’m pretty lucky currently and have a decent boss. But I’ve had some shockers. I used to work in recruitment in London and that attracted (and promoted) some real assholes. I started at a new desk and every time a new job/client got called in, my boss would keep it (she was supposed to help get me started). Anyway, kept a tally and of the 25 jobs that got called in over a 3 month period she kept 23 of them. Throw in daily micromanagement, impossible KPIs and condescension and it got pretty unpleasant. I eventually built up a bigger desk than my boss and got my revenge by simply out-performing her. To top it all off she was one of the best looking women I’ve ever met (just like a young Jane Seymour). It’s really hard to hate someone you really want to bone.

Interestingly, of the 4 recruitment agencies I worked for over there 3 folded after the crunch.

A farmer by the name of Bill Wynn out the back of Port Waikato when I was about 15, same meal every night for the 3 months I managed to put up with him for. He had a Honda CT110 but made me walk to get the sheep or cattle in, because he was saving the petrol. Only got paid twice the whole time I was there. Guy was fuckin mental, I put his old D4 dozer over a bluff in the end, cos he said he was going to hit me with a fence batten. Stupid old prick.:angry2:

That was the most uncomfortable conversation, evar!!!1

The ones who are dumb enough to listen to the corrosive employees.
Never had an evil boss. Just dumb ones. Quite a few seemed to be hollow management who had the strings pulled by others (often other employees - not higher management)

Corrosive employees are the worst. Depressed mother fuckers who always will drag the motivation down.

When I was about 16 I worked for a dairy farmer who was pissed by lunch time most days.

I didn't care about that much but he did stupid shit like chucking milk weights at the cows in the shed when he was in a bad mood.

One day he chucked one at a cow that had pissed him off an the fucking thing missed but almost hit me.

I got a bit lippy about it and he threatened to belt me one, that produced an instant invite to get on with it but he lost interest so I told him to milk his own fuckin' cows and I went for an early tea.

Next day the cunt sacked me once he had his Mrs with him for protection.

Worked for one bloke seemed sane at first but if you upset him he wouldn't talk to you for weeks, that made for some quiet days and before long I was starting to day dream about running him over with the tractor or cruiser just to see if he'd say something.
In the end I just buggered off before I fucked up an got the silent treatment again.

Not a bad bloke,just a bit different.

At a car dealership I worked at once the manager was younger than me by a few years and resented that I was liked by the owners and fast tracked through and given bonuses. Then when he was asked to step down from the TV advertising role and told that I was taking it over he didn't talk to me for two weeks. Then he got caught siphoning money out of the business and tried to pin it on me, leaving a paper trail he thought would lead to me. It didn't of course, and he resigned before he was fired. It was back in the day of needing a licence to be a salesperson so we objected to his application until he paid the money back. He then went onto bigger and better things, eventually fleeing the country under suspicion of siphoning nearly $250,000 from another dealer here.

I hope the cunt chokes on his own shit.

The worst boss I ever worked for was a real slave driver. He made me start work each day before everyone else, finish after everyone else. He paid me less than minimum wage, if he paid me at all. After a while I had had enough and stopped working for myself.

When I started my career as a chef all my bosses were vicious, psychotic, maniacs. After a few years & many tears I learned to distinguish those who nearly killed you in the pursuit of perfection from those who were inadequate for the task & took it out on the employees. Shifts were 6 days a week, 7am until midnight or so. Salaried. If you were fast enough to get your mise done, you got an hour or twos break in the afternoon.
Gordon Ramsay is a sweetheart compared to some of the evil, drug addled, alcoholic freaks I worked for in London. Ended up in A & E 3 times after having stuff thrown at me or being stabbed.

I trained as a nurse back in the day training happened on the job. I came into a surgical ward that looked after infected wounds. Horrific things infected wounds. I have seen parts of the inside of a human that should never be exposed to the air outside of an operating theatre.

Anyway, the Ward Sister, Charge Nurse of the ward was an absolute Cnut! Honestly she was rude, abusive and just horrible to work for. One day she dug at me, and picked at me, and generally made my life a complete misery. After I had done everything and then some she asked for she had another crack at me. I snapped and read her her pedigree! Fucking bitch. I was so angry. As I was delivering my angst to her she started laughing...

