Come help St. John Youth for a night. Please (20/08/2013)

So really short notice I know. But I am doing a lesson with my St. John Youth Division on motorcycle accidents tomorrow night, what to do when and if they happen.

It would be really great If I could have some help with props and maybe people with stories.

I'd really like to show them a crashed/written off bike (or one that we can lie down for them) an extra helmet (creepy I know so if someone has a crashed one?) so we can demonstrate how to correctly remove a helmet.

It's all fine and dandy just me talking about it but having never experienced anything and only my bike and gear to show it doesn't really have as much interest. We would love to have someone as a guest speaker or just to bring a handful of stuff.

if you have any ideas or can lend a hand please do let me know. Should be a good evening. I like being able to provide my kids with experiences that the other divisions don't offer.

Bottany Honda in south Auckland had a broken helmet in the helmet shelf as deco. Looked pretty messed up

We had an almost new dropped HBC helmet here for a while, I gave it to the local fire boys for training purposes.

I have a damaged helmet that you can have to use for practise. I guess I can trust a St John trainer NOT to use it on a bike even though the damage on it is minimal. I work in Albany ( Off Oteha Valley Road) if you can collect it I can bring it to work with me tomorrow. I will PM you my work number. If you like you can give me the lemoncello at the same time, I wont drink it I promise :lol:

Dammit. If it was in Chch I could have told a really good story about me finding a biker who had binned it. Involved removing a helmet and something really funny happened. Well our Red Cross instructor thought it was really funny anyway when i told him the story. Guess they'll never know what now...

The story is better if narrated and dramatically presented but I'll give you the guts of it.

Mrs Oakie and I were riding around Gebbies Pass one day when we rounded a corner and found a bike on it's side in the middle of the road. Off in the long grass to the side of the road was a biker a bit worse for wear and being tended to by a car driver. We parked safely and then I trotted back to render assistance. The guy was conscious but had been unconscious. After I gave the guy a bit of a check over and he asked me to remove his helmet. I said "better if you do it yourself" but he insisted I do it. I did it as shown in my first aid refresher and it came off like a shell off a hard boiled egg. He sat up and complained bitterly about a sore hip. He then tried to get up to his feet but it was obvious he was in real pain and was quite damaged. I told him just to lie there and wait for the ambulance. He said he couldn't afford to stay there in case the cops arrived as he was on bail. He'd just riden from the pub. Sort of explained the crash.
Shortly after, some of his mates turned up in a car and he was determined to leave with them. He manouvered over to a fence with the idea of using it to support himself to a standing position. I told him not to as he risked worsening the damage. He ignored me and started climbing using the fence post for support. Just as got almost erect there was an audible crack! and he fell to the ground in agony. "My God" I thought ... ". His leg bone just snapped.

When he retained his composure though, he advised us in no uncertain terms that the fence he'd grapped on to was in fact an electric fence and he'd received a cow sized shock which caused the 'crack' and dumped him back on the ground in agony.

And that's my tale!

Great that your doing that good on you am in palmerston north any way

tell them its the polystrine that protects your head the shell is just to keep inner in place

And forgien objects pentrating the shell very unlikey.

Oh you cant test helmet with out destrying it so if in doubt get new one .

Had an interesting night. 1 radiator hose off and a pretty fountain of fluids lol. And a bunch of very happy kids sitting on bikes and learning how and when to remove helmets. Even the little 6yo had a go.

Next term will be very interesting for anyone wanting to help with a national training scenario. I'm hoping to include a written off bike or 2, patients and spectators. We're also looking for other hazards that we could play with.

My bike likes to turn off for me when I fall..... Think it has something to do with me eventually letting go of the clutch. :p

Misjudged a left/right downhill sweeper somehow. Booze may have contributed though.
