Not just the rail network, but civilisation as we know it.

If ya don't wanna pay the money then ya doesn't ride. Pretty simple actually.

It's not like they were offering to barter anything else in exchange for the benefit of receiving transport.

Ya Bro, it coulda caused the entire universe to implode. For the love of god please pay your fares ladies and gents.

Is fare evasion illegal or just against the rules? Today's fare evaders are tomorrows fair tax evaders :D

They shouldn't have to... they inherited every single resource on this planet when they were born. However some people decided that they own those resources and feel the need to charge for it. So civilised.

Public transport being used by the public is not a crime is it?

That sentence makes no sense whatsoever.

Public transport being used by the public is not a crime is it?

Absolutely not. It's probably not even a crime if they attempt to do it without paying, likely breaks local authority rules. Suspect even the pathetic tantrum is legally merely a misdemeanour.

None of it is anything to be admired, in fact it's a succinct caricature of bad behaviour. Their mothers orta have slapped their silly, affected faces much more often.

the dollar figure represents the the effort required to build it.Teh workers needed to be paid housed and fed the steel work had to be smelted and transported.Even if the whole thing was built on a barter system its value would still be represented somehow wether its 100 000 000 dollars or 20 000 000 meals

I get it, including barter. However I refuse to see it that way anymore on the basis that both systems are an exceptionally antiquated and stupid way of running a society/economy, where the input of EVERYONE is required to maintain our society/economy at its current level. You may not understand that perspective, but value in terms of anything other than the benefit for EVERYONE is not true value, it's made up for the benefit of a few, packaged and sold to all of us as an unavoidable requirement of our society/economy. Alas, we've de-evolved so much that we accept the bullshit and forget that the economy is supposed to serve all, not just those who can afford it.

T'would be my family that suffer, not me, which would seem a little vindictive and extreme over a personal belief. "He's saying things that I don't like to hear, destroy him quickly.". I think his point was that if the rail ppl don't get their $3.50 then the employees don't get paid. You don't seem to have an issue with that, so he was testing to see if would be empathetic to their plight by asking if you would mind working for nothing. It appears that it bunches up your panties a bit.

Okly dokly. In which case I wouldn't mind working for nothing... however my family would mind me working for nothing and would be adversely affected should I choose to live that way under the current economic model. I don't wear panties for that specific reason.

But to answer the point, meh, people have been laid off where company's are making profits and still losing their jobs. Why should I give a shit?

The funniest thing I have seen for a while is an Auckland Mayoral campaign billboard. It is for john minto and the billboard slogan is "FREE & REGULAR PUBLIC TRANSPORT".

Where this moron would get the money to make it all free... taxpayer's wallets perhaps?

Also, he is standing for the Mana Party.

Where does the money to manage the rail network come from if not from the taxpayer's wallet? Where would the money, that these girls chose not to spend, have come from if not from taxpayer's wallets? If they had have been doley's, where would the money that they had used come from to pay for the ticket if not from the taxpayer's wallet?

Tis like anything else, like access to education, access to healthcare, access to infrastructure etc... it's all paid for by the taxpayer even though not all of us consistently make use of the service. Free public transport is just an extension of that?

You may note that there is always a contibution from the user. Education? You will see that the taxpayer picks up 75% of the bill and the student 25%.

If you had used the Moscow underground trains, back in the pre-glasnost Soviet era, you would have noticed a fee to pay to ride the Metro. Even the communist system was not "free for all" as moron minto suggests.

C'mon no one with 1/2 a brain thinks Communism/Socialism has any chance of working. Look at all previous attempts & you end up with some of the worst oppression of the common people.

Anyways Mashman, since I have inherited the world & its resources to do what I like with, I think I should use you for compost, I thought of it first & its only fair, I'm entitled. And my Cat who is also joint owner of the earth is looking forward to making a little scrape in said compost to leave a little brown package, so you won't have been sacrificed for nothing.

Eventually there's a contribution from the user surely... unless your kids clean the car and then use the money to pay their school fees?

Who's trying to be a communist? If it's a public service/utility/good, then everyone should pay towards it, else I see no reason why any money I earn should go to propping up the healthcare system in Auckland, or for roading, or for trains etc...

'Cept according the the train crew I play paintball with on occasion, the trains would lose ALOT less moneys if passenger trains were free; reason they charge is crowd control (bit redundant in thinking nowadays if you ask me) & as job creation

Why anyone would get so upset about a game as gay as soccer is completely beyond me.

There's an interesting theory about soccer violence ... compared to the sports which look more violent ... It goes like this ..

In competative team sports the crowd gets right into it .. shout "kill him" "hit him" "smah him' "Aw ref !!!" ... lots of noise - in some sports there is lots of action on the field .. lots of smashing and tackling ... in rugby, league, etc ... THe crowd get this real outlet for the built up aggression and violence .. lots of shouts and yells of "Yaaa" "Yahoo" .. lots of outlets.

In soccer the crowd get just as hyper - scream for blood, yell and shout .. and on the field nothing happens .. no outlet for the pent up emotions .... so they go and take it out on the other supporters out on the streets ...

Seems a reasonable explanation to me of why the on-field pussy sport promotes violence when the on-field full contact and rough sports do not ...

If the thread had have been about $100 of fuel and had involved a guy who tried to leave without paying, my response would have been very similar, but without the public bent. In fact, lump everything under the, if you have to pay for it then it's fundamentally against the human rights afforded to you at birth, umbrella.