Fuck me! Talk about winding the anger meter even higher. I basically told her to get fucked, without using those words. When I stopped long enough to draw a breath, and with the full and certain knowledge I had blown it, and would most likely be sacked for the way I had spoken, she just said, "I have been waiting to see what it would take to get you to snap" You did well. She was laughing! It took a moment for me to realise what she said, and get it. She was a complete bitch, but appreciated someone that could "take it" and then give it back! Apparently I did not overstep, and was actually offered a full time position on the ward.

Without a doubt, the women that were promoted to a ward management role back then, were some of the hardest, meanest and vindictive cnuts you could ever meet. If you survived them, they took you on board and became really cool to work for.

This has stood me in great stead over my career, I don't take shit from anyone. It works.

I had a few bad bosses, but others I worked with had worse....
1. This woman manger was evil personified, she would go through her workers desks looking for any non work related items and write them up, also once had a employees car towed when she had to briefly park in the basement to pick up something on her way to see her sick husband in hospital. This manager got her comeuppance though, she was called into the big bosses office and told one of the 6 of her team was going to be made redundant, so in her own unique style she got out 5 glasses and a bottle of wine to celebrate with the survivors, problem for her was, it was her being made redundant! I have no idea how the big boss kept a straight face at the earlier meeting!

2. A senior manager in charge of a big IT project being done for IRD hated one of his senior analysts for no particular reason other than this guy was popular. This manager was SUPER loud and swore at his workers and treated them in a disgustingly degrading way. Anyways, another round of redundancies was announced and he took the opportunity to boot the guy he did not like out on his ear. Here is the kicker, the guy had been with the company 20+ years, and he got over 100K as a redundancy payout, then IRD rang him the next day and put him in charge of the project from their side, so now the Arsehole boss who had "gifted" him a massive payout and now a pay rise suddenly found himself answering to his previous worker and the icing on the cake? He knew all the dirty laundry the arsehole had been hiding from the IRD!

Spent most of my life working for myself but about 10 years ago i took a sabbatical and went to work for a landscaper for a year or so. Under contract of course.
The first thing he asked me was "what's your biggest issue in your industry" my reply was "rates being cut by cowboy operators'
He told me his biggest was finding decent staff.
After about 2 months i figured out why it was a problem keeping staff, he was an absolute arse to work for.
All these young guys trying to learn the trade were getting hammered by his absolute arrogance and temper.
Got mine back when i didn't return from Xmas break, went to work on diggers instead. He tried to keep my last payment for the last months work. $4200. Took him to small claims and they awarded me $4200 plus $1200 expenses.
Thanks for coming.

Pretty much all of them .. I've had about 35 bosses in my working life and almost all of them I've told they could shove their job and walked out ..

The worst ?? Take your pick ..

An anal retentative seven-day-a-week 16-hours a day workoholic who expected his staff to be the same ...

A bad tempered nasty one who swore and threw things and threatened to hit me until I stood up and walked towards him ...

A devious one who tried to catch me out doing something wrong all the time (I was wise to him and set up situations where he thought he had me - only to find that I had slipped away leaving him in the shit )

A useless one who gave me jobs to do, would never explain how he wanted them done, but I always managed to do them wrong ...

A completely useless one who never gave any instructions, hints or anything - and let the other managers run wild .. making life hell for everyone else ..

A simpler question might be bosses I have liked ... it's a very short list ...

I used to work in kitchens. Plaza in Wellington was my first. Had to do work experience which they didn't want to pay me for. Would have been three months unpaid. I told him that would make paying rent hard so he paid me minimum wage (at the time $7.30/hr). I got out of hospitality primarily because of all the unpleasant chefs I worked with. They go nuts in noisey boring environments. Open kitchens were developed so customers could see chefs working - it was to stop chefs from killing each other. One chef I worked with (into bikes btw) was convinced I was pulling faces at her everytime she looked away. Wasn't doing anything of the sort, but she wasn't to be convinced otherwise... mental lesbian.

LOL The shop is part of a chain and located in a Westfield mall, and must open on non-statutory public holidays. Few of the local staff liked working on those days, and I was happy to volunteer for the extra pay to support my family. Win-win, I'd thought...

Management for whatever reasons didn't like the idea of a select person taking all the time-and-a-half holiday pay... But anyway it wasn't a case that competes with the others presented here, so it was partly mentioned in ironic jest.

Never had any real bad bosses. Working in industries that involve using manual skills, machinery, logging etc, I've usually had a boss that has done the hard yards himself and knows what wet feet and mud is like.

Currently working in a govt dept where most promotions have nothing to do with ability. Just the right face, gender, skin colour is enough to climb the ladder.

Things that give me the shits about 'new age' bosses? Team building exercises, Trendy 'mission statements',weekly 'touchy touchy' feel good meetings. Inspirational slogans plastered over the walls,

Put me on a bulldozer, point me to a gap between two trees, and tell me to put a track through and set up a new skidway somewhere.:2thumbsup

Ive always had pretty decent bosses. First one when I was straight out of school in 1980 taught me heaps, encouraged me into good financial savings habits that have kept me in good stead ever since, was generous with sharing around the cash from cash sales(got $20 one day when I was only earning $64 a week because he had a good cash sale the night before), always got to knock off straight after lunch before a long weekend with no loss of pay and so on. Very occasionally we would have to work a little later just to make sure a job went out on time and he couldn't pay us overtime but he more than made up for it in other ways.

Other bosses generally all good. Didn't always see eye to eye with all of them but had a mutual respect for each other.

Maybe I have just been lucky.

Sadly, the worst boss would fit that description perfectly. A lazy bastard, regularly found asleep on the job...
Unfortunately management discovered that the place had a lack of Maori supervisors so gave this idiot a minor position on the workshop floor.
A very bad thing to do since there appeared to be no getting off of the promotions escalator. Still incompetent and following the Septic Tank theory (the biggest turds float to the top).

He openly stated to me that "he didn't know if I was serious or taking the piss". It was quite entertaining winding him up though...

Seeing mention of the boss sleeping reminded me of probably my worst. Prick slept for probably 3 days a week then would come out on a Monday just as things were getting under control ( very large payroll like you don't see now...) and say "we'll put a team on it...." Bastard. i never actually told him to fuck off and leave it to me but eventually we saw him less, thankfully.

He retired and died shortly after. Word i heard was that they had to top up the grave several times in the first 2 weeks cos it was rammed down hard by all the people jumping on it to ensure he wasn't coming back.....He had made himself generally unpopular in a small town.

...the fellow I started my apprenticeship with was a monster I thought...I wore his boot in my arse a lot and it seemed like it was undeserved at the time, early '70s...apart from a cruisey couple of years at a Shell Oil Depot when the arse dropped out of the building game just as I finished my apprenticeship in '76 and then a while working for a yank drilling company in the North Sea where it seemed everyone was a cunt, I have been self employed. Looking back now the arsehole I worked for first did me big favours for being such a prick...I kind of became something like him and realise now why he was the way he was...I had a young bloke start a job with me as a shovel hand when he was sixteen, he was with me for 25+ years...I've heard he's a prick to work for too...

Ah yes - glorious boss stories.

I was the only female to work for a company. My manager had a few "issues" going on at home (wife had run off with another woman, minor things like that). He would be up and down like a yo yo. In the mornings I would politely say "good morning". His reaction, when he didn't want me to speak to him, was to walk past my desk and clear the entire thing of all paperwork and other items that I was working on. This happened often, and I would have to sort out all of the accounts, quotes and hires I was working on at the time and pick them up off the floor.

At other times I had to book crew for him to start work sometimes at 2am, 3am in the morning. Now there were NO benefits for a casual crew member to work at this hour of the day, and they would only get a 3 hours call usually and paid around $18.00 / hour. So understandably it was a challenge to find skilled crew to work at this hour and in qunatity. Sometimes I would simply have to go for who was willing to say yes to the work, rather than who was more skilled or a "cooler person to work with" to fill up numbers. When I would report back to him with who his crew were for that work it was highly likely that he didn't like who I had booked. He would then grab the nearest office chair in the communal office, lift it up and throw it at me - it was always a near miss as the sneaky bugga would must move so fast.

Sigh - how I miss working in that twisted world where you loose your job on acc by a voice message, and then not get paid out any notice or holiday pay or sick leave. I wonder how the delightful gentlemen are doing these days? I wonder how much money they have lost with someone not picking up when sending out invoices on jobs that the manager had told you put not bill any labour for the larger scale jobs because it was a buddy of his - again!.

Funny enough - I bloody miss that career! Not the manager or my colleages, but the job was just awesome to say the least! That's why I put up with the constant absuse.
